The fact that there are persons who show an interest in learning a foreign language shows that the human person is not satisfied with communicating only with members of his linguistic society. It can be said that he feels the urge to cross physical, social and mental barriers in order to establish interpersonal relations for the purpose ofcommunicating and sharing ideas, sentiments, etc. This interaction results in man'spersonal growth and of the knowledge of the world around him, and this will in turnwork towards bringing about the reality of the global village that modern man is insearch of establishing. Journal of Language, Technology and Entrepreneurship in Africa Vol. 1 (1) 2007 pp. 38-54

Impact of Culture on Financial Management in Africa

One of the major challenges of the accounting profession in Africa is the impact ofculture on accounting systems. People from different societies view accounting as an imposed idea from another continent. They also find it culturally imposing and punitive and in most cases the demands of accounting go contrary to the cultural norms in a given society. Perhaps it is the way people perceive and react to the word accounting or the ‘idea of accounting'. It is important to note that every society has its norms and standards of language use in communication. These norms and standards play a significant role in the way messages are coded (worded) by the sender, the way they are transmitted (relaying of the message) and the way the receiver of the message decodes (understands and reacts to the message). Journal of Language, Technology and Entrepreneurship in Africa Vol. 1 (1) 2007 pp. 84-96

Inform, educate and entertain. These three cardinal tenets of journalism are evident both in print and electronic media. In Kenya, for instance, the ever-increasingdemocratic space since the mid-1990s has triggered off an avalanche of FM stations, myriad journals, newspapers and pamphlets. All these media purport to subscribe tothe same mantra of informing, educating and entertaining the public. Journal of Language, Technology and Entrepreneurship in Africa Vol. 1 (1) 2007 pp. 178-190

Providing adequate food for their population has been one of the major challengesfor the five member states of the East African Community (EAC). In various parts ofthese countries, food security is precarious and hundreds of thousands in the regionare dependant on food intervention for their daily food requirement needs. Althoughfood insecurity in the region is often attributed to natural disasters such as recurrentdroughts, inappropriate policies that have failed to address the region's problemswithin the context of an increasingly globalized economy have also contributed tolack of adequate food. Towards a Multilingual learner software for African languages

Kenyan universities, in particular the University of Nairobi, have been for the lastfive or so years been a beehive of research around speech technologies with respect toKenyan languages. In 2004, Dr. Muchemi Gakuru (principal investigator), Dr. FrederickIraki (computational linguist) and Mr. Kamanda Ngugi (Computer scientist) brokenew research ground by producing the first Kiswahili Text-To-Speech computer systemin the world (Mucemi et al. 2004). The software can read any text typed in Kiswahiliand therefore presents myriad advantages to the visually-handicapped, languagelearning and teaching, persons with voice impairment, just to mention a few (Ngugi2004). It is important to note that Text-to-Speech systems for other major worldlanguages (English, French, Chinese, etc.) were already in place. Journal of Language, Technology and Entrepreneurship in Africa Vol. 1 (1) 2007 pp. 144-150

The research team set out on 8 August 2007 to visit Mr. Samson Mathiu's farm atNtharu, Nkueni division, Mikumbune location, South Imenti, Meru district. Samsonis an active environmentalist and expert on indigenous plants. He had been identifiedas a potential resource during the Memorialization & Museums Workshop facilitatedby Prof Karega-Munene and held at USIU in May 2007. As part of its outreach andcollaboration strategy, the SDIC team conducted an extensive two-day research in thearea with the assistance of Samson and his friend Francis Kirimi Inoti. A great deal ofnotes were made and photographs taken on African indigenous trees and crops. Theteam returned to USIU on 10 August 2007. Of great interest to the research team wasthe evidence of the transit situation that exist in our rural areas moving from indigenousto current lifestyles within three generations in the region. According to Ibui (2007),the former were acquired over several generations and allowed the locals to use, manage and conserve wild resources in a sustainable mode. In the teams' observation, society's emphasis on a monetary system has seen a shift in plant value systems. Journal of Language, Technology and Entrepreneurship in Africa Vol. 1 (1) 2007 pp. 119-125

This article presents findings on a comparative analysis of cohesion in academic and newspaper texts on road traffic accidents. Cohesive devices are the surface structurefeatures that link different parts of a text and make it flow logically. They are thenecessary reins that hold the clauses of a text together. Coherence, on the other hand,is the property by which the textual world is relevant, accessible and acceptable to thereader. Thus the text hangs together and makes meaning, as it is easily read andunderstood. Journal of Language, Technology and Entrepreneurship in Africa Vol. 1 (1) 2007 pp. 191-195
