HOW FORMALISATION AND CONNECTEDNESS MODERATE THE EFFECT OF FORESIGHT ON RADICAL INNOVATION: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM EUROPEAN COMPANIES 形式化和连通性如何调节前瞻性对激进创新的影响:来自欧洲公司的经验证据

While strategic foresight is relevant for radical innovation, many companies fail to produce radical innovation despite blown-up foresight units. We take into consideration the extent of formalisation and social connectedness in a firm to consider how they moderate the effect of strategic foresight on a firm’s ability to produce radical innovations. In a multi-industry study among 212 European companies, we find that formalisation and connectedness interact to enhance the effect of strategic foresight on radical innovation. When formalisation and connectedness are both high, they jointly improve a firm’s ability to use strategic foresight to produce radical innovation. When social connectedness is low, high formalisation, however, reduces a firm’s ability to turn foresight action into radical innovation. We discuss these findings relative to the controversial role of formalisation in radical innovation and provide managerial advice based on our findings.

THE CONCEPT OF BUSINESS MODELS–DEVELOPMENT AND RESEARCH PERSPECTIVES 商业模式的概念&发展和研究视角

This research aims to systematically analyse literature reviews on business models to determine which and to what extent specific business model (BM) research topics receive attention. The systematic meta approach allows 23 selected studies to be examined on the basis of their content by comparing their research approach, focus and results, citation success and stated research directions. In this context, 10 key BM research areas could be derived, which can be grouped into four research domains: (1) BM terminology, (2) BM factors, (3) BM outcomes and impacts, and (4) BM concept application and transfer. The systematic and detailed analysis of the research enables the identification of research gaps and the derivation of recommendations for future BM research efforts.

CHARACTERISTICS OF INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS’ GOVERNANCE: AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW 创新生态系统治理特征:综合文献综述

The research aims to systematise governance characteristics of innovation ecosystems (IE) through an integrative literature review from SciELO, Scopus, and WOS since there is little research discussing governance applied to IE. The following categories emerged from the content analysis: governance approach; actors and roles; the relationship among actors; coordination mechanisms; common objective and value cocreation; goals and evaluation. The results show that governance is approached from different theoretical lenses, with the predominance of literature on network governance. There is also an emphasis on the orchestration concept. Furthermore, results suggest that IE governance is related to practices that align actors with roles and responsibilities oriented to common objectives, leading to value creation. The involvement of actors who collaboratively develop trust and capabilities, share knowledge and information, and generate innovations, technologies, and solutions, stands out. These collaborations may be organic and self-organised or deliberate and orchestrated.

TECHNOLOGY PURCHASE, IN-HOUSE R&D, AND PATENTING: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF FIRMS IN HIGH- AND MEDIUM-TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRIES IN INDIA 技术购买、内部研发与专利:基于印度高新技术产业企业的实证分析

This study examines the relationship between technology purchase, in-house R&D, and patenting activities of firms in India’s high- and medium-technology industries. The study is divided into two periods, i.e., 1995–2005 and 2006–2015, based on the pre- and post-product patent amendment 1 act, 2005. We employ a negative binomial model with fixed and random effects to estimate the impact of technology purchase over R&D and patenting activity, respectively. The estimates of the R&D equation suggest a complementary relationship between technology purchase and in-house R&D. However, the estimates of the patents equation suggest a substitute relationship between in-house and technology purchase. Further, we find an inverted U-shaped relationship between in-house R&D, technology purchase, and patenting activities. However, the interaction between in-house R&D and technology purchase positively moderates the nonlinear relationships. Lastly, our estimated result is sensitive to different industries and periods.

THE ROLES OF FORESIGHT IN LEVERAGING THE INNOVATIVENESS OF ORGANISATIONS 远见在利用组织创新方面的作用

Incorporating foresight practices into the innovation process is relevant to enhance the competitiveness of companies in dynamic and complex environments. From a systematic literature review, this paper maps three roles that foresight assumes when associated with innovation and that help leverage the innovativeness of firms: the informational role concerns monitoring weak signals that indicate future developments; the facilitation role concerns using prospective tools that stimulate collective visions of the future; and the strategic influence role deals with recommendations that support decision-making. From these roles, an integrative framework is proposed to explain the relationships among the constructs researched and that can serve as a model to be tested in the future. This study aims to present foresight practices that can leverage the innovativeness of organisations and contribute to the development of the theory that still lacks depth in relation to the impact of foresight on innovation.

