Helgener over det hele: Polymorf middelalderkristendom i Vor Frue Kirke, Skive

English ABSTRACT: Drawing on iconographic material in the form of a decoration of church frescoes from the year 1522 in the medieval parish church Vor Frue Kirke in Skive (in Jutland) this article examines the Christian cult and mythology of saints in the Late Middle Ages as an expression of a polytheistic, systematizing world view. Taking a theoretical departure point in Robert Bellah’s theory of religious evolution concerning archaic and axial forms of religion and within the medieval Christian world view, the article provides an analysis of the catalogue of saints in Skive to determine which functions each saint seems to occupy in a pantheon and to uncover a grand scale hierarchy of the decoration as a whole. Finally, the catalogue of saints is put further into the big comparative perspective within Bellah’s theoretical framework by a comparison with the ancient Mesopotamian kudurru of the Babylonian king Melishipak 2nd as a typical archaic and analogistic system of gods. DANSK RESUMÉ: Med eksempel i ikonografisk materiale i form af en udsmykning af kalkmalerier fra år 1522 i den middelalderlige sognekirke Vor Frue Kirke i Skive bliver den senmiddelalderlige kristne helgenkult og -mytologi i denne artikel under-søgt som udtryk for en polyteistisk, systematiserende verdensopfattelse. Med teoretisk udgangspunkt i Robert Bellahs religionsevolutionære teori om arkaiske og aksiale religionsformer og i det middelalderkristne verdenssyn gives en analyse af helgenka-taloget i Skive med henblik på at kortlægge, hvilke funktioner hver helgen udfylder i et panteon, og at afdække en overordnet hierarkisering af udsmykningen. Afslut-ningsvis sættes helgenkataloget yderligere ind i et større komparativt perspektiv via en sammenligning med den babylonske kong Melishipak 2.’s kudurru som et typisk arkaisk-analogistisk system af guder.

Leder religionsantropologins utmaningar och forskningsproblematik till nostalgiska elegier och idylliska tankar om ädla vildar?

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Theology, religious studies, the history of religion, and the anthropology of religion have different histories as research disciplines, which explains differences in how they pose research problems and define their research fields. In some respects, the disciplines have a lot in common and may cross-fertilize each other. In this article, I reflect on a theologian's critical review in Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift67 (2018) of a text applying the approach of the anthropology of religion, in order to highlight some of the issues and perspectives that distinguish the two fields. Much of the theological critique appears to derive from a lack of familiarity with the situations, contexts, and discussions that an anthropologist of religion may encounter. My focus is thus on topics such as engaged anthropology, reflexivity, culture contact, modernity, and power relations. SVENSK RESUME: Teologi, religionsvetenskap, religionshistoria och religionsantropologi bär på olika historia i sina framväxter som forskarämnen, och därmed kan olika problemställningar och forskningsfält vara aktuella. I vissa fall delar ämnena också mycket och kan befrukta varandra. Jag vill dock i denna artikel utgå från en teologs kritiska review i Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift67 (2018) av en religionsantropologisk text för att visa på några av de frågor som skiljer sig åt. George Hunt: en kwakwaka’wakw livshistorie

