ABSTRACT The pervasiveness of the smartphone and the Internet among young university students can cause both benefits and problematic behaviour mediated by the motivations of the users. This study, using the Uses and Gratifications (U&G) approach and through a quota sampling of university students in Chile (n = 350), Ecuador (n = 350) and Spain (n = 350), sought to identify the gratifications that obtain when using smartphones to access the Internet. The multigroup analysis of invariance showed the moderation of the student’s cultural context. These findings imply that the analysis of the gratifications associated with the use of smartphones and the Internet should focus both on the technology itself and on the cultural context of the users.

ABSTRACT Current study examines the multi-dimensionality of inter-ethnic conflict in Balinuraga, Lampung. A more culturally oriented and locally embedded approach to conflict resolution is needed. This paper addresses such need using face negotiation theory and qualitative approach to identify the relevance of cultural competence towards assessing conflict resolution. Findings show that Balinese tends to use solidarity facework, self-face and other-face, biconstrual, and accommodating. Lampungese employs tact facework and self-face, biconstrual, and dominating. Regarding cultural competence, Balinese shows appropriateness and effectivity based on Tatvamasi, Tri Hita Karana and Menyama Braya local wisdom while Lampungese employs communication adaptation based on Muakhi, Piil Pesenggiri and Ngangken.

Cultural Semiospheres in Contact in Foreign Language Teaching 外语教学中的文化交际

ABSTRACT This paper probes into the many facets of Europe, through the course book ‘English for General High School 2’ and attempts to answer to questions such as, which is Europe’s identity today? How do the texts deal with the influx of illegal immigrants from the east, human rights, and the phenomenon of xenophobia? What cultural aspects of Europe are depicted in the books? How is the ‘post-crisis Europe’ depicted in the coursebook? We focus on the coursebook which is used in the third class of Greek senior high school, as this grade level is considered to be a very important language level, especially in English as a foreign language. At this language level and grade students are on the verge of graduating from senior high school and are moving on to either further their studies in tertiary education or are preparing to find a job. The study of the aforementioned coursebook yields two basic semiotic conclusions. The first is that a selection of signs have been made which obey the principles of binary opposition. The second is that students in Greece will learn aspects of the American culture, a lot better, if exposed to them through a coursebook - even if that is an English as a foreign language coursebook.

ABSTRACT Using a social identity theory framework, the present study offers a typology of memorable hate messages from 170 college-aged students. The memorable hate messages focused on racism, body, gender/sexism, homophobia, religion/anti-religious group, poverty/classism, ability, organizational-affiliation, and politicians/political ideologies. Additionally, the relationships between memorable hate messages, personal characteristics, relational outcomes, identity salience, and intergroup biases are explored. Future research and limitations are also discussed.

The Sociopragmatic and Pragmalinguistic Strategies in L2 Pragmatic Competence: A Case of Pakistani ESL Learners 社会语用策略和语用语言策略对二语语用能力的影响——以巴基斯坦ESL学习者为例

ABSTRACT This study contributes to the existing literature on teaching ESL by investigating Pakistani learners’ responses to the apology speech acts. The study considered the two primary aspects of pragmatic competence: pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic. A multimethod data collection approach – a discourse completion task and a scaled-response questionnaire – was employed to elicit performance and perception data from 150 participants divided into three groups. Findings indicate that Pakistani ESL learners mostly produced the semantic content consisting of cultural-specific and language-specific patterns of apology responses. There also occurred pragmatics transfer in the use of apology responses of Pakistani ESL learners. Findings suggest the inclusion of sociopragmatic competence into the ESL curriculum.

College-level students’ development of intercultural communicative competence: a quantitative study in Vietnam 越南大学生跨文化交际能力发展的定量研究

ABSTRACT There has been limited empirical research probing English language learners’ perspectives towards Intercultural communicative competence (ICC). Specifically, it is mostly unknown how English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) students respond to ICC emergence in some constituents and the degree to which they master each constituent in the socio-cultural learning context. This study evaluated the ICC perceptions of 310 EFL students in Vietnam. Findings demonstrated that ICC constructs were interconnected and diversely perceived by different genders, ages, and English proficiency levels. Implications are discussed regarding how the localized ICC construct can support policies, curriculum developments, and EFL instructional practices.

