The IJHE continues to be the choice of journal for many global researchers. As such, the strength of the IJHE journal is reflected in this issue’s 11 research articles from Israel, China, Saudi Arabia, Africa, America and Thailand. This issue has a strong focus on student approaches to learning, language development and student athletes balance their learning and training schedules. Whilst societies and communities are challenged by global events, the IJHE provides an important platform for the development of theory, the addressing of policy questions, and the dissemination of innovative practice in the field of tertiary education, specifically widening participation and lifelong learning.

Students’ prior math skills are a strong indicator of potential for success in introductory statistics courses regardless of the emphasis on mathematical ability necessary for the course. Thus, many undergraduate instructors utilize some form of math skills assessment as a review for students or for students to identify weak areas in their mathematics preparation. Such evaluations may provide instructors and students with an early indication of the student's chances for success in a course and if additional assistance is required. This study illustrated the efficacy and importance of a standardized math assessment developed and administered as a university-wide mathematics placement test in student success prediction from several modeling approaches.

This research aimed to create a model for developing ethical leadership for school administrators under the Office of Primary Education Service Area through identifying the model components, examining both the current and the desirable conditions, and determining needs priorities for development. Five key components of ethical leadership for the school administrators are trust, responsibility, respect, citizenship, and fairness. The current conditions were found to be at high levels overall, whereas the desirable condition and needs for development were at the highest level, with the needs priorities listed as follows: (1) fairness, (2) citizenship, (3) responsibility, (4) respect and (5) trust, respectively. The developed model was determined, assessed, and affirmed by seven experts fully qualified in the field as the most suitable, feasible and useful.

The aim of this study was to undertake research on the building of an active learning physical course that can improve the problem-solving ability of college students majoring in physical education. The study applied a quasi-experimental design, and the participants were 60 Chinese college students. The experimental class consisted of 30 students, who were subjected to active learning methods for 8 weeks, totaling 32 class hours, and the control class without intervention consisted of the other 30 students. The Problem Solving Inventory was applied to the pre- and post-tests. The result showed that problem-solving ability of college students majoring in physical education was significantly improved in the experimental class after the treatment.

Sweden is seen as one of the most research-driven and educated countries in the world. Thus, Doctoral education is considered one of Sweden's most important parts of higher education. This position paper reflects upon the process and product of doctoral education in Computer Science and Software Engineering in Sweden. The paper provides an overview of doctoral education in Sweden, followed by a practical demonstration of how supervisors and doctoral students could use constructive alignment to achieve the learning outcomes of doctoral education using learning activities and assessment methods to evaluate the learning activities and, by extension, the learning outcomes.

In this paper I reflect on the use of the futures cone and an expanded futures cone (which draws on queer theory) as a tool for dialogue and planning between the supervisor and the doctoral student. I do so by situating the use of this tool in relation to three supervision typologies;the product-orientated, process-orientated and the doctoral student-orientated approaches.

In recent years, PhD students experience a decrease in quality of doctoral education. Less supervision, cancellation of courses, and lack of research resources are reported as factors having an impact on the quality of supervision. Supervision requires different skills since there are several aspects involved including a shared responsibility at departmental level, the context for supervision within the academy and the power relations, supervision relationships, and the way the assessment is conducted.
