Purpose Utilising the upper echelon theory (UET), the purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of dynamic managerial capabilities (i.e., managerial human capital, managerial social capital (MSC), and managerial cognition (MC)) on organisations’ response strategies to disruptive innovation, under the mediating role of unlearning. Design/methodology/approach Following a deductive approach, quantitative methodology and survey strategy, data was collected through an online questionnaire from (491) managers and top executives of PSF operating in Dubai-UAE and analysed using covariance-based structural equation modelling. Findings The findings revealed that dynamic managerial capabilities played mixed role in predicting firms’ response strategies to disruptive innovation. MSC and MC played a significant role with unlearning as a partial mediator, while managerial human capital did not. Practical implications The findings are important to managers, practitioners, and policymakers, shedding light on which dynamic managerial capabilities is of significance if creative economy is being pursued through adaptive response strategies to disruptive innovation.

The factor of time has drawn considerable attention in entrepreneurship research for the past decades. There is widespread agreement among scholars that time plays a significant role in the development of new ventures: research on life cycle theory, timing of activities, and individual time perspectives had a lasting impact on the academic field. However, the broad interpretation of temporality extends the field of research to various disciplines and leads to a strong fragmentation. Therefore, even in recent work, scholars still call for the adoption of a dynamic view in entrepreneurship research and encourage the use of time-conscious methodologies. This paper conducts a systematic literature review to provide an overview on the thematic foci, methods, main findings, sample specifics, and open questions in this area. We perform co-citation analyses to quantify the extent of bibliographic fragmentation and thereby identify potential knowledge and research gaps that need to be addressed by future research.

The objective of this study is to examine the relationships between social capital, learning from innovation failure, and high-growth small business innovation in the context of a collectivist culture. This study employed a quantitative approach. Data were collected from 78 high-growth small businesses and were analysed using the Partial Least Squares (PLS). It was found that there is a strong link between social capital and innovation. We also focus on the importance of learning from innovation failure in relation to social capital and innovation. This study emphasises social capital and learning from innovation failure as sources of innovation through the lenses of a knowledge-based perspective. Little research has been undertaken to examine the relationships between social capital and learning from innovation failure. This study offers this and provides a particular context: high-growth small businesses in a collectivist culture.

In the field of product development, there is an increased focus on product complementarity. This study explores how the elements of multi-homing complementarity in the platform ecosystem (complementarity type, degree of platform complementarity, and degree of complementarity with other products) affect perceived product value. The data comprise 248 samples of smart-home multi-homing products, collected from the Amazon EC platform. The results indicate that prioritizing the degree of platform complementarity can increase the number of reviews, while prioritizing the degree of complementarity with other products can reduce that number. Focusing on unique complementarity can have a negative impact on ratings. Regarding the interaction term, the interaction of unique complementarity and the degree of complementarity with other products increases the number of reviews. Thus, unique complementarity should be included in the product-development process to ensure product quality and enhance sales.

Most companies promote “innovation” as a core value, but this declared value is not implemented in employees’ behaviour. To address this disconnection between “slogan” and “action,” this paper explores the influence of multiple psychological needs on employees’ innovation behaviour from a value-based perspective. By employing fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to explore the synergistic effects of multiple antecedent conditions on employees’ innovation behaviour fully, the study draws the following conclusions. (1) The organisation’s declared innovative values are not necessary to promote high levels of corporate innovation behaviour but must work in tandem with other elements to produce high levels of employee innovation behaviour. (2) The mechanism underlying high levels of employee innovation behaviour can be divided into five configurations, revealing that different organisations of five conditional factors can lead to a variety of paths for promoting employee innovation behaviour.

