Since Cohen and Prusak's work on social capital the CSCW research community has generated a lot of interest in organizational phenomena such as trust, motivation, and interpersonal relationships and the effects thereon caused by collaborative technologies. Among the mechanisms fuelling social capital, storytelling seems to stand out as one of the important ingredients without which organizational culture and creativity is hardly imaginable ([1]).

Ecological storytelling and collaborative scientific activities

The role of storytelling in support of organizational identity and communication is well recognized [e.g. 5, 6] though there are few empirical studies of organizational storytelling practices [7] in general and fewer of scientific storytelling in particular. Stories and their use raise complex issues with respect both to community building and to the design of systems that can support their use.

Mobile networks combined with positioning techniques provide a new channel for a radically new form of cinematographic narratives that are navigable in space. Stories are received when navigating in the real world, using contextual information about the state or characteristics of the user. Traditional narratives, in its diverse forms, are a good way to convey knowledge about the real world. The ability to have constant access through mobile devices allows a new way of doing cinematographic narratives that can enhance in a significant way the viewers experience. There are many areas of application, ranging from tourism to education. It also allows integrating different target audiences, thus contributing to electronic literacy. This project has the goal of defining an architecture and to implement a system for interactive cinematographic narratives in mobile devices.

VISTAs (Virtual Interactive Story Telling Agents) interact with users through natural language query/answer patterns derived from the analysis of narrative content developed from multimedia. This paper describes the rationale for agent development, their software components, and the overall architecture for VISTAs, which are used as a form of high-level dialog manager to provide information retrieval for educational and entertainment purposes.

Digital storytelling for reflective practice in communities of learners
Pub Date : 2002-08-01 DOI: 10.1145/962185.962195

This paper will present the use of digital storytelling in community development settings to promote reflective practice and foster connections in communities of learners. Through digital storytelling, individuals learn to tell a story, and in doing so, become more effective actors in collaborative work environments. This particular form of digital storytelling encourages participants to communicate meaning on multiple levels (voice, point, emotional content, tension, story arc), and it allows storytellers to take fresh perspective on their work. Participants abstract meaning, but also give it a concrete form, as story, which can then be shared. We consider the benefits of this approach as a way to strengthen ties among participants in the creative and social outreach work in which they engage.

INTRODUCTION Problem solving often involves exploring and researching several options, weighing the advantages and disadvantages of each one, and then choosing the best option based on all information and knowledge available. It is common that the number of different options is great, and that their advantages and disadvantages are unclear and not obvious. And usually, as the goal is to solve the problem as quickly and cost-effectively as possible, many participants with different areas of expertise get involved in the process. These characteristics frame the problem solving process and storytelling and the generation of stories. In this short paper, I will identify some design issues to consider when designing computer-support for storytelling.

The value of a virtual environment for learning about narrative

We suggest that a virtual environment can provide a powerful tool to support young children in both 'divingin' and to 'stepping-out'. Aspects of the children's behaviour in the environment can be recorded by the system to aid them in objectifying their activity, supporting reflective thought and discussion. The children can then re-engage with the environment deploying any new conceptual understanding.

Recently, learning activities adopting web documents as learning materials have become quite prosperous with the rapid developments of network environment. This change has brought about diversification of needs in learning. Therefore, development of novel learning styles, which can satisfy various needs based on each learner's interests, knowledge, and so on, is strongly demanded. In this research, a synthetic environment for supporting novel learning styles has been developed. This paper mainly describes algorithms for supporting instructors to grasp learning situation, which is quite important for effective guidance. Specifically, algorithms for constructing valuable support knowledge based on visualization of learning information are developed. Algorithms for creating guidance navigation, which manages each instructor's guidance styles and assists his selecting support knowledge, are also developed. Finally, the effectiveness of developed support algorithms has been shown by experiments.

Coping with conflict in concurrent design environment
Pub Date : 2002-04-01 DOI: 10.1145/945541.945544

In concurrent design the design teams participating in a project have different perspectives, and those differences lead to conflicting decisions. The resolution model, mediator, proposed in this work provides system-mediated resolution to optimize the design process in general. This paper introduces the core concept of the mediator, which produces a resolution network from a given constraint network and determines the most optimistic resolution in terms of satisfying overall constraints based on rational reasoning.
