This paper takes the English reports on the sense of national community in China Daily, the mainstream media of China, from 2018 to 2022 as the research object. Based on conceptual metaphor, this article analyses the types, distribution characteristics and role of metaphors in the reports of “sense of national community”. Study finds out that eight different types of metaphors were used in English news reports, and that the frequency of different metaphor types was very unevenly distributed. There is an inappropriate use of religious metaphor in the report. This study has implications for Chinese mainstream media in delivering a sense of national community, spreading Chinese culture and enhancing national cultural confidence.

Since the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed in 2013, receiving abundantly enthusiastic as well as positive responses within the international community, especially the Arab countries along the Belt and Road, and including the Republic of Sudan in north-eastern Africa. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Sudan 58 years ago, the two countries have achieved a series of achievements in the field of higher education. The mutual visits and exchanges between them are also gradually increasing. With the development of the times and the continuous deepening of bilateral relations, the cooperation and exchanges of higher education between the two countries are facing some new difficulties. The purpose of this article is to analyze these dilemmas and propose the optimized path for the development of Sino-Sudan higher education cooperation under the “Belt and Road” initiative.

As more and more new technologies have been introduced to traditional classrooms in schools, handwriting has been overlooked in the digital age. This paper examines the key roles of handwriting in promoting children’s brain development, increasing creativity, improving academic writing competence, and providing help for children with learning difficulties to address the importance of handwriting. Based on that, the paper concludes that children in primary and secondary education should continue to be taught handwriting in the digital age. It suggests that appropriate methods of handwriting instruction in the new digital age need to be identified.

The Chinese Ministry of Education initiated the implementation of the “National Education Digitalization Strategy Action” in 2022. The digital transformation of education has become a significant strategy in China’s educational reform and development in the new era, which is of great significance for the construction of high school information technology course teaching resources. This paper first introduces the concept and current situation of digital transformation and discusses the classification and existing issues of current high school information technology teaching resources. Next, it analyzes the future development direction and focus of high school information technology course teaching resources, including the development and utilization of digital educational resources, the construction and application of virtual laboratories, the development of personalized educational resources, the optimization and popularization of online education platforms, and the promotion of educational resource sharing and open education. Tertiary education is a major instrument for promoting the socio-economic, political and culture development of any nation. This is so, because a nation’s growth and development are determined by its human resources. Tertiary education provides the much-needed manpower to accelerate the growth and development of the economy. In view of the foregoing, this study examined financing tertiary education in Nigeria: a strategic tool for national development. To achieve this the paper presents a holistic trend of budgetary activities in Nigeria with a particular focus in the allocation to the education sector using times series approach from 2009-2018 and 2019-2023 as well as a comparative analysis on funding of education between Nigeria and the other African countries were examined. The challenges of funding, possible options of financing and implications of financing tertiary institutions were also examined. The study recommends that amongst others that higher institutions funding in Nigeria should not be through government budgetary provision alone, rather, the higher institutions should be innovative in sourcing for funds. They should be more enterprise oriented.

Using Stanford parser as a tool, taking 1840 articles on two topics by 920 English learners of four levels after random selection as the research corpus, this study attempts to explore the development trend of syntactic complexity of learners of different levels and what influence divergent topic can have on it. Results show that multi-level learners generally prefer adverbial clauses (advcl) and complement clauses (ccomp) to relative clauses (acl: recl); adjective modifiers (amod) are the best in distinguishing the level of English learners, which can be used as an important basis for judging the level of L2; in addition, different topics of the same task type have no significant effect on L2 learners’ syntactic complexity. It can be concluded that most syntactic complexity measures at the clause and phrase level show a non-linear development trend. Based upon the findings, implications are provided for English textbook development and English pedagogical practices.
