Knowledge and promotion of teacher leadership: An Abu Dhabi exploration 教师领导能力的认知与提升:阿布扎比探索

This research is an exploratory, quantitative examination of the knowledge, understanding and promotion of teacher leadership in a public school in the city of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Within Abu Dhabi education has become a top priority as it attempts, through a massive reform project, to develop a modern, innovative, world-class system which puts students first. Teacher leadership is thought to be one way in which a reform project can be supported and student learning can be improved. The participants in this study were drawn from an Abu Dhabi all-female primary school with both expatriate and Emirati teachers. Though some dissimilarities between the Emirati and expatriate teachers emerged, overall findings indicated that teacher leadership as it pertains to improving classroom practices through professional development was the focus and preference of teachers. Predicting child development knowledge and engagement of Moroccan parents 预测摩洛哥父母的儿童发展知识和参与度

A growing body of empirical evidence points to a child’s earliest years as a critical period for developing the foundation for later learning. Yet neither parents nor public policy in the Middle East and North Africa actively support such development. We developed, tested, and administered a survey to a small number of parents of children aged six years and under in Casablanca, Morocco in 2013 to assess parents’ child development knowledge and how they view their role as teachers of their young children. We used multiple regression models to predict parental knowledge and parental engagement in learning activities with their sons and separately with their daughters. Results indicate that nearly half of parents believe that brain development does not begin until after a child’s first year of life. Consistent with these beliefs, parents report engaging in learning activities with their young children less frequently than Western parents; they also relate that they would be unlikely to enroll their young children in high quality child care programs, even if cost were not a factor. Parents who indicated feeling a high level of individual control over life events were less knowledgeable about child development. Those who believe that God controls life events were both more knowledgeable and reported more engagement in learning activities. Parents who reported turning to professional sources for information on child development were likelier to engage in learning activities. The general view that teaching and learning in the first years are unimportant may help to explain the poor academic performance of Moroccan children later in life relative to those of children from other nations with similar economic status. Education of the public regarding the importance of early-years development could help inform parents and policymakers. Services that might be offered to reinforce this message are discussed.

This study analyzes attitudes of different ethnic identities from ethnic, religious and socio-cultural aspects. The study is also concerned with the diversity of general attitudes of ethnic identities that forms a rich structure with different ethnic groups and different components within boundaries of Turkey. Determining dimensions of shared ethnic, religious and socio-cultural identities and attitudes of these identities particularly from the point of values will provide us with a clearer and comparative picture of preferences of Turkey’s rich mosaic that includes various groups. The study aims to measure with validity and reliability tests attitudes of ethnic groups inhabiting Madin Province. Preparing points of measurement, consulting with experts for content validity, trial practice, conducting validity and reliability tests are the steps followed during the development of the measurement instrument. The first section of the two-part questionnaire form contains information on socio-demographic details of participants, while the second section includes preferences that measures value attitudes of participants with certain values. SPSS 17.0 software has been used to analyze data. Various statistical techniques have been utilized in the research and in the evaluation of the data.

The aim of our paper is to introduce some results concerning a comprehensive and multidisciplinary analysis of the relationship between alcohol consumption, physical activity and health within a population of students of the Littoral Coast (France). This work is part of a wider research called “Universante”, started in 2008. This research includes an observatory to monitor students’ health and aims to promote healthy behaviors in the territory. Our analysis has been carried out on a sample of approximately 3.000 students, both at regional (Nord-Pas de Calais: Universite du Littoral Cote d’Opale and Artois University, University of Lille 2), inter-regional (University of Rouen) and international level (University of Chicoutimi, Canada and University of Balamand, Lebanon). This study is defining a “global health” profile, through the analysis of some usual determinants (biomedical, social, psychological, etc.). In this frame, we identifyed different styles of alcohol consumption in terms of frequency and quantities. Then, we crossed these data with those about the subjects’ physical activities and found whether there was a relation. At the time, our main hypothesis is that physical activity plays a protective role against alcohol consumption. Our secondary hypothesis is that it is possible to identify social indicators that may work as modulators of this phenomenon. In our paper we will focus on the “risky” aspects of alcohol consumption. Namely, we are identifying some “risky groups” that can be associated with specific alcohol consumption styles, and we are analysing the ritual aspect of their behaviour from a sociological perspective. © 2013 European Journal of Research on Education by IASSR.

