This paper aims at providing a discussion on ’Ausbau‘ phenomena and on the influence of Latin syntactic models in the development of ancient Italian in the 14th century. This subject is addressed through the analysis of the characteristics of non-finite subordinate clauses in five ancient Italian texts: three translations from Latin classical texts and two ’original‘ chronicles. The comparison between these two types of texts will highlight the interactions between translations and ’original‘ texts and the relevance of the notion of discourse tradition in the analysis of ’Ausbau‘ phenomena in Medieval Italian texts. Finally, a general typology of the processes of syntactic elaboration and of the relationships between Medieval Italian syntactic structures and Latin models is also provided.

Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird anhand ausgewählter Erinnerungsfelder – Shoah, Kolonialismus, Faschismus sowie Resistenza als wesentliches Gründungsnarrativ der Repubblica ita- liana – in Bezug auf den italienischen Kontext beleuchtet, wie groß (gerade vor dem Hintergrund aktueller revisionistischer Tendenzen) der Bedarf an ’Erinnerungsarbeit‘ nach wie vor ist und welche erinnerungskulturellen Paradigmen dabei in den Vordergrund rücken. Der Beitrag setzt sich aus einem einleitenden Überblick sowie zwei Interviews zusammen, die mit Daniele Comberiati (Université Paul-Valéry, Montpellier) und Tommaso Pepe (Brown University, USA / Guangzhou Maritime University, China) geführt wurden, die sich in ihrer Forschung u. a. mit postkolonialen Theorien, transkultureller italophoner Literatur, Memory Studies und der Darstellung der Shoah in der italienischen Literatur befassen.

The aim of this paper is to provide the first comparative, corpus-based description of the linguistic history of the Italian numeral-word zero. We show that the formal and semantic development of zero is far more complex than has been assumed and that it is intertwined with the history of cifra, originally a medieval Latin name for the symbol ’0‘. Cifra has received little attention from linguists despite the fact that its semantic development as a polysemous word is still reflected in modern Italian and in some of the other languages here explored. We examine the occurrence of these words in the context in which numerals for the symbol ’0‘ originated, namely the mathematical register, and then consider their uses in non-mathematical sources. We employ diachronic and synchronic analysis, both intragenre (within mathematical writings) and intergenre, and provide a comparative perspective by placing side-by-side works written in a variety of languages which have so far only been studied separately. Our theoretical observations and arguments cover both semantics and morphology. We argue that cifra underwent productive word-formation processes which created new lexemes via derivation and that its semantic development is a kind of expansive synecdoche. We also set out the challenges encountered in trying to explain the form zero.

The participle form of the Spanish verb chapurrear ’to speak a language badly‘ is registered in some regions of Spain – Asturias, León, Extremadura, Aragon – as a glossonym through which speakers of minority languages name their mother tongue. This article provides the first academic approach to the conceptual history of chapurreau. By focusing on the example of Ribagorça (Aragon, Northeastern Spain), it is shown that i) the glossonym derives from a verb champurrar ’to debase a liquor‘, attested since the 17th century; and ii) between 1750–1800, the verb acquired a figurative meaning which was spread not only by Spanish central administration – as it was thought–, but also by Catalan writers from the 1840s onward.

The following article examines the forms and functions of literariness in journalism. Following Italo Calvino, literariness is understood as a specific aesthetic of detour, which is put into the service of an ethics of journalistic communication. For this purpose, report- ages from the interwar period (by Pierre Mac Orlan and Joseph Kessel) and, in an outlook, also from the immediate present (by Philippe Pujol and Roberto Saviano) will be discussed. Furthermore, in a transnational comparison, the country-specific handling of literariness in journalism is explored.

O facto de os imaginários do passado co-construírem o presente é evidenciado pela litera- tura e pela arte sobre Covid-19. No caso do Brasil, foi salientado que a crise do coronavírus reforçou as estruturas da colonialidade, ou seja, os efeitos persistentes do colonialismo. Tanto as crónicas do início da Idade Moderna como os textos e fotografias contemporâneos refletem e questionam os padrões coloniais, criando interfaces biopolíticas a nível estético. Será que os produtos de períodos históricos tão diferentes produzem semelhanças relativamente à doença? Com base na teoria biopolítica, este artigo examina as obras de Ailton Krenak, Gui Christ e Alessandro Falco sobre a Covid-19, bem como as representações da doença de Leonardo do Vales e José de Anchietas na Bahia na década de 1560.
