By “anadeixis” (a termed first coined by Ehlich, 1982) is meant, prototypically, the indexical functioning of certain context-bound expressions to target discourse entities which are either not yet topical, or whose erstwhile topical status has faded. It is the discourse-structuring function of anadeictic indexicals that will be the particular focus of this study. The basis for the discussion will be two short whole texts, in two languages (French and English). This will make it possible to show how certain ‘strict’-anadeictic and discourse-deictic references may signal the macro- (content structures) and super-structures (discourse-functional structures) that characterize them. Such references may serve either to foreshadow a transition between major discourse units within a given text, or to actually introduce one.

This article is focused on a central aspect of the syntax-semantics-pragmatics interface: the so-called anaphorical relations. More precisely, it identifies a selection of shortcomings of Chomsky’s (1981) classical binding theory and Huang’s (2007) version of the pragmatic neo-Gricean apparatus, originally proposed by Levinson (1987, 1989). Besides enumerating interesting problems for certain theoretical frameworks, I highlight the need for integrating syntactic, semantic and pragmatic factors in order to construct a more adequate theoretical model for anaphora.

This article presents summarily the first results of a research in progress that aims to study the evolution of the linguistic and discursive strategies used for the reference to participants in the Parliament of Catalonia in the period 1932-38 (during the Spanish Second Republic) and from 1980, the year of the recovery of the Catalan democratic institutions, to 2013. The analysis combines qualitative and quantitative methods and shows several tendencies in the evolution of the use of the different forms and strategies. The incorporation of Goffman (1981)’s participation frameworks to the analysis provides additional data that, once described and interpreted, give a much more accurate answer to the questions set out than the analysis of only person deictic forms and honorifics. And this is relevant not only for parliamentary debates but also for any other speech event with more than two participants.

This paper adopts a radical contextualist approach to the reference of definite descriptions that contain the English expression the same, either without a complement or with a complement in the form of a head noun and/or a comparison phrase of the type as X. It is argued that definite descriptions which contain the same do not refer to a unique entity, despite the fact that the result of a comprehension test carried out seems to give some support to the belief that such descriptions may serve the function of a directly referring term.

In this paper, I analyze the ways in which spatial deictic adverbs function in Spanish. More concretely, through an analysis of spatial deictic adverbs used with depersonalizing constructions, I show how, in the absence of person deictic forms, the interpretation of spatial deictic adverbs depends not only on the physical, but more crucially on contextual cues in the discursive context. Moreover, I show that spatial adverbs used with depersonalizing constructions fulfill different functions in discourse construction than when they are used in combination with person deixis or with a concrete 3rd person reference. Indeed, in the absence of person deixis, spatial deictic adverbs take up crucial functions for the cohesion of the linguistic production.

In this article I argue for a refinement of the classic SFL approach to lexical cohesion. First, a literature overview is provided in which key principles and related categories are examined. In addition, the connection of cohesion and discourse coherence is addressed and an overview is provided of the wide range of applications that the former has in such fields as genre studies, language teaching and learning, psycholinguistics and computational linguistics, among others. The core SFL models of cohesion are then revisited in order to propose a modified taxonomy of lexical cohesion, involving five distinct types (repetition, synonymy, opposition, inclusion and association) that are cross-classified by four kinds of distance-based ties (immediate, immediate-mediated, remote and remote-mediated). After this, the model is attested in the telephone conversation and broadcast discussion components of the International Corpus of English-Great Britain. The analysis of 10,042 cohesive ties reveals that repetition and association are the most frequently used lexical cohesion strategies across the two genres. They are overwhelmingly produced over speakers’ turns and remote-mediated ties. The results further indicate that lexical patterns collaborate in topic management, staging and turn-taking strategies.

The aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between lexical and grammatical encoding of reference and the encoding of clausal and discursive aspectuality. We observe lexical and grammatical forms of reference to an individual (Leo Messi, a Barcelona football player) with regard to the aspectual type of discourse segments corresponding to semantic States-of-Affairs and Episodes (that is, coherent combinations of States-of-Affairs). The analysis is based on two news items about Leo Messi’s fourth Goal Boot award: one in French and the other one in Catalan.

This contribution aims to study a phenomenon which has recently emerged in Catalan and which seems to contradict the foundations of referential cohesion. It is a phenomenon parallel to what in the Spanish linguistic tradition has been dubbed le-for-les, that is to say, the use of a singular dative clitic when doubling a plural indirect object, as in Li[sg.] he donat el llibre als nens[pl.] ‘I have given the book to the kids’. I will show that this phenomenon, which is more and more present in Valencian varieties as well as in the Catalan spoken in the area of Barcelona, can be accounted for as an instance of depronominalization of the dative clitic pronoun, as a result of the generalization of dative clitic doubling which has occurred, precisely, in the mentioned varieties. As doubling becomes systematic, li looses its status of anaphoric pronoun and, deprived of any trace of agreement, it becomes just a grammatical marker in the verb, a sort of verbal affix whose sole function is to indicate the presence of a prominent argument in the sentence, the indirect object. I present a variety of factors that may create the conditions where such a verbal affix (the non-agreeing dative clitic) becomes necessary. Finally, I provide a formal analysis based on the assumption that doubling clitics are the realization of an applicative head, which is responsible of introducing the IO in the structure.
