Eleven trade union leaders, many familiar with basic occupational safety and health, but many not significantly trained in the field, received two weeks of disaster response training. In zoom interviews they told of how their unions responded to such disasters as 9-11, the Covid-19 pandemic, and Hurricanes Sandy, Maria, and Harvey. Unions, as is their historical practice, helped individuals, workplaces, and communities with resilience, but all participants said there needed to be much better at pre-disaster planning, training, and hard work to be able to respond adequately to future events.

The gross revenue indicator contributes to the understanding of the company’s situation, and generating sales revenue forecasts is a strategy that helps the manager in directing the business. This work aims to develop a set of Machine Learning (ML) models to forecast sales in physical retail. Methodology – To carry out this work, a methodology was proposed to create, compare and evaluate ML models. Findings – When analyzing the forecast scenarios, it was observed that Hourly forecasts performed better than Day forecasts. We highlight the LIGHTGBM model, which presented the best scores in the F1-score metric with 82.95%, 79.26% and 76.53% scenario representing one hour, two hours and three hours ahead, respectively. Value – It is expected that the forecast models will help managers to find insights to support the operational decisions of physical retail contributing to carry out actions to optimize companies’ processes.

Knowledge and information are two very important components in society, to the extent that the term "knowledge societies" has been coined (UNESCO 2021). As part of the processes in organizations, knowledge leads to improvements in their development and productivity (Muñoz and Riverola, cited by Flores 2005); therefore, they must adapt to the demands of a competitive and changing international world. Year after year, administration, specifically those areas that comprise it, results in different themes being developed considering administrative practice worldwide. Considering this, an essay is carried out as a result of exploring the research trends in administration with the goal of conducting a comparative analysis between the current research trends in the field of administration published in journals and the holographic cultural model proposed by Dr. Antonio Castañeda Ríos, and in the process, verifying if the holographic cultural model is still relevant or alternatively describing the trends that are not included in the aforementioned model. Journals that compile research from all over the world have been consulted to identify predominant themes, and it was found that current trends in the field of administration agree with the general lines of research set out in the Holographic Cultural Model. Regarding the particularities found, such themes arise as a result of the logical evolution of time and change.

This paper explores the differences of the English textbooks for the fifth graders in China, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka in Asia. Specifically, the fifth graders’ textbooks were analyzed using a readability tool and Correspondence Analysis (hereafter, CA). An analysis of the data suggests that, in terms of readability and content, there were both similarities and differences between the three textbooks. More precisely, regarding readability, the English textbook of China is closer to the level of English textbook of Myanmar, and the level of textbook of Myanmar is higher than the other two textbooks. Also, concerning the content including vocabulary, CA shows that basically the three textbooks are different from each other.

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy have produced increased 5-year survival rate in majority of cancers; however, acute side-effects during treatment and late adverse effects after these therapies remain a major concern of oncologists. To improve further 5-year survival rate and reduce acute and late adverse effects of therapies, a new non-toxic biological approach is needed. Experimental data for such an approach was available for over 25 years. For example, therapeutic doses of antioxidants inhibit the growth of cancer cells and enhances the growth-inhibitory effects of chemotherapeutic agents and x-irradiation on cancer cells but not on normal cells. These exciting observations failed to draw any attention from oncologists, because mechanistic data on therapeutic doses was not available until now. The mechanistic data on preventive doses of antioxidants suggested that they scavenge free radicals. Since one of the mechanisms of action of chemotherapy and radiation therapy on cancer cells is mediated by free radicals, oncologists fear that supplementation with antioxidants may reduce the effectiveness of cancer therapies by neutralizing free radicals. Cancer cells require glucose and glutamine for their survival and proliferation. This review briefly describes the effects of therapeutic doses of antioxidants alone and in combination with chemotherapy and radiation therapy on the growth of neoplastic cells and normal cells. It also presents evidence to show that such doses of antioxidants reduce the uptake and metabolism of glucose and glutamine in cancer cells. We propose that therapeutic doses of multiple antioxidants can selectively kill cancer cells and enhance the growth-inhibitory effects of therapeutic agents on cancer cells without affecting normal cells by inhibiting the uptake and metabolism of glucose and glutamine.

