Three treatments (oxytetracycline infusions, prostaglandin injections, and no treatment) were applied to Holstein cows with postpartum metritis from which A pyogenes had been isolated from the uterus. Gross involution was not different between groups, but oxytetracycline infusions significantly reduced (P <0. 005) the incidence of A pyogenes infected uteri. Numbers were too small to pass judgement on fertility between groups, but when all groups were combined fertility was definitely reduced.

Somatic cell counts are only one of several diagnostic aids which may be used to detect nonclinical mastitis. Whenever possible, they should be used with other diagnostic tests such as milk cultures or ELISA type tests to increase the confidence of the decisions. All dairymen should routinely employ some method of somatic cell counting within their herd.

The purpose of this article is to broaden our thinking to include another condition likely more costly than any of the above. To date, the problem of inconsistent lactation persistence is little discussed and really hasn't been named yet.
