System Dynamics Review.Zagonel AA.2002.

Responding to growing calls for system dynamics (SD) research to engage with structural racism, this article examines the barriers that Black farmers in New York State face and explores values‐based public institutional food procurement (VBFP) as one possible solution for overcoming these barriers. Combining a qualitative data analysis with causal loop diagrams, this analysis reveals that ongoing structural racism generates (1) structural disconnects between Black farmers' and public institutions' supply chains that inhibit their integration; and (2) procurement policies that create new, rather than addressing existing, barriers for Black farmers. VBFP initiatives' potential to support Black farmers is thus dependent upon dismantling structural racism. In addition, this article advances SD supply chain research by examining one effort to align supply chains with social and environmental values and demonstrates how causal loop diagrams, with their emphasis on system structure, reveal why values‐based supply chain efforts in general often struggle. © 2024 System Dynamics Society.

Regardless of insights gained from building and analyzing dynamic models, the only strategies people can act on are those in their heads. The strategies people internalize are related to their perceived capacities to act—the verbs they believe they can do. If we want others to implement model‐informed policies, then we must connect model abstractions with new situated, concrete actions stakeholders can take. We can emphasize opportunities to act with SD representations, navigating levels of abstraction cleanly, identifying flows as verbs, and choosing variable names that signal who is acting. By drawing on social‐science theories as we offer our grammar of accumulations, activities, and relationships in the language of actions accessible to stakeholders, we help connect experiential understandings to richer, dynamic explanations people can internalize and so discover situated steps to implement policies informed by modeling. © 2024 The Author(s).

In pandemic preparedness and response, a Functional Exercise (FX) is used to simulate a situation as close to a real‐life event as possible without the deployment of resources. Participants are drawn from public health emergency operations centres, and work through a scenario script to test possible responses to a novel pathogen outbreak. This paper summarises the role of system dynamics modelling in the design and implementation of a functional exercise, which involved the Dutch and German national public health institutes in March 2023. The findings confirm the value of the system dynamics method in integrating disease and hospital models, and also highlights how well the method aligns with modern software development processes. The paper concludes with a discussion of what worked well, and presents areas for future enhancements of management flight simulators to support functional exercises. © 2024 The Author(s). This article looks at the well‐known shortest independent loop set algorithm, which is used to identify an independent loop set in system dynamics models. It addresses the cases where the algorithm fails to find a complete set due to its limitation to geodetic cycles and introduces a modification that has the potential to identify a complete independent loop set in every case while maintaining the efficiency of the original algorithm. The modified algorithm uses second‐shortest paths to complete the loop set. Special attention is given to the creation of the second‐shortest path matrix required for the modified algorithm, and to the application of the algorithm to a model where the independent loop set created by the shortest independent loop set algorithm was previously shown to be incomplete. © 2024 System Dynamics Society.

Complex decision‐making processes benefit from involving people with different perspectives. We tested the hypothesis that group model building producing causal loop diagrams is a valuable tool to build shared understanding and hear diverse voices, even when project resources (e.g. data, funding, time) are limited. This was tested in two script‐based workshops involving stakeholders in water management issues in Aotearoa‐New Zealand. We collected data on their experience using a quantitative survey and semi‐structured interviews. Analysis shows that group model building met the participants' desire for something different, was found to be a refreshing new process, helped build social cohesion among stakeholders, and improved shared understanding of both the issue and the model they built. While the qualitative outputs were seen as useful, coupling them with quantitative analyses was seen as necessary by some participants, depending on the nature of the issue(s) and decision(s) being made. © 2024 System Dynamics Society.

Reflecting on Zagonel's dichotomy of microworlds and boundary objects

Aldo Zagonel's distinction between “microworld” and “boundary object” approaches to modeling suggests we ask ourselves pointed questions about what we are valuing, under what conditions, as we involve stakeholders with system dynamics representations. Reflecting on developments in both participatory modeling and large system simulations, I propose that Zagonel's dichotomous descriptions lie along a continuum, with room for scholars and practitioners to explore more explicitly the multiple ways we adapt system dynamics methods to the needs and capacities of the stakeholders with whom we are working at that time. Regardless of approach, whether simulation models or causal diagrams, modifiable in the moment or fixed by design, the goal of using system dynamics representations remains focused on fostering intelligent action among the stakeholders facing the problem of focus. © 2024 The Author(s). Regardless of approach, whether simulation models or causal diagrams, modifiable in the moment or fixed by design, the goal of using system dynamics representations remains focused on fostering intelligent action among the stakeholders facing the problem of focus. © 2024 The Author(s). <jats:italic>System Dynamics Review</jats:italic> published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of System Dynamics Society.","PeriodicalId":51500,"journal":{"name":"System Dynamics Review","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2024-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141547067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We introduce and test the System Dynamics Bot, a computer program leveraging a large language model to automate the creation of causal loop diagrams from textual data. To evaluate its performance, we ensembled two distinct databases. The first dataset includes 20 causal loop diagrams and associated texts sourced from the system dynamics literature. The second dataset comprises responses from 30 participants to a vignette, along with causal loop diagrams coded by three system dynamics modelers. The bot uses textual data and successfully identifies approximately 60% of the links between variables and feedback loops in both datasets. This article outlines our approach, provides examples, and presents evaluation results. We discuss encountered challenges and implemented solutions in developing the System Dynamics Bot. The bot can facilitate extracting mental models from textual data and improve model‐building processes. Moreover, the two datasets can serve as a test‐bed for similar programs. © 2024 The Author(s). Saturation is a useful concept for system dynamics, yet it has not been widely explored or integrated into the modeling process. In this article, we describe saturation as a metaphor describing the point at which a conceptual representation of a system meets the study purpose and no longer requires modification. When saturation is reached, additional data about the problem would not offer added information, thus indicating that additional data gathering and analysis would likely be redundant. We discuss two visualization techniques, “saturation curves” and “shared understanding diagrams,” for assessing saturation when conceptualizing with causal loop diagrams and show their application in a case example. Using saturation analysis during a system dynamics research process has many advantages, including: (i) identifying model structures potentially needing revisions, (ii) observing the extent to which evidence supports the current conceptualization, (iii) reflecting extensively, (iv) documenting important modeling decisions, and (v) potentially improving the problem statement. © 2024 The Author(s). The recent advent of artificial intelligence (AI) language tools like ChatGPT has opened up new opportunities in qualitative research. We revisited a previous project on obesity prevention interventions, where we developed a causal loop diagram through in‐depth interview data analysis. Utilizing ChatGPT in our replication process, we compared its results against our original approach. We discuss that ChatGPT contributes to improved efficiency and unbiased data processing; however, it also reveals limitations in context understanding. Our findings suggest that AI language tools currently have great potential to serve as an augmentative tool rather than a replacement for the intricate analytical tasks performed by humans. With ongoing advancements, AI technologies may soon offer more substantial support in enhancing qualitative research capabilities, an area that deserves more investigation. © 2024 The Authors.