The broad objective of the study was to determine the joint effect of competitive strategies, competitive advantage, ethical values and corporate reputation on performance of accredited universities in Kenya. The corresponding null hypothesis stated that the joint effect of competitive strategies, competitive advantage, ethical values and corporate reputation on performance of accredited universities in Kenya is not significantly different from the independent effects of predictor variables. This study was anchored on Industrial organization theory, Stakeholders’ theory, Resource-based theory and Virtue’s ethics theory. Descriptive cross-sectional survey was used. The population of the study comprised 53 accredited universities. To collect data, semi structured questionnaires were administered online while a few were dropped and picked later. Data was analyzed using regression models. Findings from the test of hypotheses showed that the joint effect of competitive strategies, competitive advantage, ethical values and corporate reputation on performance was significantly different from the independent effects of predictor variables and thus the null hypothesis was rejected. The study outcomes contributed to theory, policy, and management practice where policy makers in higher education and university managers were recommended to establish a policy framework that observes ethical practices; quality programs, reliable training, research and adoption of competitive strategies such as market penetration, strategic alliances, product development focus, differentiation and cost leadership. A single respondent was deemed to introduce bias in choosing responses and was a limitation to the study. However, use of questionnaires reduced subjectivism in responses. For generalizability of results Longitudinal design was suggested for future studies.

This paper studies disaster training work of one of the original grantees of the Worker Training Program of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences: The International Chemical Workers Union Council (ICWUC) and its consortium of unions and national organizations. The consortium developed disaster train-the-trainer curriculum in English and in Spanish, so worker trainers would be poised to do training during, after, and in prevention of disasters. This paper reviews the program and its impact on affected communities – with both a historical perspective and with interviews of 20 of those who were trained to be disaster response trainers. At least half the trainees actively trained at one or more disaster sites provided important information to keep community residents safer and to help them build resilience in their communities. Other trainers have used their knowledge to improve their workplaces during a disaster or to help prevent mold contamination and other post-disaster hazards in underserved neighborhoods.

This study investigated the impact of institutional efficiency on the financial performance of insurance companies in Nigeria covering the period from 2011 to 2022. The study employed an ex-post facto research design, the estimation techniques utilized were feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) on a sample of five insurance companies were taken. The key variables used in the analysis included net profit margin (NPM) as dependent variable and claims processing efficiency (CPE), risk management effectiveness (RME), and regulatory compliance (RC) as independent variables. The findings displayed that claims processing efficiency (β =0.185, p > 0.05) had positive but no significant effect with net profit margin, risk management effectiveness rate (β =105.910, p > 0.05) is positive but not significantly influencing in net profit margin, regulatory compliance also have negative but does not significantly impact net profit margin of the selected insurance companies in Nigeria at 1% level (β =-12.504, p > 0.05). The study thus recommended, among others, that policy maker should encourage insurance companies to adopt measures that enhance institutional efficiency, such as investing in technology, improving risk management practices, and enhancing customer service.

The Bank of Japan has continued monetary expansion to combat deflation for over twenty years. However, in March 2024, the Bank raised the negative policy interest rate that had lasted eight years and two months. From now on, the Bank should cope with huge balance sheet expansion. Although yield curve control (YCC) has been abolished, long-term interest rates will continue to be controlled to some degree since the Bank will continue to purchase long-term government bonds. New purchases of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have been completed, but the main measures of normalization, such as removing ETFs from the huge balance sheet, will not be implemented easily because of increasing risk of stock prices decreasing. Consequently, there will be some possibilities to lead to a rise in long-term interest rates, a strong yen (a decrease in exports), and also to a decline in stock prices. Empirical analyses are conducted to examine the effects of monetary expansion and the results are positive, however, this study emphasizes the importance of the credibility of central banks.
