New Sources of the Text of the Life of Saint Pancratius of Tauromenia 陶罗梅尼亚圣潘克拉修斯生活文本的新来源

The article is devoted to establishing the new sources of the text of the Life of St. Pancratius of Tauromenia. As a result of the analysis, several sources of its text were identified such as the novel “Leucippe and Clitophon” by Achilles Tatius (2nd century C. E.), autobiographical poems of St. Gregory of Nazianzus (late 4th century), the “Augustan History” (Historia Augusta, late 4th — early 5th century) and, separately, the writings of ancient historians for the legend of Taurus and Menia. In addition, parallels were found with the Syriac version of the “Acts of St. John” (5th century), which, perhaps, in some cases is closer to the Life than the Greek version of Pseudo-Prochorus. A special attention in the article is paid to the literary techniques and methods that are used by the author during his work with the sources of the Life. The sources considered in this article reveal the same methods described earlier in historiography, which the author of the Life uses when working with texts from other sources. The study carried out led to the conclusion that the author of the Life of St. Pancratius was an outstanding representative of the “dark ages” period of Byzantine literature (middle of the 7th — middle of the 9th centuries) and wrote for a “classically” educated audience or customer.

The Date of a Town’s Foundation as an Argument in the Debates on Its Status: the Case of St Albans 城镇地位之争中的建镇日期:以圣奥尔本斯为例

The article investigates one possible argument in a dispute about the (burghal) status of a medieval settlement typical for seigneurial towns of medieval England. It is the date of the foundation or appearance of the town in question. Having a burghal status implied that the settlement would have certain right sand privileges, that’s whyt owns people usually tried to proveit by different means, while their lord, especially if it was a monastic one, refused to acknowledge it. The temporal factor appeared to be significant in such discussion, considering that if the appearance of the town preceded the foundation of the monastery (that was its seigneur), then it would allow the former to claim the status of a royal town, even if only it the past. This fact also gave the townspeople opportunity to accuse their monastic lord in usurpation of royal powers. In the article, this issue is analyzed on the example of St Albans, a monastic town, situated in the county of Hertfordshire. This town had a very antagonistic relationship with its seigneur – the local abbey. The fact that this monastery possessed an extensive historiographical tradition allows us to determine how the monastic house constructed the history of the monastery and that of its town within the context of their adversarial relationship. It is remarkable that the references to an ancient foundation appeared at a certain point of the struggle between the town and the monastery, in the 14th century, but had already disappeared by the end of the century from the townspeople’s discourse.

Gender Issues in Sweden: Socio-Political and Historiographical Aspects 瑞典的性别问题:社会政治和历史方面

Gender equality in the political, legal, social, economic, and cultural spheres of modern Sweden is highly relevant to society. This issue affects all aspects of the country's life and is one of the most important points for understanding Swedish identity. The most equal opportunities for women and men are primarily manifested at the state and political levels. In the global media space of the last decade, great attention has been paid to the women's hashtag movement #metoo against cases of sexual harassment by men towards women. This phenomenon has had a significant impact on many aspects of life in Sweden. The susceptibility of Swedish society to gender inequality issues has also been influenced by the scientific achievements of humanities research. Scholars have made significant progress in developing gender issues. If the first works on women's topics were empirical studies that described events involving the weaker sex, then, from the second half of the 1970s historians began talking not about gender equality (jämlikhet), but about gender parity (jämställdhet). The emphasis was not on the biological difference between men and women, but on their social inequality. The new interest of scholars in studying the role of the state in different periods of the history of this country became a novelty in gender historiography in Sweden since the 1990s. It is in the field of studying gender issues in the last five decades that Swedish humanities have achieved the greatest success.

The author analyzes information on the first settlement of Italy by the grandchildren of Adam in the unedited Latin work “De origine urbium Italie” dated from 1391. The appearance of the text is due to the transformation of ethnogenetic myths during the Late Middle Ages and, in particular, to the regular attempts of historians to connect the exploration of various Italian regions with activities of the biblical heroes or such mythic persons who are equally correlated with the Greco-Roman tradition and the Bible. From this point of view the key specific feature of “De origine…” is the interest of its anonymous compiler in presenting as old as possible the past of Italy in whole, not of distinct cities or areas.

Charity in Latin America: Tradition and Modernity 拉丁美洲的慈善:传统与现代

The article deals with the historical traditions of charity in Latin America and their relationship with the main organizational forms of modern charity (religious, corporate, private, international). The author examines the main goals of modern Latin American charitable initiatives and the possibilities of the influence of charitable organizations on social changes in the region, and also analyzes the links between the sphere of charity, government institutions and civil societies in Latin American countries. The analysis carried out allows us to conclude that at the present stage, the scale of Latin American charity has grown, despite the difficulties and regional specifics, and the range of social problems it solves has also expanded. However, most of the philanthropic activity remains dispersed and relatively ineffective when it comes to sustainable development and activities aimed at qualitative social change. The existing positive examples in the field of charity cannot yet become widespread practices due to the lack of widespread support for charitable initiatives aimed at reducing social gaps, difficulties in interacting with the public sector and difficulties in coordinating ways to solve social problems in the Latin American region.

