Consumer demand for safety, good nutrition and especially good taste and texture are primary driving forces for new product development. Today, consumers are motivated to a very high degree for their foods to also deliver good health. This motivation has created an intense focus on fat and therein lies a major opportunity, as well as a challenge to the product developer.

Veterinarians and farm managers are facing challenging and exciting, albeit difficult, circumstances. Both businesses, like essentially all others, are operating in an environment characterized by increasing competitive pressures, faster technological change, and greater pressure to consider societal concerns. In this discussion we discuss six characteristics of businesses succeeding in the next generation.

The longer term financial and economic outlook for agriculture is for modestly lower incomes and somewhat increased financial pressure than has existed during the past few years. Undoubtedly the "tried and true" management strategies to respond to tighter margins such as controlling costs, reducing debt loads (or at least borrowing carefully), increasing efficiency and productivity, and using various marketing strategies to reduce risk and enhance price should be reemphasized in this environment. However, it is also important to focus on longer term strategic issues for successful management of a farm business; that is the focus of this discussion.

Management practices that may contribute to antibiotic residues in dairy calves were surveyed on 42 large-scale dairies in Tulare County, California. The survey covered antibiotic use in cows and calves, colostrum use, feeding of milk from cows treated with antibiotics, treatment personnel, and record keeping.

An instrument for collection and transfer of ruminal fluid that is also suitable for administration of water soluble drugs for use in adult is described. The device consists of an oro-ruminal probe, a suction pump, and a funnel. According to the results obtained by testing the device in 30 cows with rumen fistulas and 106 healthy cows, it is concluded that the instrument is suitable for collection of representative samples of ruminal fluid for diagnostic purposes and also for collection of larger volumes of ruminal fluid for transfer. It is also concluded that the best times for obtaining larger volumes of ruminal fluid are before morning feeding and 3-4 h after food intake.

Na primeira etapa deste estudo descrevem-se a ocorrência da dermatite digital no sul do Brasil, as condições ambientais nas quais tem sido observada e o aspecto macroscópico das lesões. O segundo artigo incluso neste trabalho aborda aspectos comparativos em diferentes lesões da pele digital de bovinos, cujos fragmentos embebidos em parafina foram seccionados e corados com Warthin-Starry, hematoxilina-eosina e, ocasionalmente, Grocott’s methenamine silver. Amostras representativas dessas lesões foram testadas com soros antibacerianos, através do método immunoistoquímico da peroxidase, para identificação específica de bactérias. Os microorganismos observados nas lâminas coradas com prata foram classificados em quatro categorias principais. Enquanto espiroquetas foram os organismos mais prevalentes, outros elementos bacilares e esféricos estiveram também presentes em muitos cortes. Os testes immunoistoquímicos demonstraram que aproximadamente 80, 46 e 41% das amostras de dermatites digitais e interdigitais marcaram positivamente quando coradas com anticorpos policlonais contra Treponema pallidum, Campylobacter jejuni e Fusobacterium necrophorum, respectivamente. Além disso, um organismo ramificado e filamentoso (presumivelmente um actinomiceto) esteve consistentemente presente nas lâminas de amostras de lesões interdigitais leves. A associação destes organismos com as populações microbianas mistas presentes nessas dermatites é indicativa de seu envolvimento na formação das lesões.
