The study explores the effect of using new instructional design models in online English literature courses in higher education and explores the effect of their use on students’ performance. This is to assure sustainability in higher education. The study shows the effect of using ADDIE instructional design model along with universal design for learning on students’ performance in online English literature courses in higher education. The study also highlights the major challenges that university professors face when applying the two designs together in online learning. A quantitative approach is applied by distributing a five-part questionnaire to 47 English literature professors from different universities in Jordan who are asked to use both models when planning their online courses. In the last part of the questionnaire, these professors are asked to state the main challenges that they face and are exposed to when applying the two designs together in online learning process. The results of the study reveal that students’ performance increased. There are a few studies that have been conducted to explore new instructional design models to be used in planning online English literature courses in higher education and their effect on students’ performance to assure education sustainability.

This study sought to find out how previous technology use experience, technology self-efficacy, and use behavior relate among themselves towards learning management system (LMS) technology uptake. This is because LMS has been adopted by higher educational institutions during both the COVID-19 lockdown and post-COVID-19 era. Nonetheless, evidence shows lack of training of tutors in utilizing the LMS technology for pedagogical purposes during the emergency remote learning paradigm. Owing to that, most tutors relied on their previous technology use experiences to cultivate a self-belief towards the actual use behavior of leaning management system for their teaching and learning. Consequently, a quantitative approach based on a survey design was adopted, and questionnaire used to collect data from a purposive sample of 267 tutors in a traditional face-to-face distance setting. Results from a partial least squares structural equation modelling approach proved a positive statistically significant effect of both previous technology use experience and technology self-efficacy on LMS use behavior. Additionally, previous technology use experience positively determined technology self-efficacy with the latter having a significant indirect and mediation effect on the former towards LMS use behavior. The results of this study provided insights into the tripartite relationships existing among these three important variables. Based on the findings, recommendations were made to higher educational institutions towards the adoption of LMSs by tutors.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education system is still not fully known, however there are many studies examining the impact of the introduced quarantine restrictions on the circumstances and quality of students’ studies. Universities faced enormous and multifaceted challenges to organise studies during the pandemic period. During the pandemic, new distance teaching/learning platforms were introduced, and more opportunities for distance communication appeared. There is no doubt that COVID-19 has become one of the accelerators of change in the field of information technology accessibility. However, in such conditions, the issues of the quality of university studies become even more relevant. An empirical qualitative study was conducted, the purpose of which was to analyse the position of second-cycle university students on the issue of study quality. 64 master’s students in the field of social sciences from four Lithuanian universities participated in the study conducted in November-December 2021. The verbal data collected were analysed using quantitative content analysis. It was established that the second-cycle university study students evaluate basically positively the quality of online learning. The effective realisation of the study process improves the quality of these studies, while the essential worsening factors are psychophysiological and technical disturbances. The pandemic caused also certain transformations in university studies, created the conditions for a wider application of distance studies, and revealed more opportunities to use electronic resources for teaching and study purposes. Although distance master’s studies have become a novelty and a challenge to a certain extent, this has also highlighted the need for new teaching/learning methods and forms. In addition, successful and smooth continuity of the study process is only possible if there is sufficient flexibility of the participants in the university study process. © 2022 by authors;licensee OJCMT by Bastas, CY.