Some Remarks on the Latest Binding of the Siya Gospel and the Origin of the Miniature “The Adoration of the Magi” 《斯雅福音书》最新装帧及微缩版《贤士敬拜》的起源刍议

The paper is concerned with the latest binding of the Siya Gospel of 1339 which was renovated in the 18th century. Having been extracted from the Siya Gospel, fol. 0 with the miniature “The Adoration of the Magi” could have been primarily cut to fit in a smaller codex, or to be put into the Siya Gospel without sewing or gluing. It cannot be excluded that the leaf was cut for a usage as a flyleaf in a certain codex. In the middle of 18th century the Siya Gospel obtained its present binding, for which a leaf of parchment with Empress Elisabeth’smonogram was used. It is argued that the leaf could originate from discarded materials of the Heraldmaster Office which, from the 1750s, was actively occupied with the issue of diplomas granting coats of arms and titles to nobles.

Figure A. V. Suvorov has been a reference military leader for more than two centuries in Russian historical memory. His image began to be formed during the life of the general, and by 1799 his name was widely known both in Russia and abroad. Participants in the last military campaign of the field marshal noted in their memoirs his appearance, atypical for traditional idea of a Russian hero, but it was offset by the strength of his character, intelligence and memory of numerous victories that connected him with veterans of not only the Russian, but also the Austrian army. “Great Atlant”: Emperor Ferdinand III (1637—1657) as a German National Hero “伟大的亚特兰蒂斯”:作为德国民族英雄的斐迪南三世皇帝(1637-1657)

The article deals with the appearance of the image of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III as a national hero in German journalism. There are still not many works devoted to Ferdinand III in historiography. The discussion surrounding his reign continues to highlight the weakness of imperial power during the Congress of Westphalia. The traditions of glorification of rulers were acquired in German printed publications of the middle of the 17th century pronounced national connotation. The Peace of Westphalia gave a new impetus to the development of the German national idea. Despite the emperor’s loss of some important prerogatives during the Congress of Westphalia, Ferdinand III turned on the pages of printed matter into a “German hero” who ended the Thirty Years’ War (1618—1648), who recreated the unity of the Empire and became its full head. The emperor is presented in the writings of the era as the defender of the German nation, thanks to whom the Empire was not only able to withstand thirty years of military chaos, but proved its viability and even reached a new peak. Constructing the image of a national hero, the authors addressed both the real political possibilities of the imperial power after the conclusion of the Peace of Westphalia, and the moral arsenal of virtues, which the emperor had. The ideas of his inherent patriotism and his desire to care for the Fatherland constituted the main components of the image of the ideal ruler and national hero and firmly entered the national discourse. During his lifetime, publicists turned Ferdinand III into a symbol of the German nation and laid the foundation for similar writings in subsequent eras.

The article examines the problems of cooperation between Russian and Swedish social scientists on the example of contacts between the Swedish Center for Working Life Studies and the Institute of the International Labor Movement (later ISP RAN). The basis of cooperation between the two organizations was the study of the problems of labor relations, the trade union and labor movement, and economic democracy. The existing scientific contacts made it possible to organize joint conferences and round tables for the exchange of views with the involvement of other Russian academic institutions and relevant Swedish organizations. As an example, the author considers a round table devoted to the problems of conflict and consensus in public relations between the two countries, as well as a conference on the problems of work ethics. The author comes to the conclusion about the benefits of such scientific contacts and expresses regret that they have recently lost their former dynamics.

Russian Red Cross Society and the Balkan Wars 1912—1913: the Test Before the Storm 俄罗斯红十字会与巴尔干战争1912-1913:风暴前的考验

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Russian Red Cross Society (RRCS) was one of the largest national organisations of the international Red Cross movement. In addition to helping victims of various disasters in Russia, medics from the RRCS helped victims of armed conflicts abroad. Following the Russo-Japanese War, serious shortcomings were identified in the Society's activities and major organisational reforms were undertaken to increase the scale and effectiveness of its work. The first humanitarian operation of RRCS outside Russia, after its reorganization, was the sending of numerous medical missions to the theatre of the First Balkan War on September 25, 1912 — 17 May 1913. During the Second Balkan War from 29 June to 29 July 1913, RRCS missions operated on both sides of the front. The increased efficiency of RRCS, the dedication and professionalism of Russian doctors allowed the Society's missions in the warring countries to successfully cope with their tasks, making up for the shortcomings of the local military-medical services to a great extent, providing aid to tens of thousands of the wounded and sick. The Balkan campaign made it possible to introduce post-reform organisational innovations on the eve of the First World War.
