ABSTRACT Participation in either individual or group counseling during a counseling graduate program provides multiple personal and professional benefits. However, a consistent procedure for its implementation is not recognized within the profession. The barriers and benefits of requiring a personal counseling experience for graduate students are provided. Additionally, a policy for required counseling is offered as a recommendation to programs and to the profession.

ABSTRACT This article adapts the Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) Principles and Practices of Leadership Excellence (PPLE) to a school counseling context to enhance leadership excellence. This further bridges the gap between counseling leadership broadly and school counseling leadership. The authors explore the implementation of a Comprehensive Developmental School Counseling Program (CDSCP) through the use of the CSI PPLE to further develop research, training, and practice.

ABSTRACT This study reexamined the factor structure of the 62-item Professional Identity Scale in Counseling (PISC). An exploratory factor analysis suggested a 16-item, four-factor solution, and all four factors were positively correlated with subscales of the Professional Identity and Values Scale (PIVS). Confirmatory factory analysis revealed that this model is a good candidate for further testing.

ABSTRACT Incarcerated populations face significant obstacles to receiving mental health counseling. Correctional counselors are often the sole advocates for these services, and although they have ethical obligations to advocate for their clients, they face unique challenges. The purpose of this article is to identify advocacy needs and challenges and to provide recommendations to improve advocacy efforts by correctional counselors. Recommendations are focused on areas of advocacy promoted by the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies.

ABSTRACT The current study examined perceptions of professional identity among international counselor education (CE) doctoral students. A Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) design was used to explore the experiences of 13 international CE doctoral students. All participants had a clear understanding of the emerging nature of their professional identities, cited the impact of engaging in professional development opportunities, and described the importance of faculty relationships to their professional identity development. Many participants also described how their values resonated with the CE field and perceived other support systems (e.g., peer, family, community) as important to their professional identities. Implications and recommendations are discussed.

ABSTRACT Mentoring is a professional leadership contribution of counselor educators resulting in personal and vocational benefits for students. A need to understand research-informed mentoring from the mentor perspective exists as much of the literature is informed by the mentee perspective. In this study, an expert panel of counselor educator mentoring award recipients completed three questionnaire rounds for the purpose of identifying mentoring components. Consensus was reached on 141 items. Recommendations for implementation and training are discussed.

ABSTRACT There has been an increase in the number of CACREP-accredited programs since the last standard revision cycle in 2009. However, little is known about what these programs and liaisons experienced prior, during, and after the accreditation process. This phenomenological study explored these facets through the perceptions of program liaisons. Identified themes include motivations, support, and hindrances of seeking accreditation, problem-solving strategies, impact of accreditation, and counselor identity. Recommendations for future research are provided.

ABSTRACT We explored Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) primary chapter faculty advisors’ (CFAs) understandings and experiences of professional counselor identity through the use of interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results suggest that CFAs experienced and understood their professional counselor identity through (a) meaningful interactions with students, (b) a sense of pride in their CFA role, and (c) a sense of cohesiveness the role provided. Implications for CFAs, CSI chapters, and the development of professional counseling identity are included.

ABSTRACT Counselor leadership is vital to advancing the counseling profession. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs has required leadership development as part of counselor training; however, little is known about how leadership skills are acquired in counselor preparation. Based on a content analysis of data from 136 Chi Sigma Iota chapters, leadership skill building efforts were identified. Implications for training and research are provided.