Exploring the Relational Nature of Identity Gap Management in Sexual Communication 探讨性交往中身份差距管理的关系本质

ABSTRACT Framed through the Communication Theory of Identity, the present study investigates strategies individuals in less normative relationships (e.g., LGBTQ relationships, polyamorous, BDSM) (n = 305) use to manage identity gaps that emerge in their sexual communication. A variety of passive and direct strategies occurred to manage identity-laden tensions amid partnered sexual communication. Findings support previous research, which finds individuals engage in self-acceptance, reframing normativity, label changing, passing, disengagement, hyper engagement, and closeted enactment. In addition, the present study introduces partner engagement as a management strategy for identity gaps, further framing identity gaps as a relational phenomenon.

Explicitation in the Intercultural Communication of Technical Culture in Arabic-Malay Translation of Rihlat Ibn Battuta Rihlat Ibn Battuta阿马来翻译中技术文化的跨文化交际

ABSTRACT This paper examines the procedure of explicitation in rendering Arabic technical cultural elements into Malay. This study is mainly based on collecting data, including items of food & drinks and clothing, which are taken from Rihlat Ibn Battuta and its Malay translation Pengembaraan Ibn Battuta. This research has been carried out based on the Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) methodology and a methodological modification of Vinay and Darbelnet’s taxonomy. The findings revealed that explicitation is the most frequently applied procedure in the Arabic-Malay translation, which involves several forms of intratextual and paratextual explicitation.

This study is mainly based on collecting data, including items of food & drinks and clothing, which are taken from Rihlat Ibn Battuta and its Malay translation Pengembaraan Ibn Battuta. This research has been carried out based on the Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) methodology and a methodological modification of Vinay and Darbelnet’s taxonomy. Online Public Responses to the “Send Her Back” Chant at the 2019 Greenville Rally 网上公众对2019年格林维尔集会上“送她回去”口号的反应

ABSTRACT The Squad is a group of four progressive women of colour elected to the U.S. Congress in 2018 who have been vocal critics especially of immigration and environmental policies. During a Republican rally in North Carolina in 2019, Trump disparaged the Squad for being critical of him. The crowd responded chanting “Send her/them back.” This study conducted a content analysis of public comments posted on four online news sites assessing rejection or approval for this chant. Content analysis showed a striking difference across the sites based on the amount of approval for the chant. Comments on Fox News and a conservative Twitter site supported the chant and characterized members of the Squad as obstructionist and uncooperative. There was little support for the chant on the Washington Post and the New York Times sites. This study examined how users who posted these comments explained/justified their responses to the chant.

Understanding Social Integration of Chinese Students in the Netherlands: The Role of Friendships 了解中国留学生在荷兰的社会融入:友谊的作用

ABSTRACT This study explores the lived experiences of 28 Chinese international students to enhance understanding of their social integration in the Dutch higher education institutions, with a focus on intercultural friendships. The findings indicate that establishing friendships with non-Chinese students is challenging due to several reasons: language comprehension/production, cultural distance, interests in different social activities, lack of initiatives from Dutch students, (perceived) prejudice and discrimination, and dependence on the Chinese community. The findings underscore the need for institutions to provide more support for Chinese students regarding linguistic competences and cultural understanding, while highlighting the importance of promoting an inclusive academic environment.
本研究探讨了28名中国留学生的生活经历,以加深对他们在荷兰高等教育机构中的社会融合的了解,重点是跨文化友谊。研究结果表明,由于语言理解/表达、文化距离、对不同社会活动的兴趣、荷兰学生缺乏主动性、(感知到的)偏见和歧视以及对中国社区的依赖,与非中国学生建立友谊是具有挑战性的。研究结果强调了各院校在语言能力和文化理解方面为中国学生提供更多支持的必要性,同时强调了促进包容性学术环境的重要性。
