The janissaries were the base of the military innovation for the Ottoman expansion; on the contrary, they do not merely constitute a warlike elite. Their origin, their creation, their functions and their relation with the Turkish society are the axes of this study, resulting in that the above mentioned military body did not limit itself to a merely military character. In addition, we will give special attention to the change in the Janissaries’ logic of behaviour throughout the 17th century.

During the years of the Spanish Transition, from 1975 to 1982, important political, social, economic and cultural changes were produced. However, in the police system, which had inherited the public order policy of Franco dictatorship, these changes were much slower and needed of the thrust of a police syndicalism, calling for changes within the police forces. This article aims to analyse the impact of this police unionism on the UCD and PSOE governments in the first years of democracy, their ideology and the methods used to achieve their objectives. Finally, prove whether these objectives really were fundamental to change the policies of public order to public security in our country.

The main objective of this article is to limit the cultural tendency to giving the memory of the victims a museum-like status and to analyze, within the cultural spaces, the so called memorial museums and places of conscience. In summary, this paper presents some examples of the countries that have given this modality of memory the status of museum, in order to further deepen in the confrontation and social processes that generate the representation of this memorial heritage, to define the languages and formats for its transmission, and to expose a critical reading of the trajectory experienced in Spain.

The need for the Portuguese Restoration War arose between 1640 and 1668, becoming imperative the defence of the Alentejo border through the adaptation of old military defences and the elaboration of new projects. Thus, it is noted that some military engineers, who were working on the adaptation of Alentejo fortifications at the time, began to serve the Castilian enemy, making their projects to be modified. The mobility between Portuguese and Castilian people during this period are also highlighted, indicating concrete examples. Border crossings and assaults are taking into account to control the correspondence between both kingdoms. This control also allows us to analyse the situation of the enemy, being possible to know their strategic position, if they would be close to the well-organized border places, as well as the number of men and the weapons they would have. These analyses will be made from original documentation existing in the National Archive of Torre do Tombo, in Lisbon, in the Public Library of Evora, and in the General Archive of Simancas.

In his work, Lope de Vega recreated scenes in which water becomes an indispensable element in the construction of Madrid’s literary image. He uses the benefits of water, rivers and fountains as argument in defense of the town within the chorographic standard of the Modern Age. The underlying theme of his poetry is thus the classic urban idyllic model applied to a town that aspired to be the steady seat of the Court. With the introduction of these historiographic topoi, Lope de Vega contributed to the spread of the laudes of Madrid through theatre.

After the failed coup d’etat in Cyprus, the leaders of the Greek military junta called for the formation of a civil government in order to deal with the crisis. The experienced conservative leader Konstantinos Karamanlis returned in July of 1974 after eleven years in exile to form a government. This article examines the most notable aspects of the new political system of the Metapolitefsi and how they marked the rupture with the past. We will focus on the legalization of the Communist Party, the abolishment of the monarchy, the new constitution of 1975 and the powers accredited to the President, the balance of power between the President and the Prime Minister and finally, on the constitutional revision of 1986.
