The Newer Greek Text of the New Testament (NA28 and UBS5) and Its Implications for Translation 新希腊语文本的新约(NA28和UBS5)及其对翻译的影响

Compared to the previous editions of the Greek New Testament, Nestle–Aland27 and UBS4, the newer editions (NA28 and UBS5) present some thirty-four changes, specifically in the Catholic Epistles. To what extent will this impact the translation of the New Testament? This paper will show that in half of those instances there will be some implication for translators and revisers of the New Testament.

The Text of Philippians 3.12 in the Gothic Translation: Paul Not Already Deemed Righteous? 腓立比书3:12的哥特译本:保罗尚未被视为义人?

The Gothic translation of Paul’s Letter to the Philippians contains a reading in which Paul claims he is not already deemed righteous (ni . . . ju garaihts gadomiþs sijau, Phil 3.12). In light of this, the Gothic version has been included as a textual witness to the so-called justification clause, a variant reading scholars have labeled “intriguing,” “very interesting,” “striking,” and “astounding.” However, no scholarly attention has been devoted specifically to the Gothic version of the justification clause of Phil 3.12. This article fills that gap. The author gives attention to this text as it appears in the surviving Gothic manuscripts and discusses two of its noteworthy features. Both features contribute to the wisdom of exercising caution before dismissing the reading as a representative of a secondary insertion into the earliest Greek text of the Pauline Letters.

Towards Professionalization of Church Interpretation in Tanzania: What Do Church Stakeholders Say about the Quality Criteria of Church Interpretation? 坦桑尼亚教会口译的职业化:教会利益相关者对教会口译的质量标准有何看法?

Church interpretation is a fast-growing service in practice, though it is still immature in professionalization. This study examines the criteria for measuring quality in church interpretation in Tanzania. These criteria are compared with those discussed by scholars elsewhere. Data were collected in ten representative churches in Dar es Salaam through interviews, focus-group discussions, and questionnaires. It was found that most criteria mentioned by participants in this study, such as fluency, mastery of grammar, faithfulness, congruence, and others, shared a great deal with the criteria discussed in the literature on interpretation. It was also established that initiatives to improve church interpretation in Tanzania are still embryonic, as there are limited actions taken by professional stakeholders to improve it. This paper calls for interpretation stakeholders to provide professional training for interpreters who intend to become professional church interpreters.

Bejalai in Iban: A Study on Translating Motion Verbs in Bup Kudus Baru 伊班语中的Bejalai:巴卜语中动作动词的翻译研究

This study investigates the use of the Talmy-Slobin typology of semantic components of motion verbs as applied to Bible translation. Using the Bup Kudus Baru, a new Iban translation, in comparison with a framework formed by the Hebrew original, NRSV representing English translation, and occasionally a Chinese translation, the author demonstrates the key features of verb-framed, satellite-framed, and equipollently-framed languages. The analysis of two Hebrew motion verbs, yāșā’ (path verb) and hālak (manner verb), and their respective Iban translations in Bup Kudus Baru, shows that the Iban language, much like Malay and Urak Lawoi’ from the same language family, is of path-salient nature in principle, but at the same time displays the use of serial verb constructs, a feature of equipollently-framed languages when manner verbs are required. The author concludes with some suggestions of ways to apply the Talmy-Slobin model in Bible translation, from the point of view of translators, translation officers, and their institutions.

Bible Translation as Incarnation of the Word of God: Transformational Power through Form and Meaning 《圣经》翻译是上帝话语的化身:形式与意义的转化力量

Bible translation is not a neutral activity, divested of any moral, spiritual, or cultural claim or responsibility. Form has often distorted meaning but happily meaning has often created new hybrid forms in different cultures. This paper addresses the need to work out the incarnational aspect of Bible translation in terms of a conscious multimodal perspective. First, there is a need for a philosophical-theological account of the dialectical relationship between form and meaning. Second, we need to reinterpret the relationship among different types of embodied performance, such as oral and written translation, as part of the same multimodal reality. Finally, Bible translation should promote the appropriation of Scripture through the community’s culture in different forms in order to unleash its transformational power. Multimodal theory can offer a valuable tool to treat all types and modes of translation as equal, but distinct, expressions, thus acknowledging different cultures, people groups, and communities of faith.

Since its publication and subsequent revisions, the Good News Bible (GNB) has remained popular among certain segments of the population, used by millions of people. It often serves as a model text for Bible translation projects in various parts of the world that adopt the functional equivalence approach, with far-reaching consequences. This article begins with a brief overview of GNB, examines some issues pertaining to using GNB as a model text, and highlights some areas where GNB could be adapted and localized to better serve the needs of the intended users.