Building an alliance portfolio is an important knowledge-sourcing strategy for firms to create exploratory innovation. By proposing a framework of knowledge flow and search flexibility, we examine the effects of a firm’s network position and knowledge composition of the alliance portfolio on the creation of exploratory innovation. Particularly, we explore their interactions that create synergy and offset mutual disadvantages. Using panel data of 142 pharmaceutical companies from 1996 to 2010, we find that central and brokering positions have an inverted U-shape relationship with the creation of exploratory innovation. We also find two combinations of network position and knowledge composition advantageous for increasing exploratory innovation: a central position with partners’ wide scope of new knowledge, and a brokering position with partners’ wide scope of shared knowledge. This study contributes to the literature by identifying interaction effects between social network theory and the knowledge-based view and suggests implications for designing a firm’s alliance strategy.

Exogenous shocks and environmental changes may force small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to change and innovate their business models. However, their readiness and ability to do so could depend on firm-level characteristics. This paper investigates how two firm-level factors—size and age—impact SMEs’ engagement in business model innovation in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Using World Bank Enterprise Survey data covering 2,115 SMEs from 12 countries, this study shows that the age of an SME is negatively associated with business model innovation. The finding also shows that, contrary to the hypothesis posed in this study, the size of an SME impacts business model innovation positively. The study contributes to the understanding of antecedents of business model innovation in times of environmental change and uncertainty.

THE LIMITS TO INTERNATIONAL OPEN INNOVATION WITHIN SMEs: THE ROLE OF DISTANCE 中小企业国际开放创新的局限:距离的作用

This paper examines the limits to adoption of open innovation (OI) within SMEs in an in-ternational context. In-depth interviews were conducted with managers at 40 Canadian SMEs that operate internationally. The results show that these limits are a function of in-ternational distance, which has cultural, institutional, economic, and geographic dimen-sions. We also found that individual factors (international experience, communication, personal values), organisational factors (economic sector, size, international seniority, international entry mode, available resources, dynamic capabilities, organisational culture), and contextual factors (laws and regulations) can increase or decrease the impact of cultural, institutional, economic, or geographic distance. We contribute to the OI literature by describing the limits to OI in an international context. These findings will help managers identify the limits to their use of international OI, as well as the factors that strengthen or mitigate those limits.

Transformational leadership is an important factor affecting organisational performance. Many studies have shown that transformational leadership has positive and significant influence on organisational performance. Based on a literature review and previous work, this study aims to investigate the impact of transformational leadership on organisational performance and to examine whether organisational learning and open innovation is a mediator between their relationships. A quantitative analysis is performed via a questionnaire. The data analysis was conducted thanks to the structural equation modelling method. The research sample consisted of 202 respondents from Tunisian enterprises chosen through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. The findings of this study provide evidence that transformational leadership, organisational learning and open innovation have significant positive relationship influence on organisational performance. The research also demonstrates that there is a significant effect on the role of mediation in organisational learning and open innovation on the relationship between transformational leadership and organisational performance. The study suggests that if organisation principals use the strategies of transformational leadership and organisational learning at the same time, organisational learning was highly effective to achieve open innovation and subsequently a performance within the organisation.

Knowledge embeddedness may exert a crucial role in improving synergetic innovation performance in the knowledge economy era. However, theoretical deduction and empirical investigation on the effects of knowledge embeddedness have not yet reached a consensus. One primary reason caused this result is that the different levels of knowledge embeddedness for synergies have been neglected to examine. To provide evidence to develop strategies for improving synergetic innovation performance based on related knowledge by embedding knowledge, this paper used the 496-questionnaire data to investigate the impacts of knowledge embeddedness on synergetic innovation performance, the mediating effects of knowledge acquisition and knowledge leakage, and the moderating effect of strategic reactiveness. We found that knowledge embeddedness played an inverted U-shaped role in synergetic innovation performance in strategic alliances, whereas it had positive effects on knowledge acquisition and knowledge leakage. Two specific knowledge flow behaviours, knowledge acquisition and knowledge leakage exerted inverted U-shaped impacts on synergetic innovation performance. In addition, they had partial mediating effects between knowledge embeddedness and synergetic innovation performance. Moreover, strategic reactiveness positively moderated the relationship between knowledge embeddedness and synergetic innovation performance. Our results supplemented reliable empirical evidence to promote the development of embeddedness and knowledge management literature.
