Abstract This study investigates the relationship between local protectionism and performance of multinational corporation (MNC) subsidiaries in China. We integrate overarching theories (i.e., institutional theory and extended resource-based view) to investigate a model for identifying whether local protectionism at the subnational level is beneficial or detrimental for foreign subsidiary operations or functions as a double-edged sword. We also examine whether or not internal organizational capabilities and relational capital with government moderate the effects. On the basis of regression analyses, our empirical findings reveal that the positive or negative effects of subnational protectionism in China depend on performance types. Moreover, performance contribution is considerably moderated by various internal capabilities of MNC subsidiaries. Findings offer valuable and practical implications for MNCs intending to invest in emerging economies.

Abstract Protectionist economies impede the free flow of capital and labor across national and corporate borders, which limits the production, access, and diffusion of knowledge required to create novel solutions. However, further investigation is needed into the knowledge and innovation pathways/mechanisms to stop or at least reduce protectionist trade policies in order to stimulate the innovation ecosystem and develop a diverse workforce. Through a sequential mediation of venture capital and collaborations, our study investigates the relationship between trade openness and workforce diversity by adopting the knowledge-based view and building on the four pillars of the knowledge-based economy. Utilizing archived data, our analysis verified this connection. The theoretical and practical implications are also discussed.

Anywhere in the World? The Internationalization of Small Entrepreneurial Ventures using a Social Media Platform.

This study aimed at investigating the interplay between internationalization and digitalization using a social media platform during the early phases of the internationalization process of new ventures from an emerging economy. The research adopted the longitudinal multiple-case study method of investigation. All the firms that were studied had operated on a social media platform (Instagram) since their inception. Data collection was based on two rounds of in-depth interviews and secondary data. The research used thematic analysis, cross-case comparison and pattern-matching logic. The study contributes to the extant literature by (a) proposing a conceptualization of the interplay between digitalization and internationalization during the early phases of the internationalization trajectory of small new ventures from an emerging economy using a social media platform; (b) detailing the role of the diaspora during the outward internationalization of these ventures and outlining the theoretical implications of this phenomenon; and (c) providing a micro perspective on how entrepreneurs exploit platform resources and face platform-related risks during their enterprise's early domestic and international phases.

Supplementary information: The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s11575-023-00510-8.
