The phenomenal growth in cloud managed services (i.e. provisioning) is evident. But, despite the burgeoning cloud provisioning marketplace, cloud provisioning comes in various forms. Therefore, companies need to carefully and deliberately consider their cloud-managed service choices. This teaching case, using the context of Telecom companies’ (Telcos) billing services provisioning, not only highlights various provisioning engagement models but also surfaces an interesting trilemma, competing facets, that companies need to consider as they embark upon and expand upon their existing services portfolio.

This case study looks at data analytics within a police force, examining how a police force recognised the need to make better use of the data and information they held, and how they started to professionalise their data analytical capability. This real-world example of the decisions and issues faced by a police force in the UK when looking at data analytics will explore the impact of data analytics on crime prevention, resource allocation, and community engagement, and the associated issues faced by a law enforcement body around culture, ethics and technology when implementing such an approach.

This case study delves into a novel concept termed ‘knowledge hiding’, which refers to the deliberate act of concealing information within the context of contemporary workplace technology usage. It investigates the obstacles related to the transfer of knowledge among employees, often obstructed by self-interest and time constraints. The narrative centres around an employee named Pradeep Dhev, who heavily relies on a colleague for guidance and assistance in his application process responsibilities. This behaviour adversely impacts organisational operational efficiency. In this account, we explore the potential ramifications of technology knowledge gaps, particularly in the context of a custom application process known as ‘PRIAG’, exclusively developed for a specific organisation to boost productivity and optimise return on investment. However, the anticipated outcomes have not materialised as expected due to employees’ unethical reluctance to share their knowledge, driven by ambitions for advancement within the organisation. This situation creates substantial psychological pressure for mid-career employees like Dhev, who holds a G3 level position, leading to feelings of inferiority, psychological distress and the challenges of unlearning certain behaviours. The concept of knowledge hiding encompasses three interrelated components: ‘evasive hiding, rationalised hiding and playing dumb’. This study investigates the predictors of knowledge hiding and contributes to existing literature by emphasising the importance of employee training and development. It also raises awareness about the adverse effects of avoiding knowledge sharing on overall productivity and an employee’s mental well-being. To address this issue, the study suggests the application of theories such as the Interdependence Theory (IT) and Social Identity Theory (SIT), which provide valuable insights and strategies to mitigate challenges related to knowledge transfer and technology learning in the workplace. Additionally, organisations can consider maintaining a knowledge transfer database through blockchain or cloud computing to enhance overall performance and productivity.

The environment of startups in the field of information technology (IT) is strongly connected with the dynamics of finance and valuation. IT startups sometimes rely on a variety of funding sources, including Venture Capitalists (VCs), Private Equity funds, Government subsidies, and even Hedge funds. Overvaluation has emerged as a key hazard harming the IT startup ecosystem. This phenomenon occurs when the valuation of a startup exceeds its true worth, which is frequently driven by enthusiastic investor optimism, market trends, and competitive pressures. The case addresses factors that might lead to overvaluation during funding rounds of startups. The case also explores various conditions like global economic slowdown, regulatory measures, sustainability of the product or idea of a startup that mitigates downturn of valuation. The measures from all the stakeholders of startups viz., investors, founders, governments etc. is dealt with for tackling the overvaluation conundrum.

Deaf from birth and of Moroccan origin, Sid Mouar has been a successful restaurant owner for 8 years. His restaurant specializes in serving Moroccan cuisine and employs individuals with disabilities. The ordering process utilizes sign language for communication. This case study delves into the reasons behind the restaurant’s success by examining the story of the deaf entrepreneur with a disability and by identifying all the service attributes mentioned in customer feedback. By utilizing the tetraclass model, the impact of each service attribute on customer satisfaction and dissatisfaction is evaluated. This analysis offers insights into what aspects are fundamental, crucial, additional, or secondary in terms of customer satisfaction, thus contributing to an understanding of the restaurant’s achievement. The case also delves into topics related to service quality, customer satisfaction, competitive advantages, promotional elements, and the restaurant’s future adaptations to remain competitive.

This case study explores the intricacies of technology overuse in the workplace, exemplified by an employee, Reshma, who shows signs of excessive dependency on her smartwatch. Through her narrative, we delve into the potential implications of technology overreliance and its correlation with instant gratification theory and reward deficiency syndrome (RDS), a condition characterized by an insatiable need for dopamine-driven gratification. The study underscores the impact of these dynamics on productivity, the quality of work, and overall employee well-being.
