Tourism is one of the most important activities for the international economy, with the highest growth and impact in the world. Notwithstanding, its capacity to contribute to regional development and achieve equitable distribution of benefits has been limited. This research analyses the characteristics of current tourism activity, and governance processes that influence tourism management in the South Coast region of the state of Jalisco, Mexico, where the main offer is 3S‑tourism. The resource exploitation in the area has generated natural disasters, loss of identity, territorial privatisation, and social conflicts among other problems. Governance processes were studied using the Governance Analytical Framework (GAF) as a tool to systematise the social, political, and institutional complexity of the formulation, and implementation of collective decision processes. It was found that there are governmental strategies related to the gover‑ nance of tourism, however, they have not contributed to development in an articulated manner. At the local level, the Stakeholders have been able to adopt governance processes for tourism management. However, governance processes based on government strategies have made inclusive tourism management difficult.

The aim of the article was to analyse the discourse with respect to tourism as enunciated by an online newspaper over the period from 2013 to 2018 for the region of Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco) and Bahía de Banderas (Nayarit) ‑ México. The French approach to discourse analysis was used as a conceptual frame‑ work and technique. Specifically, the discursive and ideological formations were identified from the catego‑ ries: lexical selection, themes, figures, space‑time relationship, inter‑discourses and silences. Methodologi‑ cally, 722 news articles were analysed. The results underline the reproduction of themes and figures of neo‑ liberal inter‑discourse, (re)affirming the political strategies of the national government. There is no conflict with the institutional discourse with an almost total absence of analysis of the impacts of tourism on the social reality of this area.

One of the best‑known places in Buenos Aires is the Obelisk. It is, for that reason, frequently called a “symbol”, “icon” or “monument” of the city, and is one of its main tourist attractions. This paper analyses the Obelisk’s symbolism as a tourist site/sight in three dimensions: as a location that is accessible, centrally located and connected by multiple modes of transportation; as an attractive locale, the epicenter of both local actions (political acts and protests, celebrations of sports victories, commemorations of historical events) as well as global campaigns and initiatives carried out in the country; and as a monument with a meaning that has been historically constructed and is understandable to tourists. This last dimension is explored in detail by applying the theory of social semiosis and carrying out a historical analysis of the discourse associated with obelisks from the times of Ancient Egypt up to 19th‑century Europe and modern Latin America.

The following analysis of bicycle tourism offers the Caldo de Caña sugarcane mead route as a way to bring tourism and valorisation of traditional culture to the rural area of São Bernardo, Maranhão. It starts with an exploratory -descriptive and interdisciplinary approach, articulating the concepts of tourism and landscape in rural areas. A survey of the attractions existing on the Caldo de Caña bike route was carried out, with the challenges and opportunities for structuring a tourist product discussed. The study points to the need to include the residents of the São Raimundo village in the expanding tourism dynamics, through strategies of mobilization and articulation with public and private initiatives, so that the tourist activity adds value to the rural environment and translates itself into better living standards and an enhanced local quality of life

This article discusses the phenomenon of urban exploration, urbex, and its relationship with industrial tourism. This activity connects practitioners with the past and with other forms of production sometimes lost through the exploration of industrial heritage. The objective of the study is to analyse the connection between the urbex and tourism from an anthropological perspective. Ethnographics allowed us to contact with groups of urbexers, using virtual ethnography. The results of the research show that this practice, which occurs in the intermediate phase or the abandonment of heritage and is situated between industrial activity and possible future musealisation or final demolition, may have connotations for tourism besides great implications from a cultural point of view.

From the current context of contemporary spiritualities, we wanted to approach an emerging form of tourism known as spiritual or mystical. In order to do this we have focused on the most important European destination in spiritual milieu: Glastonbury. Based on a qualitative methodology, field observa‑ tions and in‑depth interviews, we got closer to both those who organize these kinds of trips and those who are interested in participating on them. The work presented here is based on a specific case: Sandra and Pablo; a couple of Spaniards who, for several years, have accompanied groups of spiritual seekers on their pilgrimage to this magical and sacred place, emphasizing that they are people from outside the tourism sector.

"The study on ecovillages is characterized by the heterogeneity of its sources, being of great interest the delimitation of its theoretical and empirical framework for the knowledge of its structure, functions, and its pioneering perspectives together with its future in the light of international policies in sustainability. A methodological triangulation (structural, comparative and hypothetical‑inductive) is used to develop the approach to the concept, evolution, status, and its role in the context of a green, circular, and sustainable economy. In addition, beekeeping as a fundamental activity within “Red Iberica de Ecoaldeas” (RIE) in Spain was examined through the realization of surveys and shown to be non‑existent. Thus, api‑tourism is considered as an applicable paradigm for the insertion of regenerative activities that are more in line with current demands and a tourism niche which potentially contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)."

"The World Heritage classification emerges as a universal form of validation and dissemination of the heritage value, being a relevant tool for the communication of tourist destinations. The aim of this article is to understand the effects of the World Heritage classification on urban tourist destinations, by confronting the theoretical fundaments of urban tourism and patrimonialization with case studies that seek to evaluate the objectives and results of the World Heritage classification in these places. The different studies reviewed do not allow for a common generalized conclusion but enable to identify some destinations where the World Heritage seal has become an important factor in increasing the notoriety of the tourist destination, and, also, to recognize cities that have several factors that appeal to the visit, where the classification is not proven to be a determining factor in the attraction process for the destination."
