The objective of this study is to investigate the prescription pattern of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in association with patients’ age, gender and type of hospital visited (government or private), location of the hospital and doctors’ specialty in major divisions of Bangladesh. The secondary objective of this study was to analyze the current market size, share and growth of PPIs in the antiulcer drug market. A crosssectional survey of drug prescriptions was done at hospitals and clinics (private practices) between April 2021 to June 2021 of 7 divisions in Bangladesh. A total of 386 prescriptions, containing 2354 medicines, from 21 districts/areas of 7 divisions in Bangladesh were reviewed to determine the trend of prescribing PPIs. Market data of PPIs were collected from a secondary source (IQVIA). The data collected from the survey were tabulated, analyzed and graphically presented using Microsoft Office Excel 2016. Collected data were entered into the SPSS19.0 statistical software “R” and analyzed. Prescribed antiulcer drugs included Esomeprazole (70.2%), Rabeprazole (7.8%), Omeprazole (4.7%), Dexlansoprazole (4.4%), Pantoprazole (3.1%), and Lansoprazole (0.3%); and 9.3% of collected prescriptions had no anti-ulcerant. There was no association between gender and PPIs prescribed, nor across the type of hospital visited. Only the regression coefficient relating to the patient's age is statistically significant (β=0.01, p<0.05) in overall drug consumption. Along with nonspecific explanations, there were twelve specific reasons for prescribing antiulcer drug generics where the majority of the cases were attributed to NSAID-induced acidity (36%). The rhizome of Canna indica L. (family: Cannaceae) was extracted in methanol and two doses- 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight of the extract were employed to reveal central and peripheral analgesic, hypoglycemic and antidiarrheal properties in vivo. According to tail immersion technique, both doses significantly rose the time of latent response for 90 minutes compared to control mice group in assessing central analgesia. Acetic acid-induced writhing process demonstrated 37.29% and 64.41% inhibition of mice movement at both doses, respectively which indicated promising and statistically significant peripheral analgesic effect. On the other hand, hypoglycemic and antidiarrheal activities maintained dose and time dependent manner. Moreover, the extract of rhizome displayed statistically significant antidiarrheal activity at 400 mg/kg b.w. dose. Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Journal 25(2): 137-142, 2022 (July)

There is an utmost urgency of having new and advanced diagnostics as well as therapeutic alternatives along with the conventional methods to treat coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). For this purpose, different strategies must be explored for the advancement of testing capacity, developing effective treatments, and developing safe vaccines that provide long-term immunity. Nanotechnology has been found effective against COVID-19 in terms of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. The diameter of SARS-CoV-2 (60–140 nm) is similar to nanoparticles. This is why, synthetic nanoparticles can precisely resemble SARS-CoV-2, and efficiently interact with the viral proteins and counter this virus. Nanotechnology offers benefits by developing efficient and cost-effective diagnosis methods and facilitating the improvement of drug properties through nano-carriers, namely liposomes, micelles, metallic nanoparticles, etc. The bibliometric analysis evaluates scholarly contributions using mathematical and statistical methodologies. In this study, the bibliometric analysis investigated the publication trends of nanoparticles and their application in COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment. We have systematically searched the different search engines and publishers (Scopus, PubMed, and Google scholar) from 2020 to 2021, and various visual maps were generated to show, the most- relevant authors, sources, countries, topics, and keywords by using a software called VOSviewer. The findings indicate the advancement of nanotechnology in the diagnosis and therapy of COVID-19. At last, the bibliometric analysis of nanoparticles for COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment provides a clear view of the future research directions and identifies the potential challenges and opportunities. This may pave the way for new researchers to find the proper subfields in nanoparticle-related research areas for combating the COVID-19. Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Journal 25(2): 199-208, 2022 (July)

Eclipta prostata (E. prostata) L, is a herbal medicinal plant, which is reported to contain phenolics and flavonoids, but very little is known about its bioactive potentials. In this report, we reexamined the phenols and flavonoid content and evaluated different bioactivities of organic soluble fractions from the shoots of E. prostata for the first time. Among the extractives, chloroform soluble fraction (CSF) possessed the highest content of phenols (156.03 ± 0.52 mg gallic acid equivalent /g of dry extract) and flavonoids (67.47 ± 0.56 mg quercetin equivalent /g of dry extract) and exhibited the most potent antioxidant properties in terms of total antioxidant capacity (198.71 ± 0.89 mg ascorbic acid equivalent/g of dry extract) and DPPH free radical scavenging ability (IC50; 17.68 ± 0.32 μg/ml). Similarly, CSF showed the highest cytotoxicity with LC50 values of 16.03±0.23 μg/ml, and thrombolytic activity with 36.06 ± 0.39% clot lysis. A significant correlation was observed between flavonoid content and total antioxidant capacity (r2 = 0.894, p < 0.05), while high correlation was seen between polyphenols and flavonoid content with free radical scavenging, total antioxidant capacity and cytotoxicity (r2 = 0.612 - 0.928). These findings suggest that E. prostata is a precious source of polyphenols having potential bioactivities, which could be utilized for the management of lifestyle diseases. Naproxen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) working as a non-selective cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor to treat inflammation, pain, fever, and various disease conditions. The current study was conducted to determine and compare several in vitro quality parameters, often commercially available 500 mg naproxen brands available in Bangladesh. According to the existing protocols, different physical parameters such as uniformity of weight, hardness, friability, disintegration time and dissolution were determined. A validated UV-visible spectrophotometric approach was used to assess the content uniformity of drug material in the collected brands. All the brands taken for this study complied with the official specifications of physical parameters. These brands contained active ingredients ranging from 91.37% up to 101.18%. On the other hand, two brands (C4 and C8) of naproxen tablets failed to meet the specification of United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), 90-110% of the labeled claim for the 500 mg naproxen tablet. These sub-standard brands possessed only 88.16% and 86.67% naproxen sodium. In conclusion, the current study indicated that eight out of the ten brands complied with quality parameters and can be used correspondingly.