In this paper, we explore how an educational programme can be designed to support managers in learning systematic innovation practices, contributing to the Innovation Management community. Using the community of practice (CoP) concept, we developed a programme to educate managers in systematic innovation practices, including systematic innovation work, innovation climate, and the creation of innovation teams. Our contribution builds on prior studies on the CoP construct. Using a case study with a mixed-methods design, we have explored the educational experiences of ten managers and the practical outcome of their organisations’ participation in the programme. Based on mixed data, we conclude that the educational programme “Management Education on Systematic Innovation Practices” (MEoSIP) supports managers’ understanding of systematic innovation practices in theory and in practice. It also contributes to practitioners who can support clients in improving innovation-related abilities. Agencies can develop training programmes using CoP for other educational purposes. Further research is proposed.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of knowledge absorptive capacity (KAC) on innovation orientation in business services. An empirical analysis was conducted on two samples (scientific experts and—in the next step, business service companies). The authors applied one-way ANOVA, HSD Tukey’s post hoc tests, and structural equation modelling. Approached from a knowledge-based view, this research has found that the impact of KAC on all six innovation orientation dimensions is significant and positive. This empirical evidence also supports the thesis that KAC impacts the business performance of firms. Managers should raise a company’s competitive advantage by introducing an innovation orientation, which requires a high level of KAC. This study advances the literature on KAC and innovation orientation by confirming the significant impact of KAC on business performance and a firm’s innovation orientation.

DYNAMIC MANAGERIAL CAPABILITIES AND R&D SPENDING: THE ROLE OF CEO FOUNDER STATUS
IF 2.1 Q3 MANAGEMENT Pub Date : 2023-05-04 DOI: 10.1142/s1363919622500748
Tim Heubeck, Reinhard Meckl
Today’s hypercompetitive economy challenges chief executive officers (CEOs) to make complex yet integral investments in research and development (R&D). Although research has widely discussed R&D spending due to its implications for competitive advantage, it omits whether and how managers’ dynamic capabilities materialise in these long-term investment decisions. This study builds on dynamic managerial capability (DMC) theory to argue that strong managerial-level dynamic capabilities increase R&D spending by improving the capacities of CEOs to sense opportunities and threats, seize them, and reconfigure organisational resources. CEO founder status is additionally proposed as a moderator of this relationship, as founder CEOs differ from professional CEOs in their investment behaviour. The results reveal that DMCs only compositely contribute to R&D investments, while the DMC subcomponents–except for managerial social capital—exert no isolated effects. This study also finds that founder CEOs realise higher R&D investments through their DMCs than their professional counterparts.

FROM CONCEPTUALISATION TO INDUSTRIALISATION – UNCOVERING THE INTRINSIC NATURE OF PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT OF NON-ASSEMBLED PRODUCTS
Q3 MANAGEMENT Pub Date : 2023-05-01 DOI: 10.1142/s1363919623500238
THOMAS LAGER, EMILIA LIIRI
Using a survey mode of inquiry, involving informants from 19[Formula: see text]global manufacturing companies in six sectors of the process industries, this study explores the intrinsic nature of product innovation of non-assembled products. Results show that the characteristics of the “transformation-based” production system in the process industries should not only govern the design of the total product innovation work process and the selection and use of related experimental environment but will also influence the design of the forthcoming production system. It is noted that pilot-planting and full-scale production trials are important instruments not only during the product development phase, but also afterward in solving B2B customers’ post-launch production problems. It is concluded that the experimental output from the product development phase of the product innovation work process for non-assembled products is both a new product design and a new foundation for the production process design.

This work aims to reveal the impact of founders’ networking ability on the innovation intensity of new ventures. Additionally, it sheds light on the underpinning mechanism of this nexus by examining the mediating role of firm collaboration network. The empirical analysis is based on an original survey data of 173 new ventures operating in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector in Italy, collected in 2018. Results suggest that higher individual networking ability is not necessarily translated into higher innovation intensity for new ventures. Notwithstanding, the mediation analysis informs that the relationship between founders’ networking ability and the innovation intensity of new ventures is mediated by the firm collaboration network. Implications for both practitioners and academics are also discussed.
