This paper explores how Nigerian hip hop music, lyrics, and histories illuminate connections and relationalities, intimacies, and articulations, among and across African and African diasporic communities. Drawing on the works of Lisa Lowe, Stuart Hall, Paul Gilroy, Katherine McKittrick, and others, I demonstrate how these intimacies and articulations allow us to reimagine hip hop, focusing not on origins or beginnings (or African American authenticities) but instead as an expressive transnational mode of cultural production. In this way, I discuss the significance of Black politics in popular music and foreground how intimacies and articulation produce new ways of theorizing race.

Electoral Violence in Nigeria: Insights From Off-Cycle Subnational Elections

There is a popular assumption that off-cycle subnational elections should be better governed and more peaceful than general elections. This position is premised on the notion that limited geographical and demographical scope of such elections offers the national electoral body, security agencies and other key actors in electoral governance the opportunities to concentrate resources and energies in a given jurisdiction for maximum efficiencies. These have encouraged advocacy to unbundle the Electoral Management Body, namely the Independent National Electoral Commission by decentralising electoral governance. However, this assumption has not been subjected to adequate academic scrutiny. This study, therefore, examines comparatively, records of violence in off-cycle subnational elections conducted in Edo, Kogi and Ondo States between 2019 and 2020, and those of Nigeria’s 2019 general elections. The study is descriptive by design, with data largely extracted from Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project and analysed using mixed method.

In China, the phenomenon of ‘little fresh meat’ has recently sparked a contentious debate. However, few studies have examined the thematic concepts surrounding the phenomenon of ‘little fresh meat’ in the Chinese English-medium news media. In order to fill this gap, this study used corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis to examine how the ‘little fresh meat’ phenomenon has been represented discursively in Chinese English-language news media and observe which stance the media take on this phenomenon. The findings show that four semantic domains, namely, entertainment, education, personal care, as well as gender and sexuality, are inextricably intertwined with the ‘little fresh meat’ phenomenon. The findings also show that patriarchal discourse is prominent, and resistance discourse is only subordinate in the representations. This paper sheds light on debates surrounding the ‘little fresh meat’ phenomenon and demonstrates state gender governance through China’s state media.

Wives’ stress and depression levels were higher when all household chores and income were placed on her. 42% of the Mbojo tribe’s wives in Penapali village, Bima regency, West Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia, are the main breadwinners for their families. This study used ethnography of communication by examining 10 families. It was found that Pina and Paliti Palinga customs make husbands only receive works from landlords and consider helping their wives to do household chores as a taboo. Enslaving wives has resulted in high rates of domestic violence, neglect of children and wife, abortions, high rates of illiteracy at primary school age, malnutrition in children under five and other cases of poverty.

Clientelism, Brokers Dominance, and Rigged Election: A Process of Authoritarian Democracy in Bangladesh

It is often assumed that power is exerted through patron–client exchanges in Bangladesh. These patron–client relationships are dispersed and multifaceted, kept together by moral closeness and tenderness. The incumbent government of Bangladesh rigged the last 2014 and 2018 national elections through the clientelist process. In Bangladesh, clientelism has become an art form that encompasses a wide variety of illegal electoral strategies and crimes. Brokers have a crucial part to play in this process because they are responsible for controlling patron–client interactions. Even while clientelism is thought of as an investment in public goods for the underprivileged, it has been demonstrating severe democratic degradation causes in countries that are still in the process of creating their democracies. This study explores how clientelism, broker dominance, and particularly the patron–client situation led Bangladesh to transition from a two-party or multiparty democratic state to a one-party dominant state that is flavored with authoritarian democracy. It also demonstrates how this has led to the emergence of a society in which free and fair election is an illusion.

Indigenous art forms like textiles have undergone critical transitions to their current form due to the influence of change in the environment. Studies in recent times have identified new creativity by weavers in the major weaving communities. This study therefore seeks to identify the influence and effects of change on colours, techniques, tools and materials as well as gender roles on strip-woven fabrics in Ghana. Qualitative research coupled with case study approach aided to gather relevant data through interviews and observation from master weavers. It was revealed that politics, formal education, technology and modernity have influenced changes in the production of strip fabrics. Notably, embroidery machines play an important role in creating designs on the finished fabrics for the market.

India is the fifth largest economy and stands third in purchasing power parity, according to a report by International monetary fund. According to the 2011 census, 31.16% of India’s total population lived in cities in 2011. Due to population growth and economic growth, construction is rapidly increasing. This is one of the reasons for expanding land use in urban areas. People are adversely impacted by the mega-development projects the State and government initiated. Large-scale land acquisition has resulted in the displacement of people from their land, forests and homes. India has been experiencing certain challenges in rehabilitating the individuals whose lives were disrupted by the construction of industrial projects, which is the primary motivation for this action. Failure to adequately implement resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R) strategies and plans results in various obstacles for the People and the governments. Even the Supreme Court has noticed that while dealing with rehabilitation and displacement, there is some administrative deficiency on the part of the State. This paper embarks on the study of land acquisition issues in India while dealing with the newly implemented ‘The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013’ and Rule 2014, the idea of eminent domain, and the acquisitions took place historically in India.

Using Lesotho as our case study and a qualitative methodology consisting of semi-structured interviews with journalists from three of the country’s leading newspapers – The Post, News Day and Lesotho Times – the study examined how social media applications are being embraced and changing news production and newsroom cultures in the country. The findings of the study show the pervasiveness of social media applications and their integration into news ecologies in Lesotho. The paper contends that mutations of the sociology of news provide a useful lens for examining how newsrooms are integrating far-reaching new technologies into newsrooms in the global South.

The study aims to challenge the prevalent assumption of technological determinism in the field of mobile diffusion research by utilizing a contextualized approach with quantitative variables. It conducted random effects analysis with the data of 40 sub-Saharan African countries from 2000 to 2017. The study finds that what has been generally accepted, as developed countries’ mobile diffusion factors may not have the same dynamics for the sub-Saharan region due to heterogeneity among countries where collectivistic societal cultures reside in values in the region, and feedback loop features of the mobile diffusion process of the sub-Saharan countries.
