The following study’s objective is to attempt a historical approach towards a literary motif: the contemplation of a sleeping beauty provoking the desire of love. Wherefore the climax of the Ruperta and Croriano episode will provide the starting point, inserted into the Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda (III, 16-17), by Miguel de Cervantes, who will be our guide.

The novels written about Spain’s financial crisis of recent years have in common the representation of an urban space that serves as much more than simply a background. In this article, we want to examine two novels, La habitacion oscura by Isaac Rosa and Animales domesticos by Marta Sanz, which portray the crisis and pre-crisis respectively from the perspective of the urban space. Social and economic disintegration mirrors itself in the space of the city or, if we reverse this thought: the space of the city serves as a mirror for the decomposition that is found within the novels. We will thus highlight and delve into three phenomena: the representation of the city as a betrayed arcadia, the collapse of certain spaces and the exclusion that this conveys, and, finally, the city’s underground sphere and its relation to death.

This paper addresses a historical reading of La lluvia amarilla by Julio Llamazares. In particular, it notes how the novel becomes an anti-hegemonic discourse that redeems the individual and collective identity of the Republican side from the triumphant tales about the Spanish Civil War and economic development during the 1960s. It also analyzes the style and structure of the story, emphasizing dialogue established with Llamazares’ poetry.

This paper describes how the journal Insula received the transformation of Spanish poetry during the 60’ decade of the last century. More specifically, the work focuses on the authors who soon would be known as novisimos and on those who later distanced themselves from the culturalism and the experimentalism of the former ones. The work of the novisimos was actually welcome in the pages of the journal. Nevertheless, it lacked the enthusiasm given in those same years -and, above all, from the mid-seventies on- to the poetics of the non- novisimos , a group characterized by the continuity in relation to the poetry of the 50’ decade. If we consider the attitude of its most regular critics, Insula dedicated more space and a better opinion to these latter poets and to those who began publishing their books from the mid-70s, the poetry of experience, neosurrealism, the poetics of silence.

During 1803 and 1804 Antonio Marques y Espejo published in five books Historia de los naufragios , a translation into Spanish of the French book Histoire des naufrages , which its Gallic author, Deperthes, had written several years before. With this collection about sea-related disasters, apart from choosing a very popular topic at that time, Marques tried to include an educational part that, covered with such an interesting layer of thriller and entertainment, should be included in every literary work, in his view. However, according to what can be concluded from the study of some of his annotations, we think that his main wish was to achieve commercial success by selling books, with the consequent economic profit.

Folktales are innumerable and there is a myriad of them in all cultures throughout the world. Several attempts have been made at classifying them by scholars like Antti Aarne, Stith Thompson and Hans-Jorg Uther, considering some of the existing versions, theme criteria and their recurring elements. For years these classifications have served the purpose of reference for finding and carrying out different studies in the field of folktales. However, some have questioned their validity. Vladimir Propp set out another form of classification, one arising from the morphology of the folktale and based on the function of the characters. To compare each different approach here it is presented a case study: the structural and morphological analysis of two folktales classified by Aarne, Thompson and Uther within the category of «tales of magic» and referenced as 311B* and 327C.

Arderique is the title of an anonymous Castilian chivalry book, published in 1517 (Valencia, Juan Vinao). The article focuses on the role played by St. Paulicio, a character whose help is relevant in certain moments of the plot, starting at the birth of the heroine. I study the connections between this fictional Paulicio and some historical characters and vitae of hermit saints, such as St. Paul of Thebes. I also analyze three folkloric motifs that coincide with the signs that reveal Paulicio’s holiness: the lions tracking his corpse, the spontaneous tolling of bells, and the letter grasped by a closed hand. The last two motifs, which appear in the legend of Sancha de Aragon as well, belong to the legend of another hermit saint, Alexis. While the books of chivalry or knightly stories of the sixteenth century hardly accept saints or miracles, in Arderique the miracle determines the action of the protagonists.

The disapproval of the court and praise for the village is a leit motiv in elderly Lope de Vega’s several comedies. There we can see how both spaces have a peculiar meaning, and how they always reflect symbolically the same ideas, established by the tradition: while the court represents envy, deception and power, the village is a symbol of peace, transparency, free love, a locus amoenus . Good examples of it are the palatine comedies Del monte sale quien al monte quema, La boba para los otros y discreta para si, Porfiando vence amor, La mayor virtud de un rey o iSi no vieran las mujeres! We will study their characters, their plots, their verses. We will stop essentially in their dramatic structures to try to figure out why these literary spaces turn into an obsession for the last Lope.

It has not highlighted yet the place of the avant-garde notions and the commitment in the autobiographical writings and literary-critical works of Francisco Ayala, where often the sociologist who was in it warns. The first stage of this author escapes the formula that usually sums up the path of the «young literature»: from the avant-garde to commitment. However, as this paper tries to show, his support to avant-gardist spirit means at the same time that he assumed a commitment with the elites that promoted the modernization and europeanization of Spain. This commitment carried with it an aesthetic program based on the autonomy of art, a budget-length Ayala urging him to separate politics and literature, and to express their differences, paradoxically, with the sartrean notion of engagement .
