Seventy-two dairy practitioners in the state of Wisconsin participated in a telephone survey to determine the prevalence of a seasonal vesicular skin disease of dairy cows. Results of the survey indicated that there was widespread recognition of a skin disease that appears clinically similar to bovine herpes mammillitis but with the following differences: sporadic occurrence, non-infectious pattern of occurrence, almost exclusive predilection for first-calfheifers with severe udder edema, and dry gangrene and sloughing of teats.

This review summarizes research indicating that adverse metabolic conditions, particularly marked periparturient loss of body condition body condition exert acute and latent effects on fertility by negatively influencing follicle development and subsequent luteal function. It is concluded that nutritional management directed to minimizing loss of body condition will result in improved fertility.

In the last few years the dairy industry, including farmers and processors, has been buffeted by volatile prices that have resulted in large part because of declining milk price supports. While this has been a very important issue of immediate concern, numerous nonprice factors have played and continue to play an equally important role in shaping the future of the American dairy industry. Food animal veterinarians who wish to do more than just react to their clients' problems need to become involved in the management of the farm. To do so, they must become information managers. They must be able to extract information from farm record systems. They must also become computer literate and be comfortable with data and numbers. While there will always be a need to look at the individual animal, more and more herd problems will be investigated by examining record systems, not just animals. To do so efficiently, veterinarians must be adept at data management. In addition to information about the specific farm, veterinarians must also understand the general conditions facing agricultural industries in the area.

Blood samples were taken just before slaughter and urine urine samples were taken after slaughter from 67 healthy Italian Friesian cows aged 4-7 years. None of the cows had any clinical or haematological signs of kidney damage, but 46 had macroscopic or histological signs of kidney damage. The remaining 21 were used to calculate serum and urine reference values for urea, creatinine, proteins, N-acetyl-glucosaminidase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, lactate dehydrogenase, alpha-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase.

Marketing is the total activities by which the transfer of goods from seller to buyer is affected. Veterinarians have a wide range of feeling about marketing of veterinary pharmaceuticals as it relates to food animal practice. Some veterinarians embrace pharmaceutical sales as part of their practice and routinely dispense both legend and over-the-counter (OTC) products to their clients. Others attempt to distance themselves from any phase of the marketing process, but if a veterinarian is involved in food animal practice and authorizes the use of legend drugs, they are involved and assume the liability associated with their use. The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act mandates this involvement by requiring legend veterinary drugs be dispensed only by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian in the course of their professional practice.