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Inspired by Armin W. Geertz’ research into Hopi religion and culture, I focused on the religion of another Native American people, the Kwakwaka’wakw (Kwakiutl) on the American Northwest Coast for the seminar celebrating Geertz’ 70-year birthday. The material on Kwakwaka’wakw is heavily influenced by George Hunt (1854-1933), who worked as a consultant for both Franz Boas and Edward Curtis, but is also to be regarded as an anthropologist in his own right. I choose to concentrate on the ritual aspects of George Hunt’s life story and touch on Hunt’s performance at the Chicago World’s Fair 1893, his participation in the production of Edward Curtis’ feature-length, narrative, ethnographic film In the Land of the Head Hunters(1914), and Hunt’s work as collector for museums and text-editions in collaboration with Franz Boas. In the last part of the paper, I discuss the autobiographical text on his initiation as a shaman “I Desired to Learn the Ways of the Shamans”, published by Boas in 1930, and made famous by Lévi-Strauss in the article “Le sorcier et sa magie” (1949)/ “The Sorcerer and His Magic” (1963) under the initiate’s shaman-name, Quesalid. In the last part of the paper, I discuss the autobiographical text on his initiation as a shaman “I Desired to Learn the Ways of the Shamans”, published by Boas in 1930, and made famous by Lévi-Strauss in the article “Le sorcier et sa magie” (1949)/ “The Sorcerer and His Magic” (1963) under the initiate’s shaman-name, Quesalid. \u0000DANSK RESUME: Med inspiration i Armin W. Geertz’ forskningsindsats inden for hopireligion og -kultur søgte jeg i mit indlæg til Geertz’ 70-års fødselsdags-seminar at belyse nogle kultiske aspekter af religionsudviklingen hos et andet af Amerikas oprindelige folk, kwakwaka’wakw (kwakiutl) på den amerikanske Nordvestkyst. Materialet er stærkt præget af George Hunt (1854-1933), som var konsulent for både Franz Boas og Edward Curtis, men tillige må betragtes som antropolog i sin egen ret. ENGELSK SUMMARY: The sculptures on the altarpiece of Aarhus Cathedral are a good example of 'analogism', an understanding of reality (an 'ontology') that presents an ideal reality as a harmonious order. The altarpiece sought to mediate between two in principle different types of religions: archaic religion, typical of the great cultures of ancient times, claiming a divinely guaranteed good and beautiful hierarchical world, and the axial rejection of the known reality as evil, false and full of suffering. This attempt of mediation is what defines Christianity and other great religions after the axial rebellion: The world is fundamentally bad and in need of redemption and salvation – and yet basically good and beautiful, with room for small, local miracles. These religions can therefore be regarded as 'post-axial compromise religions'. DANSK RESUME: Skulpturerne på altertavlen i Aarhus domkirke er et godt eksempel på ‘analogisme’, en virkelighedsforståelse (en ‘ontologi’) der fremstiller en ideel virkelighed som en harmonisk orden. Reformationsjubilæernes iscenesættelse af samhørighed mellem stat, kirke og folk i Danmark

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The 500th anniversary of the onset of the Lutheran reformation was celebrated in Denmark during most of 2017. Unlike the celebrations in Norway, Sweden and Germany, the Danish celebrations had a remarkable focus on the national significance of the Reformation. The celebrations ranged from large, state-sponsored national events to more than one thousand local arrangements involving civil society, educational institutions and parishes. This article analyses some of the historical Reformation jubilees in Denmark and compare them to fresh empirical material from the Danish Reformation jubilee in 2017. The analysis shows, among other things, that a recurrent theme in the celebrations was a claim of a special relationship between Denmark and God, which is a clear expression of Danish civil religion. Examples of civil-religious statements and activities are presented. DANSK RESUMÉ:500-års jubilæet for Reformationens begyndelse blev fejret i Danmark gennem det meste af 2017. I modsætning til fejringerne i Norge, Sverige og Tyskland var de danske fejringer i bemærkelsesværdig grad rettet mod reformationens nationale betydning. Fejringerne rakte fra store, statslige, nationale begivenheder til over et tusinde lokale arrangementer med deltagelse af civilsamfund, uddannelsesinstitutioner og kirkesogne. Denne artikel analyserer nogle af de historiske reformationsjubilæer og sammenligner dem med nyt empirisk materiale fra det danske reformationsjubilæum i 2017. Analysen påviser blandt andet, at et gennemgående tema i fejringerne var en påstand om et særligt forhold mellem Danmark og Gud, hvad der klart er udtryk for dansk civilreligion. I artiklen bliver der givet eksempler på civilreligiøse udsagn og aktiviteter.
