The reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in metabolic processes can cause severe lesions. The organisms' defense constitutes the antioxidant barrier. Antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) belong to its main constituents. Lithium is widely used in medicine but its administration can cause negative side-effects. Therefore, we investigated Li oral intoxication influence on SOD and GPx activity in serum and tissues of rats in the dependence on time (three-weeks and six-weeks). In serum SOD activity vs. control increased after three weeks and decreased after six, GPx activity vs. control was changed in reverse way--diminished after three weeks and enhanced after six. In tissues the changes were diverse. The most interesting results are: the decrease of both enzymes in the spleen, no changes of SOD in the brain, the enhanced GPx and diminished SOD in the kidney, the increased SOD in the liver vs. control during the whole experiment. In serum, femoral muscle and kidney during all the exposure the increment of one of enzymes was accompanied with the depletion of the other. The obtained outcomes allow to suggest that the lithium exposure resulted in antioxidant barrier disturbances in rats.

The evaluation of inflammatory response in drug-induced maculopapular eruption was the aim of the study. Plasma concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP) and alpha-2 macroglobulin (alpha-2 MG) were measured in 40 patients with maculopapular eruptions using the immunoenzymatic ELISA method in acute stage of disease and after clearing of skin lesions due to effective therapy. In the acute stage of the disease mean plasma levels of the examined proteins were highly significantly elevated (p < 0.001) in comparison with healthy control. Regression of the clinical symptoms was connected with the deep decrease of protein concentrations in the peripheral blood. After treatment the plasma levels of IL-6 and alpha-2 MG were lowered towards the control values (p > 0.05), but CRP despite its deep decrease was still highly significantly elevated (p < 0.001) in comparison with control. The results of this study indicate that in drug-induced maculopapular eruptions the acute phase response can be initiated and that the observed increased activity of the examined proteins lasts longer than the clinical symptoms of the disease.

The aim of the study is to present practical suggestions as to substitutive administration of thyroxine in patients who underwent strumectomy. Hypothyerosis due to strumectomy is an indication for starting treatment with thyroxine. Until thyroid cancer is excluded on the basis of histopathological examinations the patient should not take thyroxine, as there may be a possibility for the need of scinthigraphy of the whole body. Proper management of the patient with hypothyreosis includes informing the patient about the necessity of regular taking the hormone and undergoing regular check-ups.

The present article is the first of a cycle devoted to the scope of problems concerning independence in decision making while performing tasks at a workplace of a practice nurse in ambulatory health care, after the implementation of financial contracts from health services insurance. The objective was to determine changes at nursing workplaces in public and non-public health care after the implementation of health system reform. In order to achieve the assumed goal the method of diagnostic survey was applied. The study technique was a questionnaire form. The study was conducted in 2000, and covered 45 nurses from public and non-public units each, in Białystok and towns within an area of 100 kilometres. The results of the study indicated that the development and variations in the forms of organizing practice nurse services in ambulatory health care are not considerable. An increase in duties at nursing workplaces in ambulatory health care is neither actually connected with expenditures on services, nor with the widening of practice nurse decision area.

The purpose of the study was to determine: a) the incidence of particular symptoms of dysfunctional voiding, b) the incidence of particular urodynamic disorders, and c) urodynamic patterns typical of particular symptoms of dysfunctional voiding in children with recurrent urinary tract infection. The study comprised 282 children with recurrent urinary tract infection. In order to diagnose functional disturbances of the lower urinary tract, such as detrusor instability, detrusor-sphincter dyscoordination, detrusor instability associated with detrusor-sphincter dyscoordination, and functional subvesical obstruction, in all children, urodynamic examination was performed. For each symptom of dysfunctional voiding (nocturnal enuresis, diurnal urinary incontinence, urinary urgency, and voiding postponement syndrome) urodynamic pattern was determined. The study revealed that functional disturbances of the lower urinary tract coexist with positive histories of micturition disturbances. In the studied children, detrusor instability was the most common urodynamic disorder. Nocturnal enuresis, diurnal urinary incontinence and urinary urgency were symptoms of dysfunctional voiding typical of detrusor stability. In children with and without vesico-ureteral reflux, the incidences of particular urodynamic disorders were similar. This seems to suggest that disturbances of the lower urinary tract may be secondary to infection.

The research was conducted in the selected vehicle industry plant. Work conditions were assessed on the assembly line by measuring chemical and physical factors. Exposure to noise in the investigated plant exceeded the values of permissible standards. The pollution on the posts did not exceed the standards except singular concentrations. While assessing the values of chemical factors concentration, no toxicological danger was revealed in the investigated population. The work conditions of the investigated plant did not create the danger of professional diseases.

The aim of this study was to assess the bone mineral content of the mandible and spine in rats with estrogen deficiency after ovariectomy. Female rats were divided into the following groups: CL--control, SH--sham-operated, OV--after ovariectomy, OVH--after ovariectomy receiving 17beta-estradiol in three different doses (1.25, 12.5, 125 microg) during seven weeks. After the experiment densitometric examinations of the mandible and spine were made using DEXA method and there was measured bone mineral content (BMC). The results of the examination indicate that estrogen deficiency after ovariectomy leads to decreasing of BMC index of the examined bones, and densitometric examinations allow to carefully evaluate changes in the mineral part of the examined bones.

The aim of the research was histological assessment of the influence of MK-801 (NMDA receptor antagonist) and dexamethasone on the kidney. The experiment was carried out on adult Albino-Swiss mouse males. MK-801 was administered in the dose of 0.3 mg/kg/24 h for 8 days, dexamethasone--in the toxic dose of 120 mg/kg/24 h. Kidney slices stained with hematoxylin and eosin and with PAS method were examined with light microscope. The performed experiments revealed that MK-801 causes morphological changes in the shape of slight narrowing of the urinary spaces in renal corpuscles and narrowing of the lumen of the proximal convoluted tubules and dexamethasone administered in toxic doses causes dilatation of these spaces with kidney's hyperemia. MK-801 intensifies morphological changes of the kidney induced by toxic doses of dexamethasone.

Spectrophotometric Intracutaneous Analysis (SIA) is a fast, non-invasive and completely safe method of pigmented skin lesions differentiation with distinct advantages over clinical and dermatoscopic diagnosis of melanoma. It is easy to perform and allows to examine the skin lesions with great accuracy and in a highly objective manner. The sensitivity of the method reaches the value of 96%. It has also been shown that SIAscopy is the most reliable and reproducible of melanoma non-invasive diagnostic techniques. The device, termed SIAscope operates by emission of harmless radiation ranging from 400 to 950 nm into the skin and next, by a measurement of the reflected light quantity for each wavelengths. It is possible because individual components of the skin vary in their optical properties. They absorb and/or reflect light to a various degree and interact preferentially with particular wavelengths of light. From the spectral measurements SIAscope extracts information regarding location, quantity and distribution of melanin, collagen and haemoglobin (i.e. vascularity) within the layers of the skin. The data are then displayed on the screen as the SIAgraphs, which are graphical representations of digital information. It has been established that melanoma displays a characteristic SIAscopic image. It allows doctors to diagnose the tumor early enough even without much experience.
