Succession is a major challenge for family businesses. In this sense, the general objective of the research was to describe and analyze elements involved in the preparation of successors. Chapeco, in Santa Catarina, Brazil, was chosen as the location for the study of succession processes in family businesses. A qualitative research perspective of a descriptive nature was adopted in order to perform a multiple case study. Research began with a literature review, followed by a field survey that collected data through interviews, archival research and systematic observation. The main results revealed that the preparation of successors is defined by certain factors: founder's influence, multi-generational socialization, demographics and learning.

The goal of the current text is to highlight the role of the individual in creativity in organisations. This role has been strangely disregarded in recent years, as modern accounts of creativity have been emphasising the idea that creativity is only defined in context. This main stream argues that creativity is a process that essentially occurs within a functional, relational, and organisational context in which workers are inserted. Key authors defending such a position include the likes of Amabile (1996), Csikszentmihalyi (1996), and, more recently, Glăveanu (2010a, 2010b). This is a vision rooted in the psychosocial interactionist perspective, which has also had a considerable impact in other areas in psychology, sociology, management and other social and human sciences. This supremacy, with regards to creativity, has led many to forget the role of the individual person in the creative process and output, removing their responsibility and protagonism for generating and producing ideas. Hence, the current text intends to bring back to discussion the individual bases of creativity, that people can have an existence isolated from external influences, further defending that the concept can and should be defined out of context, rather than in context.

This paper proposes a meta-analysis of antecedents and consequences of materialistic behavior among children and adolescents. We detected 42 studies, selected from five databases, which generated 53 effect sizes involving an aggregate sample of 9,283 children and adolescents. We proposed a theoretical model based on four antecedents, four consequents and three moderating variables. The results showed a direct and significant relation between materialistic behavior by children and adolescents in most of the antecedent and consequent variables. Furthermore, we found that life satisfaction held a negative relation with materialistic behavior. As for the moderating effects, we confirmed that survey location has a significant influence on effect sizes. Regarding the moderating effect of the sample size and country of application, they do not exert influence on the effect size. In addition to its outcomes, this meta-analysis offers a remarkable theoretical contribution, which provides a consistent theoretical review that resulted in the quantitative integration of the main constructs associated with the antecedents and consequents of materialistic behavior in children and adolescents.

This paper aims to analyze three configuration variables of the competitive environment of commercial banks in Brazil: regulation, industry concentration and technology. Semi-structured interviews and a Delphi Panel were conducted with thirteen experts from the banking industry, including executives, managers and academics. Through content analysis, the main results highlighted were: a tendency for maintenance of industry concentration with restricted spaces for small- and medium-sized banks; possible disruptions in the competitive arena due to new technologies and the consolidation of the cell phone as the main catalyst of bank transactions and means of payment. The research supports the theoretical arguments about the ephemerality of strategic groups and contributes to the discussion and choice for coherent indicators to measure competitive advantage in commercial banks.

We examine the extent to which the internationalization of the firm as a whole can be explained by the interdependence across its distinct international trajectories. To do so, we built a qualitative, backward-looking longitudinal case of the internationalization of a Brazilian born-global IT firm by tracing its four international trajectories from the outset. Our results indicate that the internationalization of the firm is the result of four interdependent international trajectories that evolved in four distinct countries. It addition, we highlight the relationships of the firm with international customers as the driving force behind the interdependence across these international trajectories. Based on these findings, we propose that the internationalization process of the firm as a whole is not necessarily the outcome of the sum of independent international trajectories. Rather, there are interdependences across the firm's international trajectories that shape the overall internationalization of the firm.

Belonging to the area of research concerning the relationship between consumers and brands, the objective of this study is to investigate the influence of brand power on consumers’ sense of power and the roles of dependency and trust as mediating and moderating variables, respectively, in this relationship. The first hypothesis states that in the presence of brands with high power, consumers will have the perception of low personal power. For a better understanding of this phenomenon, dependence emerges as a mediating variable. The amount of power refers to the degree of dependence between the parties; i.e., brands with high power generate greater dependence and therefore reduce the sense of personal power by the consumer, which increases the asymmetry of power, this statement is the second hypothesis of the study. Finally, research found that trust is an important variable in reducing asymmetry of power. This finding shows that high levels of confidence in the negative effect of brand power, mediated by dependence on personal power, is less intense compared to a low-trust condition. Three experiments were performed that confirm the proposed hypotheses. This research brings a significant advance in understanding the relationship between consumers and brands, and proposes a new model based on the power approach.

This study aims to present and discuss Gilberto Velho’s concepts, as well as the way his concepts enable deeper theoretical approaches and new perspectives for career studies, aiming at an interdisciplinary view to understand of individual and collective careers. To do so, we review Gilberto Velho’s notions of projects, fields of possibilities, negotiations of reality and metamorphosis as well as career concepts, focusing especially on Everett Hughes’ interactionism. In this sense, we analyze Velho’s and Hughes’ concepts through a dual theoretical discussion of career studies to demonstrate: how the field of possibilities relates to the objective and subjective aspects of a career; how the negotiation of reality and metamorphosis allow us to analyze conflicts and dilemmas that emerge from the individual who moves through different worlds; how the project concept can be linked to the reciprocity between individuals, groups and institutions; and how memory can be used as temporal dynamic concept for the understanding of career. From these conjugations of concepts we propose a new notion of career. Finally, we present a research agenda to broaden, deepen and refine the concepts proposed in this article.

The publication of scientific articles is one of the requirements imposed on Brazilian researchers and contributes decisively to their reputation, mobility and financial benefits. To assess the quality of publications, Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES) created the Qualis system, that classifies journals into eight levels - A1 (highest) to C (lowest) - inferring the quality of the articles from the strata of the journals in which they are published. This article examines the flaws and gaps that represent factors for rejecting articles submitted to management journals, comparing the motives for rejection between journals from different strata. Methodologically, we conducted an empirical study with data obtained by questionnaire from 82 editors of Brazilian management journals. Contrary to expectations, the results do not point to clear differences in the factors that lead to rejection between journals from different strata. This article has contributions and implications for researchers, publishers and regulators. In particular, the thoughtful reader can identify the most frequent problems and gaps and be more prepared to produce better articles for future submissions.

Kashyap, Antia and Frazier (2011) studied the effects of extra contractual incentives and monitoring over franchisee enforcement. Heide, Wathne and Rokkan (2007) found significant interactions among the types of monitoring, damaging opportunism. This paper extends prior discussion of monitoring and incentives over performance, for which we did not find evidence in the literature. We studied an industrial relationship between a store and its shopping center management. The results showed that the dependence on shopping center expertise, monitoring and compliance policy were associated with performance. Second, monitoring interferes in these direct relationships, moderating them. Specifically, the moderating effect decreases or increases store performance. Third, results show these inverted U-shaped associations better explained performance.

The understanding of social challenges and natural resource limitations by enterprises has spurred the creation of a new kind of entrepreneurism that focuses on strategies aligned with sustainable development dimensions. Recently, theoretical studies have highlighted that the creation of value between an enterprise and its stakeholders is a necessary condition for the sustainability of the business. In such a context, this paper aims to analyse how the interrelation between enterprises that meet criteria of sustainable entrepreneurship and their supplier stakeholders influence the creation of values that contribute to sustainable development. For this purpose this paper used a qualitative approach based on multiple case studies that investigated four enterprises and two of their respective suppliers. The results showed that the interrelationships between the studied companies and their supplier stakeholders influence the creation of values that contribute to sustainable development in that mutual interests related to the three dimensions (environmental, social and economic) are considered.
