Granada’s recent repatriation demands. McSweeney raises questions of ethically reconsidering Spain’s nineteenth-century political and economic instability and inability to protect its heritage against a fierce foreign art market. As ethical claims fall short of resolving legal claims, she argues that museums have a role in rethinking curatorial strategies for displaced, contentious objects. Indeed, recent efforts by museums to reorganize the display of their Islamic collections make their case to free objects from unitary modes of seeing and thinking, and instead provide distinct viewing and interpretive frames that cut across cultural spheres, societies, and geographies. In anticipation of the Berlin Museum für Islamische Kunst’s plans to display the cupola, expected in 2026, From Granada to Berlin could not be timelier. How will the museum creatively translate for its visitors (and perhaps virtually for those in Granada) the visual oeuvre and the multiplicity of narratives and recollected stories offered by McSweeney’s stimulating study?

sources bearing the title Hikayat Patani or Sejarah Patani. These texts date from later times, but they differ substantially from other accounts and are essential for reconstructing Patani’s past. Besides that, the authors briefly refer to several sources in East Asian languages as, for example, the relevant entries in Da Ming huidian 大明 會典 and the Ryukyuan collection Lidao bao’an 歷代寶案. The last chapter of the introduction outlines Patani’s historiography. This mostly follows a chronological arrangement. The authors cite a large number of scholarly studies, including important books on Southeast Asia with individual segments on or references to Patani. Alves’ article on Patani and the Portuguese, which comes next, is an excellent survey. It shows that one cannot understand Portuguese activities in and around Patani without considering Pasai, Melaka and other places. Certain individuals, especially from the Gama family, played a key role in this complex arena. Alves also tells us there was strong competition between Melaka and Patani. One element within that matrix was the pepper trade to China. This links to another chapter of Patani’s past: its relations to early Macau. Until today, there is an area on the west side of the Macau peninsula, which bears the name Patane (Shalitou 沙梨頭 in Chinese). Clearly, the first Portuguese going there were in close contact with Patani; this included some of their Chinese partners. One may add, there is an interesting study by Wu Hongqi 吳宏岐, Shikong jiaozhi de shiye: Aomen diqu lishi dili yanjiu 時空交織的視野:澳門地區歷史地理研究 (Beijing, 2014), which provides further details on the Patane region of Macau. From the late sixteenth century onwards, several queens ruled over Patani and the sultanate experienced various changes. Based on many texts, and archaeological evidence, Perret’s article tries to identify the spatial features of Patani’s capital during this era. It also describes local offices and government titles and tries to disentangle biographical issues related to the aforementioned queens. The final parts of the article investigate social aspects. Patani was a cosmopolitan place where one would encounter many foreigners, languages and religions. The relations between men and women is a further theme. Much of what we know on that comes from the Dutch material cited in the appendix. To round off these remarks, one may state that both articles, along with the introduction, offer a detailed panorama of Patani’s internal setting, its external relations, and the relevant documents, many of which appear in the appendices. Finally, the book also contains a useful glossary, a rich bibliography and a reliable index. Thus, the overall impression is very positive. Indeed, one ought to thank the editors for having published such a fine research tool.

Abstract Under the sway of the dominant “waste” theories on the nature of Dunhuang manuscripts, we tend to default to the conclusion that IOL Tib J 3 and 218 contain independent Chinese and Tibetan texts joined in the process of recycling discarded manuscripts. However, this paper demonstrates that the texts from these two manuscripts constitute coherent Vinaya compositions. The three layers of the handwriting of these two manuscripts were not written randomly, but exhibit clear-cut functions: while the larger Tibetan script, which was produced in a previous project, was used to write Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya commentaries, the smaller Tibetan script and the Chinese script were created as parts of the same bilingual project to provide different textual sources on the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya texts. The Chinese and the Tibetan text in the smaller script, proceeding from the high-level bilingualism of Dunhuang Buddhist communities, display a robust thematic affinity in many cases.

Abstract From the late-1200s to the mid-1400s, the river valleys of Central Tibet experienced both droughts and political upheavals. This combination of inclement weather and administrative dysfunction led to a series of famines. Although the famines were noted at the time, they were later forgotten in Tibetan narratives, and this is the first time that they are the subject of historical study. In this article we analyse the historical narratives of famine – found in biographies, histories and poems – and compare them with the region's paleoclimatic records, focusing particularly on changes in temperature and precipitation. We begin by discussing the famines’ climatic and political causes and their relationship to broader South and East Asian climatic- and famine-related events. We then outline the Tibetan religious, societal and government responses to these events. These responses include the community's initial reactions, and the multiple magical and managerial strategies they eventually developed to stave off famines.

Background: Curiosity on toxin-antitoxin modules has increased intensely over recent years as it is ubiquitously present in many bacterial genomes, including pathogens like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Several cellular functions of TA systems have been proposed however, their exact role in cellular physiology remains unresolved.
Methods: This study aims to find out the impact of the mazEF toxin-antitoxin module on biofilm formation, pathogenesis, and antibiotic resistance in an isolated clinical ST239 MRSA strain, by constructing mazE and mazF mutants using CRISPR-cas9 base-editing plasmid (pnCasSA-BEC). Transcriptome analysis (RNA-seq) was performed for the mazE antitoxin mutant in order to identify the differentially regulated genes. The biofilm formation was also assessed for the mutant strains. Antibiogram profiling was carried out for both the generated mutants followed by murine experiment to determine the pathogenicity of the constructed strains.
Results: For the first time our work showed, that MazF promotes cidA mediated cell death and lysis for biofilm formation without playing any significant role in host virulence as suggested by the murine experiment. Interestingly, the susceptibility to oxacillin, daptomycin and vancomycin was reduced significantly by the activated MazF toxin in the mazE mutant strain.
Conclusions: Our study reveals that activated MazF toxin leads to resistance to antibiotics like oxacillin, daptomycin and vancomycin. Therefore, in the future, any potential antibacterial drug can be designed to target MazF toxin against the problematic multi-drug resistant bug.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) afflicts more than one-third of US adults. In venous thromboembolism (VTE), MetS increases the risk of recurrence and severity of the post-pulmonary embolism syndrome, disproportionately affecting persons of color in urban settings. Exercise can positively modulate components of MetS. Our objective was to survey a sample of urban emergency department (ED) patients with MetS on their exercise habits and interest in increasing activity levels and to compare ± VTE patients. This survey study consisted of: (1) International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and (2) Likert scale gauging interest in increasing activity levels. Any adult ED patient with a composite MetS profile was included. We surveyed 247 patients with an average age of 59 years and 57% reported Black race. Only 9% met recommendations for vigorous exercise and 28% for moderate activity, with no significant difference in the 18% with prior VTE. Fifty-seven percent responded positively regarding motivation in increasing activity. This survey presents novel data supporting the need and feasibility of an interventional study examining exercise as an adjuvant therapy in patients with MetS and VTE.
