Pre-pubertal castration in felines is a highly effective strategy for managing stray animal populations, thereby benefiting both public health and animal welfare. It helps prevent unwanted pregnancies, minimizes human-stray animal conflicts, and curtails the spread of diseases transmitted through mating. However, this practice has sparked debates among veterinarians and pet owners due to potential adverse effects. Surgical and anesthetic complications, including hypothermia and hypoglycemia, are concerns during pediatric procedures. There is also a possibility of altered development of secondary sexual characteristics, although these changes typically do not impact the animals' overall well-being. Metabolically, neutered cats tend to gain weight, raising the risk of obesity and diabetes mellitus. Skeletal concerns involve delayed bone closure, yet bone density remains largely unaffected. Lower urinary tract issues, like incontinence or obstruction, may also arise, albeit through complex mechanisms. Despite these concerns, the benefits of pre-pubertal castration in managing overpopulation and reproductive diseases outweigh the risks. With vigilant veterinary care and post-operative management, adverse effects can be mitigated, underscoring the importance of this practice in controlling stray cat populations.

The decomposed Babassu stem is a renewable organic material with physical and chemical properties suitable for the production of countless seedlings. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the use of substrates based on decomposed Babassu stems in the production of Cupuaçu seedlings. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in the municipality of Presidente Juscelino - MA. A completely randomized design was used with 6 treatments containing different proportions of Babassu decomposed stem (BDC). The biometric parameters of the Cupuaçu tree were evaluated. CBD significantly influenced the initial growth of the Cupuaçu tree. Plant height and stem diameter obtained the best results at 44.84% and 63.5% of CBD, respectively. Root length and root volume had the best results at 100% CBD. The plant height/root length ratio had its best performance at 0% CBD. It is concluded that the decomposed Babassu stem promotes the initial development of Cupuaçu seedlings.

Cucumber is a vegetable very cultivated and known in Brazil, used in the preparation of salads and preserves. In Amazonas, cultivation is based on seeds from specialized companies, purchased on the local market. However, family farmers multiply and conserve seeds of traditional varieties. The objective of this work was to characterize a variety of cucumber from Benjamin Constant, Alto Solimões, Amazonas, describing it based on its morphological, phenological and agronomic characteristics. The variety has peculiar phenological and agronomic characteristics, such as a concentrated harvest (45 days) and a short cycle (105 days). The dimensions (20.1 cm x 6.7 cm), the weight (525.8 g) and the taste free of bitterness of the fruits, at the point of horticultural maturity, are outstanding attributes in the variety.

The report describes the care of an equine at the Veterinary Clinics Hospital of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). The diagnosis of verminotic colic was performed by anamnesis, clinical signs, blood tests, feces and the Graham method. Blood analysis showed eosinophilia (2223/µl). Stool parasitological examination detected Strongyloidea and Oxyuris equi eggs. Graham’s method and coproculture showed eggs of Oxyuris equi and the presence of infecting larvae (L3) of Strongylus edentatus, Strongylus vulgaris, Trichonema spp. and Gyalocephalus spp. respectively. The patient received drug therapy, responded to treatment and was discharged after six days.

Plant diseases are responsible for significant reductions in agricultural production. The ability of the plant to express resistance to a given phytopathogen is strongly affected by mineral nutrition. The mechanisms leading to these mineral nutrient-induced changes in disease development are complex and include effects directly on the pathogen, the host and the environment. In the present review, studies on the effect of macro- and micronutrients on plant disease intensity are presented, showing the need for understanding this interaction for the correct establishment of integrated management measures.

The objective of this work was to test different methods to overcome dormancy in seeds of Myracrodruon urundeuva, a species of economic and environmental interest. Seven treatments were tested, plus the control. The parameters analyzed were the percentage and speed of germination and the statistical analysis adopted the completely randomized design and the Tukey test (5%). Conclusions: 1) chemical scarification compared to mechanical scarification is a good option to speed up seed germination; 2) seed immersion was not interesting in breaking dormancy and 3) sulfuric acid and washing in running water (2 hs), for germination speed, are statistically superior to the control.

The aim of this study was to characterize a papaya variety grown in Alto Solimoes, Amazonas, identifying the most important descriptors for recognizing the variety and describing the variety based on its morphological and agronomic characteristics. The study consisted of 30 plants. The qualitative data was described, while the quantitative data was submitted to descriptive statistical analysis. The results showed that the variety has peculiar characteristics, such as purple-medium stem pigmentation, the absence of hermaphrodite flowers and the light orange color of the fruit pulp at the horticultural maturity point. Thus, preserving this variety is essential, considering its local commercial relevance and its potential for future genetic improvement programs.

In Brazil, pork consumption is lower compared to the global consumption. Perspectives of sociocultural origin perpetuate the myths that surround pork, claiming it to be a fatty protein and the transmission of human cysticercosis. The objective was to characterize the profile of pork consumption and knowledge about the taeniasis-cysticercosis complex among students of Veterinary Medicine and Agronomy courses, verifying the possible aspects that interfere with consumption. A total of 137 students were interviewed. Variables such as price, flavor, and cultural aspects were the main reasons for the low consumption of pork by students, in addition to the myth that pork is involved in cases of human cysticercosis, which justifies actions with clarification to the population.

Dogs and cats occupy a place of honor in the family, in constant interaction and contact, and since the Coronavirus Disease - 2019 (COVID-19) is an intensely contagious respiratory disease concomitant with the circulation of fake news about the possibility of pets transmitting the disease to their tutors, generated great concern, culminating in the abandonment and even mistreatment of animals. The objectives of the study were to analyze information from scientific articles/journalistic articles on infection and transmission of coronavirus in animals and from these to humans, and from that to guide tutors on pet care in relation to COVID-19, also opposing, the fake news published. The following descriptors were used: “coronavirus animals”, “SARS-Cov-2 animals”, in English and Portuguese, published from 2020 to 2022. The search index databases were Google Scholar, Scielo, Pubmed and Scopus. The selected articles showed that the evidence is limited regarding the action of animals in the epidemiological chain of COVID-19, and there is not enough scientific evidence that they can be transmitters to people. And even though some animals have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, there are no confirmed cases of transmission between these animal species and humans. Thus, it is believed that these bibliographic findings are relevant, due to the need to increase the knowledge of tutors about COVID-19 in dogs and cats, thus avoiding the spread of false news about the epidemiological role of pets.

Dogs a reservoir hosts for helminth and protozoan species and cohabitation with humans plays a key role in zoonotic transmission. The aim of this study is to report the prevalence of intestinal helminths and protozoa and stablish the principal endoparasites in domestic dogs in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Fecal samples were collected from 1400 dogs during the years 2013-2019 and analyzed at the Helminths Laboratory of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. In total, 316 (22,6%) samples were positive for the least one parasite genus, with rates of 62,4%, 43,8%, 23,8%, 14,6%, 8,8%, 18,3% and 30,8%, respectively for the years 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The positivity rate for monoinfected dogs was 86,4% (273/316) and 13,6% (43/316) for polyparasited dogs, especially Ancylostoma spp. The results reinforce the need to improve intestinal parasite control programs to protect dogs and humans and the need to increase the knowledge of dog tutors on the subject.
