The Aadhaar number has become a basic identification system for all Indian residents and is used for all purposes from air ticket booking, to ration cards and opening bank accounts. The purpose of Aadhaar in India started with a basic need to provide access to public services and Government benefits. But currently, Aadhaar is considered as a high potential, technology-enabled unique identification system that upholds the financial inclusion agenda for the Government of India. Further, its usage is growing day by day like making UPI transactions with only the Aadhaar number and linking many financial systems with Aadhaar. Implementing Aadhaar in a massive country like India is not an easy task but the Unique Identification Authority of India achieved it effectively with strong backing from the Government. This case discusses the origin, features, penetration and growth of Aadhaar and its role in financial inclusion. It also examines similar identification systems in other countries. The case deliberates the challenges faced in the implementation of Aadhaar in India.

Did a USB drive disrupt a nuclear program? A Defense in Depth (DiD) teaching case 一个u盘破坏了核项目吗?纵深防御(DiD)教学案例

Defense in Depth (DiD) has become an industry buzzword. But practicing DiD is easier said than done. While cybersecurity researchers have predominantly focused on securing corporate networks, there remains a serious gap in endpoint-threat awareness. Yet endpoint threats were the progenitor of 68% of breaches and hacks in 2019 (Computers Nationwide, 2022), a vulnerability that increased during the COVID-19 lockdown with relaxed BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policies, more IoTs, and cheaper and larger USB flash drives. This teaching case uses the 2009 Stuxnet attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities to exemplify how a single USB drive was used as an endpoint threat to disrupt a nuclear infrastructure, drawing attention to the need for and how to practice DiD to counter towering complexities ushered in burgeoning endpoints cyberattacks, from hacks to ransomware. The case shows the need for DiD to simultaneously pay heed toward physical, technical, and processual (administrative) measures to prevent, defend, and mitigate cyberattacks, from hacks to ransomware. The case and its teaching notes highlight the opportunities and challenges of practicing DiD for endpoints, from flash drives to IoTs.

Squadeasy, founded in France in 2014 with a move-to-earn app, launched a metaverse called Squadland in 2022, with a goal of increasing the company’s positive impact on the planet. When app users engaged in fitness activity in the real world, they earned tokens to buy land and other digital assets (NFTs) in Squadland, thereby improving the environment both inside the app and in the real world; Squadeasy bought land in the real world to mirror users’ actions in the metaverse. In this way, users could contribute to positive social change and have a sustainable effect on the world. This case discusses users’ motivations to engage in this metaverse, through the lens of Self Determination Theory. First, rather than fun and rewards, identified regulation is the relevant motivation to trigger commitment to the metaverse as it related to personal values and self-identity. Second, three external situational factors (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) positively increase commitment and will help users stay with the app. The metaverse fits well with these three external situational factors and can help achieve actual sustainable change.

In 2012, Stanford University graduates “Ian Shakil” and “Pelu Tan” founded Augmedix in Silicon Valley (Augmedix Remote Documentation Services, 2019). Augmedix serves patients in the United States and three other countries. One of them is Bangladesh. This case is developed to present the operational framework of Augmedix Bangladesh based on secondary sources of information. To free up doctors’ time, this app instantly documents doctor-patient talks in the patient’s medical file. Augmedix’s platform uses NLP Technology and skilled staff to ensure correct and consistent documentation. In Bangladesh, this highly skilled group goes by the name “Scribe.” Using audio and visual input, a doctor in the United States and a scribe in Bangladesh (Augmedix BD) build a patient’s medical record in real-time. Clinicians using the Augmedix Ambient Automation Platform carry out Augmedix processes. This innovation will reduce the amount of time spent by doctors manually documenting patient information. This innovative technology might save doctors two to 3 hours per day. In this service, they provide live communication, notes, data service, etc.

The service industry is polarizing e-commerce in Bangladesh across multiple sectors. Sheba.xyz is a marketplace for household services linking customers with verified on-demand professional service providers. By integrating technology and service experts, the platform has transformed the service industry, paving the way for other service provider markets to also adopt virtual strategies. This is probably because online platforms, like Sheba.xyz, have a sustainable future—commercially speaking—in this domain. Furthermore, the notion of an industry’s lifecycle has become outdated as innovations can be frequently made in a virtual form. This case provides an overview of Sheba.xyz, along with its current challenges and its future opportunities.

Giottus is one of India’s most preferred cryptocurrency exchanges, which saw a user growth rate of more than 400% during the pandemic. The platform offers unique and innovative products and secured transactions, making its application interface very user-friendly. This case study elucidates the various factors that enable the immense growth of Giottus exchange in the cryptocurrency market. The case also discusses cryptocurrency’s existing regulatory environment and its challenges. This teaching case also addresses the significant issues that deter the growth of cryptocurrency exchanges in India. It also addresses the future pathway for crypto investments in India and how exchanges like Giottus play an essential role in regulating their market vulnerability.

Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO): The case of MakerDAO 去中心化自治组织(DAO): MakerDAO的案例

The global adoption and diffusion of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies has given rise to a new form of organizing referred to as decentralized autonomous organizations (DAO). Many DAOs sit at the intersection between decentralized blockchain technologies and finance, so-called decentralized finance (DeFi). This teaching case focuses on one of the most prominent and established DeFi DAOs, MakerDAO, a community-driven initiative that leverages blockchain technology to create a stablecoin pegged to the US Dollar as a basis for decentralized financial services such as lending and yield generation. The case describes the delicate balancing act between centralization and decentralization in the evolution of MakerDAO. It can be used in graduate business programs to achieve the following learning objectives: (1) Understand the concept of decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) as a new form of organizing in which communities leverage blockchain technologies and community-based principles to work jointly on a common goal, (2) Be able to assess the benefits and risks of novel decentralized finance (DeFi) models, such as MakerDAO, which offer alternative financial tools and resources that are not controlled by traditional financial institutions, (3) Evaluate the potential and pathway for disruptive innovation in the era of blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and Web3, where decentralized applications (dapps) on blockchain networks enable decentralized and trustless transactions and interactions.
