The perceptions and attitudes of residents in tourist destinations have been a relevant object of research almost since the beginning of academic interest in tourism. This paper analyses the implica‑ tions of the temporary suspension of tourism activity (as a consequence of pandemic control strategies) on the attitudes and perceptions about tourism of residents in a mature, mass tourism destination with very low seasonality. A quantitative methodological approach is proposed, based on a survey of 749 residents in Tenerife. It is argued that the experience of an environment without tourists for the first time in decades has facilitated processes of re‑symbolisation of the qualities of the surrounding tourism system, facilitating significant modifications. Likewise, in accordance with the literature, the influence of variables related to the involvement in the tourist system and its valuation by residents, especially the receipt of economic income from this activity, has been detected. Given the high economic dependence on tourism on the island, it was expected that the halt in tourism would lead to a greater recognition of its importance and value. However, the results showed that the opposite was true.

This article aims to find out how the terms tourism and culture have been treated throughout history and when they began to be of interest to the scientific community as a result of the change in the conceptual mentality of the tourism sector in general and the tourist in particular, as well as to understand the evolutionary stage reached. To this end, bibliometric analysis has been carried out, based on a quantitative and systematic review of the literatura, using the Web of Science (WoSCC) database. The software used is Vosviewer and Bibliometrix to generate graphs and maps of relationships and clusters... We can highlight the degree of connection that exists between all the articles published in the period studied (1995 to 2020) due to the number of citations made. This work aims to identify the main trends in research on cultural tourism.

The digital age and the Millennial traveler are drivers of Smart Destinations. This leads traditional destinations to re‑assess strategies, using tools such as the Spanish standard UNE 178501 toward diagnosing their current situation. This is a study of the destination of Cuenca destination in its move toward Smart Tour‑ ism. For the investigation, historical‑logical, induction‑deduction and empirical methods were used with the ap‑ plication of surveys and semi‑structured interviews. The results show that there is an average gap in relation to the selected axes, with weaknesses linked to connectivity in tourist attractions, synaesthesia of the destination, promotion of tourism innovation, and the establishment of a corporate innovation management system in entre‑ preneurship.

This research addresses the study of heritage as a uniting social factor. It is a case study of the Epecuén lagoon, in Carhué, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The article sets out to analyse the contextualised heri‑ tage activation process, based on an evaluation of the natural and cultural heritage resources by analysing the processes, actors and discourses used in tourism. The characteristics of the water in the lagoon were analysed from field work, rainfall analysis and historical reconstruction. We worked from a symbolic and economic appreciation of the natural and cultural heritage. This tourist territory is the product of the con‑ junction of the inherent qualities of the place, and as valued by a society, making it attractive

The general objective of this study is to analyse how the revitalisation of Canela and Passo Fundo railway stations and their use by tourists contribute to the preservation of railway memory and railway heritage. Specifically, it intends to identify what configures stations as heritage; to understand the role of tourism in the use and preservation of revitalised spaces and to understand how revitalisation contributes to the maintenance of railway memory. Using a comparative‑descriptive method, the study analyses the two stations from three analytical perspectives: the attribution of use and utilisation of spaces, legibility and railway memory. The revitalisation thanks to tourism provided a greater use of spaces, with increased traf‑ fic and flows. Tourism does not invalidate the heritage character of the stations, but rather reinforces it by allowing people to have contact with these places through public use.

Cosmopolitanism is considered to be a way of life associated with travellers who are able to reach out to other societies. This approach produces greater tolerance, empathy, awareness and global belonging. This allows us to understand the world’s problems (environmental, economic, social) as our own and forces us to reflect on the need to become directly involved. But in order to achieve a cosmopolitan world, it is nec‑ essary to promote mechanisms. In this sense, tourism, which inevitably involves the movement of people, is an important driver of change. Obviously not just any form of tourism, but that which achieves a symbiotic relationship between visitor and host community. This is why alternative tourism should be encouraged as an instrument of cosmopolitanism. The aim then is to reflect on the benefits of developing a cosmopolitan society and how alternative tourism could contribute to this philosophy of life.

This article reflects on indigenous tourism in Brazil from the perspective of empirical studies. This is a bibliographical review of scientific productions that addressed indigenous tourism in Brazil, from 1999 to 2021. The analyzed collection is composed of 36 works. Studies with approximately 35 indigenous peoples were used, and most of the research was dedicated to communities in the North and Northeast regions. The collection was classified into seven central themes, most of which focused on knowing the impacts of tourist activity on the cultural, social, environmental and economic aspects of communities. This was followed by research that analyzed communities’ strategies for appropriating tourism, and how the activity can be a means of resistance and strengthening of identity. Ethnographic research was one of the most used methods, as well as participant observation and interviews. An agenda for future research was proposed.

This article reflects on the growing trend of cultural landscape appreciation and connecting landscapes with their broader heritage surroundings. It focuses on historical trails and their adjacent cultural and natural heritage as a holistic cultural landscape with a particular case from the Costa Brava. The paper links the concepts of natural scenery, identity, authenticity, coastal and cultural heritage, trails, routes and cultural tourism as the basis for understanding cultural landscapes in a heritage tourism context. This paper provides perspectives on how a coastal trail and its surrounding heritage can connect and be experienced as a cultural landscape, which includes architecture, art, literature and archaeology. The findings suggest five themes that connect the historical path with the region’s heritage landscape: the role of tangible and intangible heritage, the development of a heritage discourse, promoting a heritage route, the division of the route into three sections and their connections to tourism, and the acknowledgement of a unique cultural landscape. The totality of the heritage landscape with all its components complements, and is an integral part of, the coastal landscape that appeals to many tourists in the Costa Brava.

This article is focused on gamification and the study of its strategic use in cultural and creative tourism experiences in Catalonia. From a qualitative perspective and based on ten semi‑structured interviews, the objec‑ tive of this research is to analyse the relationships between gamification and tourism from a supply perspective. Results show the importance of gamification in learning and discovering the characteristics of a place, in attract‑ ing and retaining customers, and in encouraging co‑creation of unique experiences that combine offline and online resources. This research provides visibility on a topic as yet scarcely studied within the academic literature, and represents a contribution to the study of gamification and its implications for cultural tourism in Catalonia.

The paper analyses outsourcing in the hotel sector in Egypt. It presents the main levels of outsourcing of the main hotel services or activities. Moreover, it also analyses the main benefits and risks perceived by the surveyed managers of this outsourcing strategy. Data have been collected from 114 hotels in two sun and sand resort cities in Egypt (Sharm el Sheikh and Hurgada). The results indicate that the most outsourced activities are entertainment, transport services, information systems and maintenance with the least outsourced activities as reception, room cleaning, laundry and food and beverage. In terms of perceived benefits, the main benefits relate to the focus on core competencies and helping to cover the urgent needs of the hotel; while the main risks of outsourcing relate to the detrimental impact of outsourcing on the hotel’s resources and capabilities and on the hotel’s performance.
