In this exploratory study bordering on corpus linguistics, formulaic language and studies on constrained communication (focusing on translation, interpreting, and L2) we aim to verify whether constrained texts found in the Polish-English component of an intermodal EPTIC corpus differ from native texts in terms of use of adjacent word combinations commonly known as bigrams and whether similar patterns can be found across spoken and written registers. To that end, we fit a Poisson regression model with fixed and random effects. The results show that the translated language variety contributes to the higher number of the most frequent bigram types in both spoken and written registers, and that the number of frequent bigrams in texts gen-erally increases when the speech/source speech is delivered impromptu, but the effect is significant only for the written register. The findings reveal the considerable impact of individual variation on formulaicity as most of the bigram variation within both models is explained by text-specific random variables rather than fixed variables.

This paper studies explicitation and implicitation in translated medical texts using a combination of comparable and parallel corpus methodologies. Previous corpus research in this domain has shown common lexical and syntactic shifts between translated and non-translated texts (Askehave & Zethsen 2000; Jensen & Zethsen 2012), including differences in explicitation rates surrounding Latin-Greek (LG) terms (Jiménez-Crespo & Tercedor 2017). A parallel corpus section was compiled in order to identify whether the observed higher explicitation ratios in English to Spanish translations when compared to similar non-translated texts in this last study are due to (1) cross-linguistic interference or replication of source text structures, or (2) to the translational tendency to explicitate. The results point to a possible combination of both, with 21% of cases of explicitation and no implicitation. Higher explicitation ratios mainly support the interference or cross-linguistic influence hypothesis (Kruger 2018). This study also offers support for the risk aversion hypothesis (Pym 2005, 2015; Kruger 2018; De Sutter & Kruger 2018), as translations only show a tendency to include clearer and more explicit formulations. As well as an alternative approach to audiovisual translation and media accessibility, accessible filmmaking (AFM), the integration of translation and accessibility into the filmmaking process through the collaboration of filmmakers and translators, is a new approach to filmmaking. The aim of this article is to ascertain what filmmakers need (in theory and practice) to become accessible filmmakers. Firstly, the reason for the gap between film and translation/media accessibility is explored and a new translation-oriented notion of film studies is presented. A new concept (the global film) is then introduced to help filmmakers widen their perspective beyond the original version of their films. Examples are provided of pioneering filmmakers who have already considered the global film and applied a similar approach to the AFM model. Finally, the article looks at how the concept of the global film and the AFM model were applied to the feature-length documentary Where Memory Ends.

The aim of this study is to analyse the prosodic features of a corpus of audio descriptions in Spanish to determine the user preferences, both sighted and persons with sight loss. The analysis is contextualised by a thorough review of the guidelines and recommendations on voicing audio description. The corpus analysis is based on 10 audio descriptions produced by Spanish professionals. The audio descriptions are analysed in terms of duration, pitch and amplitude. Then a perception test involving 60 participants (31 persons with sight loss and 29 sighted persons) is carried out, using both male and female voices. This research has provided new knowledge in this field and has shown how preferences correlate with certain prosodic values. The results provide food for thought for service providers when selecting the most suitable voices for audio description.

In this paper we present the results of a research work centered on the museum as a place of access to leisure and culture for everyone, describing some of the main terminological problems associated with the questions dealing with two modalities of accessible translation in museums: audio description and easy reading. Our interpretation of the results will allow us to advance in the search for quality indicators for accessible museum resources, which are the product of a complex process of translation – at once intersemiotic, intralinguistic and/or interlinguistic – of the work of art.

The professional opportunities of students trained in languages are increasingly diversified in the globalized world. This article presents the results of a questionnaire focused on an emerging professional profile in the field of the Spanish language: the expert in the creation, revision and adaptation of easy-to-understand content. This profile is the main focus of interest of the teaching innovation project EASIT (Easy Access for Social Inclusion Training), which aims to describe this new profile to make it more visible and to propose a specific teaching program and training materials for it —until now, there is a poor academic offer for those who want to follow this path of specialization.
