This article is based on a consideration of the audiovisual text as a system in which different signifying codes converge, giving it a multimodal nature. Studies on the nature of the audiovisual text have addressed a multitude of aspects to date, although there are still concepts to be explained within the audiovisual paradigm. One such aspect has to do with varieties of language, specifically with the notion of sociolect. After a review of the literature, fragments of television sitcoms will be analysed to observe the possible audiovisual nature of the given sociolect. Specifically, it will be illustrated how language levels, slang, and scientific-technical language deal with audiovisual humour. The idea will be fostered that in this type of text, sociolects go beyond the linguistic scope and connect with the aural and visual dimensions. Accordingly, phenomena such as humour can be constructed thanks to elements that surpass a purely linguistic conception of sociolects. Remote interpreting, particularly telephone interpreting, was implemented in Spain less than 20 years ago and, since then, it has become increasingly common. Its use has even increased during the last months, due to COVID-19 circumstances and the subsequent growth of telecommuting. This paper aims at mapping remote interpreting services in Spain. With that purpose, structured qualitative interviews were conducted with representatives of the six main Spanish companies offering these services. The results show a diffusion of telephone interpreting across the country and an incipient presence of video-link interpreting. Este artículo se centra en demostrar cómo la traducción poética depende estrechamente de la tipología lingüística. La traducción poética se caracteriza por centrarse en la función estética del lenguaje, por lo que la forma es especialmente relevante. Precisamente por ello, en este artículo se va a trabajar sobre el haiku japonés, una forma poética caracterizada por su brevedad y su conceptismo, de manera que la mínima expresión debe transmitir el máximo contenido. Concretamente se va a analizar un famoso haiku de Bashō, considerado el paradigma de los haikus de la escuela de este autor, para demostrar cómo la tipología lingüística de la lengua japonesa facilita la expresión del sentido estético que transmite el poema. Es cierto que este famosísimo haiku ha sido analizado en innumerables ocasiones, pero lo que se propone en este trabajo es un análisis desde la tipología lingüística, una demostración de cómo las características tipológicas del japonés se adecuan íntimamente a la estética del haiku de Bashō, y una demostración también de cómo esta adecuación entre lengua origen y sentido del poema constituye un escollo para la traducción, cuyas soluciones se valorarán en dos lenguas tipológicamente distintas, el inglés y el español. El trabajo se divide en las siguientes partes: En primer lugar, se exponen las características tipológicas del japonés frente a las de lenguas de otros tipos lingüísticos. Seguidamente se explicita cuál es el sentido abstracto que transmiten los poemas de la escuela de Bashō, lo que permitirá establecer las características de su estética. Seguidamente se mostrará la adecuación entre la tipología lingüística del japonés y la esencia de contenido que pretende transmitir el poema. Finalmente se analizarán varias traducciones del poema a dos lenguas de grupos tipológicos diferentes, inglés y español, y se juzgará hasta qué punto resulta posible lograr la traducción en cada caso. Actualmente, la figura del gestor de proyectos de traducción continúa siendo una gran desconocida para gran parte de los recién egresados del Grado de Traducción e Interpretación en España. No obstante y, debido al auge del sector y del gran volumen de traducciones del mercado, esta figura resulta cada vez más necesaria. Por ello, se ha convertido recientemente en una de las principales salidas dentro del mercado laboral de este sector, aunque sus funciones y competencias siguen siendo, en ocasiones, desconocidas para las nuevas generaciones de traductores. Esto podría deberse, principalmente, al hecho de que debido a la limitación en tiempo y en créditos ETCS a la que están sujetos los vigentes planes de estudio en el Grado de Traducción e Interpretación en España, en donde la formación con respecto a la gestión de proyectos queda relevada, en ocasiones, a un segundo plano. En el presente artículo se muestran los resultados obtenidos de una encuesta distribuida entre 41 egresados de dicho grado que ejercen o han ejercido como gestores para comprobar hasta qué punto disponen de las competencias y conocimientos necesarios para ejercer como tal. Finalmente, se analiza la oferta vigente en esta materia, tanto dentro de los planes de estudio del Grado de Traducción e Interpretación, como de posgrado en las universidades españolas para determinar si, en caso de existir carencias a este respecto, podrían estas ser suplidas a posteriori. One of the major challenges in English>Arabic simultaneous interpreting (SI) is the handling of structural asymmetry between subject-verb-object (SVO) English and the verb-subject-object (VSO) structure in Modern Standard Arabic (henceforth Arabic). In Arabic, a VSO word order is dominant although a nominal clause with several variations is also available, including a marked SVO structure with a preverbal subject followed by a verbal predicate (VPr.) functioning as its khabar (rheme/comment). This paper reports on an empirical study of the handling of structural asymmetry between English SVO and Arabic VSO structures in English>Arabic SI. The study uses a parallel corpus consisting of the transcription of 10 multiple Arabic SI versions of three political English speeches. We hypothesize that the Arabic simultaneous interpreters are more likely to use the English-mimicking SVO structure since it is easier to process and requires less cognitive load on their memory. The results of our corpus-based analysis indicate that the marked SVO structure was used more frequently than the unmarked VSO structure. These results lead to the conclusion that the use of the SVO clause is a feature of English>Arabic SI. We also conclude that the Arabic simultaneous interpreters were effectively engaged in «form-based processing» by opting for the structure that has the closest match to English SVO structures as a tactic to cope with syntactic asymmetry. Our conclusions lend support to the «language-pair specificity» hypothesis since the lack of need for restructuring is only available in SI between language pairs with similar or flexible structures. As lecturers and researchers in translation and interpreting, we are aware of the need to design curricula so that students are well equipped, and able to respond to the requirements of modern society. In the world today, there is an evident gap between what is actually taught in higher education and what should be taught to meet student needs. Even though various studies have already focused on the impact of constructs, such as self-regulation, empathy, or creativity, on performance quality, there is still a long way to go. In order to bridge this gap and highlight the role of the university as a transformational agent, our study uses LifeComp, the European framework for the personal, social, and learning to learn key competence. The objective of this research was firstly to discover the transversal competences that are most highly valued by employers in the language industry sector; and secondly, to identify the competences that need more attention in curricula. For this purpose, a questionnaire-based study was designed and administered to translation companies based in Spain. The results obtained indicate that these competences are necessary to foster employability as well as real wealth creation in a lifelong learning context. This study is part of a broader project within the LifeComp framework, in which a competence-based psycho-educational intervention was designed and is now integrated in the translation and interpreting degree programme at the University of Granada (Spain).
