Discrimination faced by Roma students leads to high rates of academic failure and school dropout while structural barriers continue to hinder their inclusion in the education system. Educational research shows that the engagement of families contributes to inclusion, academic success, and improvement of the quality of education. However, educational barriers and school segregation practices show the traditional deficiency of effective tools to promote family participation among the Roma population. Understanding the barriers that Roma families find to participate in the educational system involves the examination of complex processes and dynamics that we observe in practice and the role of the different actors in the schooling of Roma students. Schools as Learning Communities provide the democratic scenario to develop the type of relational and collaborative conditions that help both educators and families to participate in successful educational actions linked to school performance. The development of family engagement action plans connected to student achievement and the incorporation of the perspectives of Roma families can successfully increase their opportunities and expectations in the education system.

We present an exploratory study of Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) surveys that focused on analyzing the major dropdowns that sometimes occur in SET scores of those university teachers who teach the same subject for at least two consecutive years. Specifically, the purpose of this study was to identify those SET survey items associated with major dropdowns in teacher evaluations. The sample comprised SET surveys ratings from one Spanish University over five years, for a total of 2,284 different teacher-subject pairs under analysis. The 5% percentile of the differences between the teacher and subject SET ratings in two consecutive years was used as the cut-off point to identify major dropdowns. Frequency tables were used for analysis. The results highlighted SET survey items related to teaching methodology as those most associated with major dropdowns in teachers’ ratings. In particular, the item concerning teachers’ compliance with class schedules showed the highest frequency of occurrence. Beyond the specific scores obtained or the specific items in which major dropdowns may take place, in this study we discuss the importance of incorporating major dropdowns analysis to SET surveys reports in the future.

Early childhood education (ECE) in Ghana has grown from a traditional approach to a more formalised and modernised system of care and education services for young children. As a valued practice, ECE reflects a distributive, regulatory or redistributive policy. The paper analyses Ghana’s ECE policy implementation using McDonnell and Elmore’s framework of five elemental instruments. We supported the analysis with ECE policy documents and research evidence in ECE. Enabling and inhibiting factors affecting ECE were identified and ways were devised to enhance the latter. We established that while ECE has somewhat addressed equity and access issues, concerns exist regarding implementation factors such as quality teacher training and parent involvement for promoting effective programs. The paper recommends the need to evaluate ECE and provide planned and ongoing opportunities to advance the professional development, capacity, and motivation of ECE implementers, especially early childhood teachers.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the top ten causes of death and illness worldwide are caused by occupational risks. In Indonesia itself in 2005, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia stated that as many as 16% of workers had musculoskeletal complaints. The workers every day always do the same work and repeat from day to day, so it is feared that in the long term their health will be disturbed. Quoted from the Central Statistics Agency, the number of industrial sectors in DIY contributed 11.97% to regional income. One of the industrial companies in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) is PT Mega Andalan Kalasan (MAK). This research was conducted at PT Mega Andalan Kalasan (PT MAK) with a descriptive type of research. The potential for ergonomic hazards at PT Mega Andalan Kalasan (PT MAK) is a source of potential losses arising from the concept of work attitude, work station layout. Where this ergonomic hazard has the potential to occur to all workers at PT MAK without any difference in treatment. The potential hazards of ergonomics based on aspects of work attitude are found in the finishing process (fireplace and wheel refinement and small parts).
