Among recent rewritings of Don Quixote de la Mancha, the mash-up stands out as a relevant comment on the enduring presence of Cervantes’ text in contemporary culture. Don Quijote Z (2010) provides an original approach to the quixotic text: rather than rewriting Don Quixote into a different context, it inscribes zombie literature within the hypotext. Given its generic nature, the quixotic mash-up challenges the politics of exclusion from the canon, while highlighting in a self-referential manner its own position on its margins. In 1905, during the Third Centenary of the original publication of the Quixote, was published in Figueras the book Celebres aventuras de don Quijote, El Caballero de la Triste Figura. Containing a large number of beautiful illustrations by Brinsley Le Fanu, it was a children’s version of the novel by Miguel de Cervantes. Edited by the Sociedad espanola de tratados religiosos y libros, this publication generated an intense and curious controversy and was promoted by the active Anglican community of the town that had previously translated and adapted an English version, The wonderful adventures of Don Quixote, the knight of the sorrowful countenance, published in London in 1902.

1905 was the tercentenary of the publishing of El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha, by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Following previous celebratory experiences in the late quarter of the 19th century, such as Calderón’s in 1881, a group of Spanish intellectuals proposed a huge and spectacular celebration on Quijote’s tercentenary, a proposal adopted right away by Madrid politicians. In this article we explore the commemoration context from a nationalist, political and cultural point of view. More specifically we study how a historical nationality such as Galicia received and went through that proposal.

Even though the Portuguese version of Don Quijote de la Mancha was published as late as 1794, there is evidence that attests to the knowledge of the novel in Portugal during the entire eighteenth century, especially in the theatrical domain. An example is the anonymous «piquena pessa» entitled As tres Cidras do Amor, ou O Cavalleiro Andante (Lisbon, Off. de Francisco Borges de Sousa, 1793), which stages a singular recreation of the Spanish hidalgo and the hallucinatory effects of the reading of books of chivalry. I undertake a descriptive analysis of the farce As tres Cidras do Amor, focusing on its parody of the fictional universe of knight-errants.

El reciente hallazgo entre los protocolos notariales del Archivo Histórico Provincial de Sevilla de un nuevo e inédito documento cervantino, otorgado en la capital hispalense el 11 de marzo de 1593 y vinculado a la novedosa comisión que Cristóbal de Barros, el primer proveedor general de la Armada de la Guardia de las Indias, encomendara el 21 de febrero de ese mismo año a Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra para el acopio de provisiones, vendría a confirmar un hecho que algunos de los más insignes biógrafos cervantinos siempre habían supuesto pero que nunca pudieron corroborar documentalmente: la estancia personal de Miguel de Cervantes en la villa ducal de Osuna. Cumpliríamos así el sueño de Francisco Rodríguez Marín, el insigne cervantista que dedicó la mayor parte de su vida a la búsqueda de alguna prueba documental que demostrara la presencia real del autor del Quijote en Osuna y justificar así las menciones que de ella, de sus duques y de su vilipendiada Universidad, hiciera Cervantes en su obra literaria más universal.
