Aim: This study aims to analyze the effect of diabetes and diabetes drugs on the outcome of COVID-19 patients. Material and Methods: All the patients with diabetes hospitalized for COVID-19 between March 15, 2020 and June 15, 2020 at Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine were screened. Outcomes of the patients were compared with patients without diabetes. Results: Among six hundred fourteen patients (59.8% male, n=367) there were 151 patients with diabetes (24.5%). Patients with diabetes were hospitalized longer than patients without (12.1±10.3 vs. 10.2±7.3, p=0.037 in days), had higher intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalization rate (20.5% (n=31) vs. 12.0% (n=56), p=0.016, OR:1.8 (1.1-2.9)) and mortality rate (15.8% (n=24) vs. 7.7% (n=36, p=0.007), OR:2.1(1.2-3.8)). There was no difference in admission to ICU between patients who use metformin, basal insulin or bolus insulin regarding admission to ICU compared to patients who don’t (p= 0.32, p=0.22 and p=0.64, respectively). No patient on sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 treatment was treated in ICU. Death rate didn’t differ between patients regarding their treatment modalities. Conclusion: Patients with diabetes had worse outcomes than non-diabetic patients, and according to our findings and no anti-diabetic drug has a beneficial or harmful effect.

Aim: To investigate the variability of Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and the relationship between CIMT and serum Heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) levels in patients with overt and subclinical hypothyroidism. We also aimed to evaluate the effect of levothyroxine treatment on these markers. Material and Methods: 40 patients with overt hypothyroidism (OH), 40 patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) and 30 healthy individuals as control group were evaluated according to serum lipid and thyroid hormone panels, serum H-FABP levels and CIMT measurements. Serum H-FABP levels and CIMT of the patients in group OH were also evaluated following 6-months levothyroxine replacement treatment. Results: The levels of serum total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and H-FABP in group OH were significantly higher (p<0.05). CIMT in group OH was also significantly higher than other groups (p<0.05). There was an insignificant slight positive correlation between serum H-FABP and CIMT. The values of serum H-FABP levels and CIMT measurements after levothyroxine treatment significantly decreased in comparison with pre-treatment period (p<0.05). Conclusion: The increased CIMT and H-FABP levels in overt hypothyroidism might be used as an indicator in determining subclinical atherosclerosis. Levothyroxine treatment might protect the patients with overt hypothyroidism in terms of cardiovascular risk by decreasing CIMT and serum H-FABP levels.

Aim: This study aimed to determine the out-of-pocket payment costs of the Type 2 Diabetes patients due to and associated with the disease. Material and Methods: This study with a descriptive design qualifies. The sample of the study consisted of the patients diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, who applied to a university hospital. In line with the calculated sample number, the study was performed through the face-to-face interviews made with 180 participants. Results: In terms of out-of-pocket payment costs, individual average cost figures within the two patient groups being service and policlinic, are TL 350.59 for service patients, whereas TL 1046.26 for policlinic patients. The total out-of-pocket cost within both patient groups was calculated as TL 111,309,442. Conclusion: It is seen that the substantial part of the cost for the patients, special footwear and socks, which result from the diseases developing in consequence of complication, such as Diabetic Foot, and which are required to be used. From this aspect, increase of the state's support to the patients with regard to reduction of the out-of-pocket payment costs of the patients, or switching to domestic production for the instruments used, and inducement of the patients in this direction, will play an important role in decreasing the costs.

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine whether there were abnormalities in thyroid hormone levels and anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies in pregnant women with and without gestational diabetes mellitus. Material and Methods: We analyzed the medical records of 107 pregnant women. Clinical data related to maternal age, gestational week, body mass index, thyroid function tests, and anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies, fasting blood glucose tests and HbA1c levels were obtained. The Pearson chi-square test, the Mann-Whitney U test, independent samples t-test, the Spearman correlation coefficient and Logistic regression model were performed. Results: Gestational diabetes mellitus group was significantly older (p=0.001). Body mass index was statistically different between the two groups (p=0.002). There were statistically significant differences in fasting blood glucose and HbA1c between the two groups (p<0.001 and p=0.004, respectively). The frequency of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies was higher in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus, but the result was not statistically significant (p=0.716). Euthyroidism (57.9%) was more prevalent in all patients. While cases of subclinical hypothyroidism were statistically significantly different between gestational diabetes mellitus and non-gestational diabetes mellitus groups (p<0.001), euthyroidism and isolated hypothyroxinemia had no significant differences (p=0.093 and p=0.220, respectively). Our results suggest that pregnant women with subclinical hypothyroidism are 5.5 times more likely to be gestational diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: Subclinical hypothyroidism during pregnancy was detected more frequently in women with gestational diabetes mellitus than in women without gestational diabetes mellitus. Taken together, women with GDM should be performed thyroid tests and anti TPO routinely.

Aim: The aim of the research is to examine the behaviors of healthy children who have a sibling with type 1 diabetes and the affecting factors. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional and analytical research was carried out with the mothers (n=147) and healthy siblings (n=147) of children with of Type 1 diabetes followed in the Pediatric Endocrine Polyclinics of three hospitals. “Identification Form”, “Sibling Problems Questionnaire’’, “Schaeffer Sibling Behavioral Assessment Scale-Sibling Forms and Mother Forms” were used as data collection tools. Analysis of the data; number-percentage distributions, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, Bonferroni and Spearman’s Rho Correlation tests were made using. (p=0.033), educational status (p=0.010, p=0.035) and ability to measure blood sugar (p=0.029) and insulin administration (p=0.012) on their own affected the behaviors of healthy siblings. Conclusion: The behaviours of healthy children who have a Type 1 diabetic sibling change according to their status of having any training on diabetes management and are also affected by a lot of factors.
