ABSTRACT Recognizing, measuring, and developing leadership attitudes and skills in school counselors is needed to support students, school counseling programs, and school communities. Specifically, there is a need to examine transformational leadership attitudes and skills of school counselors that inspire, motivate, and empower individuals to participate in the vision for comprehensive school counseling programs. The construction and exploration of a transformational leadership inventory for school counselors is presented. Through exploratory factor analyses (n = 217) and confirmatory factor analyses (n = 676) with school counselors, a one-factor inventory of transformational leadership evolved. Implications for school counseling research and professional development are offered.

ABSTRACT This study explored the content, methodology, and design trends present in counselor education dissertations. The dissertations examined were drawn from a random selection of CACREP-accredited doctoral programs located at Carnegie-classified research universities. In descending order, the three content areas most selected were: (a) counselor education, (b) school counseling, and (c) multicultural counseling. The majority of the dissertations reviewed made use of quantitative methods (64%). With quantitative studies, observational designs were the most-employed category (89%).

ABSTRACT The school counseling literature contains little research and practice-based scholarship to support school counselors’ work with LGBT youth within school contexts, which may be at odds with the ethical and professional responsibilities of the school counselor. This article adopts an ecological framework to help school counselors navigate potential ethical issues when working with and advocating on behalf of LGBT students. Ecological and systemic recommendations are outlined to help strengthen the ethical practice of school counselors.

ABSTRACT The Community Counseling, Education, and Research Center (CCERC) model addresses a critical public health need for accessible, affordable, high-quality mental health services focused on wellness. Within a southeastern urban community, the multicultural and social justice foundation of the model responds to systemic needs and creates an optimal learning environment for counselor education graduate students, unavailable in traditional health-care and human service systems. A client study is offered to demonstrate the application of the model.

Development of the Dynamic Leadership in Counseling Scale–Self-Report 动态领导力在心理咨询量表中的发展——自我报告
Q2 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2017-06-12 DOI: 10.1080/2326716X.2017.1333048

ABSTRACT The authors developed the Dynamic Leadership in Counseling Scale–Self-Report (DLCS-SR) and tested for evidence for validity and internal consistency with a sample of 218 participants. They found evidence for a single-factor model of global leadership behaviors among counselors in the current sample as well as evidence for convergent validity and strong internal consistency. Implications for counseling leadership research and practice are discussed in light of the findings.

ABSTRACT This study examined the association between the high school counselor–parent relationship and students’ postsecondary enrollment (PSE) in a nationally representative sample of 4,406 parents selected from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009. Findings indicated that parents’ postsecondary expectations, their participation in schools, and STEM engagement were all positively related to students’ postsecondary enrollment. Parent contact with the school counselor was negatively associated with taking postsecondary classes.

Q2 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2017-05-12 DOI: 10.1080/2326716X.2017.1322930

ABSTRACT The expression “cutting a Gordian knot” refers to dealing with an intractable situation with decisive action. The counseling profession needs to take decisive action on the Gordian knot of evidenced-based practice (EBP), yet incorporating EBP while retaining the profession’s core humanistic values is a challenge. Collaborative leadership among practitioners, counselor educators, and students is needed to conduct EBP research for the counseling field. A guide to developing intraprofessional relationships and suggested research approaches are provided.
