A tunable and configurable photonic microwave bandpass filter with negative coefficient is proposed and demonstrated. Based on all-optical mixing in an intensity modulator and a phase modulator, the filter frequency response is related with the frequency of local RF signal (LO) signal and dc bias applied to the intensity modulator. The free spectral range of filter passband can be tuned conveniently by changing the LO frequency. When 8 GHz LO signal is applied, an equivalent bandpass filter with null-to-null bandwidth of 8.1 GHz is obtained for a 25 km radio-over-fiber link. Meanwhile, by varying the dc bias, the weights and the number of taps can be adjusted to tune the performance of filter. Therefore, a flexible transversal bandpass filter implemented in a radio-over-fiber link is realized along with the tunability and reconfiguration.

A new structure of 3-way power divider which based on the structure of branch line hybrid coupler is proposed. The proposed 3-way power divider is designed using an intentional mismatching between the transmission line impedance and termination impedance. As the result, the reflected waves at through and coupling port transmit to isolation port, and resultantly this produces a 3-way power divider. The design concept is confirmed by the circuit and electromagnetically (EM) simulation results, and the fabricated circuit is illustrated with the measured performances. The predicted and measured S-parameters lead that the proposed circuit is a new 3-way power divider. The measured data agree well with the simulation with the error of less than 2.5%.

A multiple-in multiple-out (MIMO), 5 GHz RF transceiver for wireless HDTV distribution is built with 0.18 mum CMOS technology. The transceiver utilizes a direct up transmitter and low-IF receiver architecture. A dual-quadrature direct up conversion mixer is used that achieved better than 35 dB image rejection without any on chip calibration. The measurement shows 6 dB typical receiver noise figure and better than 33 dB transmitter EVM at -5 dBm output power.

This paper presents a novel class of ultra-wideband (UWB: 3.1~10.6 GHz) bandpass filters formed on coplanar waveguide. Open-/short-circuited multiple-mode resonators (MMR) are constructed with three distinctive sections and their resonant performances are studied towards allocating the first three resonant modes occurring around the lower-end, center and higher-end of the concerned UWB passband. In parallel, the two parallel-coupled lines with short-/open-circuited ends are characterized to excite two coupling peaks below and above the UWB's center (6.85 GHz). These two UWB filters are then analyzed using a simple cascaded transmission-line network and optimized using the Momentum software, theoretically demonstrating a five-pole UWB passband performance. Predicted results are confirmed in experiment and they show the actual 2.8- to 10.2-GHz UWB passband with the insertion loss <1.5 dB and variation in group delay <0.33 ns.

Wireless body area network for sensing and monitoring of vital signs is the one of most rapid growing wireless communication system. A key component of wireless body area network is an antenna. It must meet biocompatible and size- limit requirements. Therefore, antenna for wireless body area network faces numerous RF challenges. We used an antenna with two layers of substrate to cancel the effect of human body on antenna performance. In this paper we present an UWB antenna performance in the free space, on direct contact with human body and way out to reduce the effect of human body on antenna performance without any changes on antenna design.

Future generations of wireless communications are expected to place increasing burdens on the efficiency and linearity of power amplifiers, due to the use of more complex multi-carrier waveforms and OFDM. This has implications for the design of transmitters in portable/mobile devices as well as base stations and access points. This paper will summarize the digital predistortion techniques that can be employed to improve the performance of wireless power amplifiers.

Traditional radio frequency bi-directional amplifiers rely on switches with their associated increase in cost, size and loss to achieve time division duplexing. A switchless bi-directional amplifier is proposed whereby the power amplifier (PA) and low noise amplifier (LNA) are connected directly in an anti-parallel configuration. Experimental results show that there is no gain degradation when compared with the individual power amplifier and low noise amplifier.

This paper presents an alternative, new approach to the design of power divider based on composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH TL), where stopband propagation characteristics are employed. Two theoretical methods, namely, use of Floquet theorem analyzing CRLH TL of infinite length and scattering analyses of CRLH TL of finite length, lead to nearly identical complex modes and characteristics impedances. Complex conjugate terminations are required for achieving maximum reflectionless power transfer for the CRLH TL, such complex termination scheme is applied to the series type power divider design, showing theoretical limit of -3dB is attainable with plusmn13deg phase variation and 0.25 dB magnitude deviation across the entire stopband of the CRLH TL.