Risk behaviors related agrochemical use among rubber farmers in Southern of Thailand 泰国南部橡胶农使用农用化学品的风险行为

The study objective was to evaluate the knowledge, beliefs and behaviors regarding agrochemical safety behaviors among farmers among farmers in the Khogyang community, Trang province, Thailand between the period September and December 2012. The principles of Health Belief Model and community participatory approach were applied to develop a comprehensive strategy to reduce agrochemical risk their behavior. 316 farmers from 8 villages in Khogyang community were recruited. The mean scores of the 3 variables (knowledge, belief and behavior) regarding agrochemical safety were measured. The results revealed that knowledge of farmer participants on agrochemical use was observed at low level. The level of overall belief regarding agrochemical safety was observed at moderate level. The mean scores of perceived susceptibility, seriousness, barriers, and benefits of agrochemical safety were 3.85 + 0.74, 3.52 + 0.56, 3.61+0.39 and 3.66+0.96, respectively. Behavior of farmer participants on agrochemical safety was also observed at moderate level. There were positive statistically significant correlations between knowledge and behavior scores; and overall belief and behavior scores (r = 0.336 and 0.621, respectively). In addition, statistically significant predictive variables associated agrochemical safety behavior were knowledge and belief on agrochemical use (Beta = 0.120 and 0. 0.576, respectively). These predictors accounted for 39.80 percents of variance. All predictors were positively related to agrochemical use behavior. The most common of agrochemicals use in the Kogyang community was “Glyphosate”. Health risk behaviors regarding agrochemical use were lack of attention to safety precautions and the use of inappropriate protective gear. The principles of Health Belief Model and community participatory approach were applied to develop a comprehensive strategy to reduce agrochemical risk their behavior. 316 farmers from 8 villages in Khogyang community were recruited. The mean scores of the 3 variables (knowledge, belief and behavior) regarding agrochemical safety were measured. The results revealed that knowledge of farmer participants on agrochemical use was observed at low level. The level of overall belief regarding agrochemical safety was observed at moderate level. The mean scores of perceived susceptibility, seriousness, barriers, and benefits of agrochemical safety were 3.85 + 0.74, 3.52 + 0.56, 3.61+0.39 and 3.66+0.96, respectively. Behavior of farmer participants on agrochemical safety was also observed at moderate level. There were positive statistically significant correlations between knowledge and behavior scores; and overall belief and behavior scores (r = 0.336 and 0.621, respectively). In addition, statistically significant predictive variables associated agrochemical safety behavior were knowledge and belief on agrochemical use (Beta = 0.120 and 0. 0.576, respectively). These predictors accounted for 39.80 percents of variance. All predictors were positively related to agrochemical use behavior. The most common of agrochemicals use in the Kogyang community was “Glyphosate”. Health risk behaviors regarding agrochemical use were lack of attention to safety precautions and the use of inappropriate protective gear. The article is correlated to elements of the mother-goddess figure having been changed by a patriarchal cultural system, which has suppressed the positive features of the mother goddess role by strengthening the Pandora’s Box myth throughout the centuries, and to the more recent gender-based division of labour and elements of the glass ceiling. Primarily in the article, the features of mother-goddesses existing in Greek, Anatolian, and Turkish myths from ancient ages until today are explained by correlating them to role of women in social life. Later on the article, addresses the glass ceiling syndrome which applies to women within a gender-based division of labour under patriarchal (masculine) rule is discussed. In the conclusion, a criticism is made of gender based-division of labour, masculine rule, and the glass ceiling factor. © 2013 European Journal of Research on Education by IASSR.
