We investigated the effects of the current practice of allowing food and drinks in Japanese libraries. A questionnaire was sent to 1000 libraries, of which 356 public and 329 university libraries responded. Over half the respondent libraries allow food and drinks in the library. They also report an increase in library use based on measurements such as the number of gate counts after they changed the policy regarding food and drinks in the library. Furthermore, most of the responding librarians did not report a noticeable increase in related stains after relaxing the policy and many users gave favorable evaluations for allowing food and drinks in libraries.

We propose an extension of distcloud-fs for achieving a global distributed POSIX file system in intercloud environment. The file system works in intercloud environment, that is, on the top of multiple independent cloud services. The important capability of the intercloud extension is that there is no need for users to take care of infrastructure layer, while the file system stores data into multiple cloud services, transparently and automatically. As the result, cloud users may have diversity about vendors and locations for data platform, as discussed in various intercloud research projects. In this paper, we describe the architecture of the distcloud-fs and its intercloud extension. We also describe design and implementation of the prototype and discuss some typical use cases of the file system with practical demonstrations.

Convention industry produces great economic impact and is rapidly diversifying. Many different stakeholders are concerned in convention industry for the reason that it is an essential factor in promoting inbound tourism in Japan. This study focuses on convention bureaus and discusses the differences between non-experienced and experienced convention bureaus with regards to the regional characteristics that each region has. The questionnaire was conducted at the 24th international Meetings Expo (IME 2014) held on December 9-10, 2014, at the Tokyo International Forum, Japan. Researchers distributed questionnaires directly to the convention bureaus during IME 2014. In method, binary logistic regression was adopted. Logistic binary regression is used for two value response. This model is utilized in the case of a situation where mainly two possible results are expected. The results showed that the experienced tended to have a high awareness of providing local information, while the non-experienced tended to have a high awareness of providing the best service as hospitality in the local area.

We propose the concept and design of a system for visualization of university's Web presence. Using tweets obtained by university names as search keywords, we analyzed the frequency and specificity of terms to propose five categories for those terms. Moreover, we summarized tweets into classifications of tweets on universities. By way of both term analysis and philological analysis, we propose ten aspects to characterize universities, which are used to define university's Web presence for our proposed system.

In this study, an interactive 5E learning cycle-based augmented reality system is proposed for conducting microcosmic Chemistry molecule learning activities. Augmented reality has been widely used for enhancing students' learning motivation. However, numerous studies have indicated that without effective learning strategies for helping students construct solid knowledge, their learning performance might be disappointing. To cope with this problem, an interactive 5E learning cycle approach has been adopted to develop an augmented reality mobile learning system which reinforces students' understanding of the concepts of the microcosmic structure of Chemistry molecule learning unit. In order to evaluate students' learning achievement, self-efficacy and learning behavior patterns when using this approach, an experiment was conducted to examine the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The students' learning behaviors when using the interactive AR tools to learn about microcosmic Chemistry molecule structures and the ways in which they perform the interactive 5E learning cycle-based learning tasks will be recorded. Accordingly, the learning behavioral patterns will be analyzed via lag-sequential analysis and quantitative content analysis.

The present university education system has been designed to make graduate students good problem solvers such that they can contribute to society through the skills acquired in the graduate schools. With focus on developing critical thinking and reasoning to solve local and global problems such programs have gained immense popularity among teachers and professors in schools and universities and termed as "Problem-Based-Learning" (PBL). However, there has been very few programs that encourage students to become better Problem finders. This study is based on our own experience of teaching problem-finding as an important skill for a special graduate program in university education and our findings on its implication on students ability to comprehend real world problems.

To reduce the operational load of virtual-network operation in data centers that contain server virtualization platforms and network switches provided by multiple vendors, it would become the challenge to ease management of configurations which are different among server-virtualization environments. This paper proposes a new data-model translation method to unify data-model among multiple configurations of server-virtualization platforms. As the result of evaluation with 24 virtual machines, data-model translation overhead was less than 10% of the time to acquire virtual-machine configuration, and the network management system took 80.5 s to generate configuration information for the overall system. These results indicate that the proposed method is effective to improve the efficiency of configuration management of virtual networks.

Recommender system is an effective way to help users to obtain the personalized and useful information. However, due to complexity and dynamic, the traditional recommender system cannot work well in mobile environment. In this paper, we propose a restaurant recommender system in mobile environment. This recommender system adopts a user preference model by using the features of user's visited restaurants, and also utilizes the location information of user and restaurants to dynamically generate the recommendation results. Baidu map cloud service is used to implement the proposed recommender system. The result of a case study shows that the proposed restaurant recommender system can effectively utilize user's preference and the location information to recommend the personalized and suitable restaurants for different users.

The literature reveals that the youth unemployment rate is largely increasing in recent years, and learning-application gap is a major problem in current societies. Universities are important places for cultivating professions that assisting students integrating learning and application becomes primary. An adaptive mobile profession-consulting system integrating student capability and interests is developed in this study to assist students connecting what they learn in the universities with the needs in the workplace. With questionnaire survey, 475 senior students in a university are surveyed in this study. The findings show that, in comparison with general career consultation, the use of the adaptive mobile profession-consulting system presents significant effect on assisting students in understanding self-capability and interests, planning future career development, satisfaction with career consultation, and the way of career consultation correspondent with expectation. To have students combine the learning with the application, it is suggested to include the assistance of mobile technology, integrate students' capability and interests, and help students understand the current situations of the workplace to enhance the employability and competitiveness and reinforce the future career development.

In Japan, public libraries have long been managed by local governments. However, with the introduction of the designated administrator system (DAS) in 2003, other organizations including private companies began to take over library management. In this study, we examine the differences between public libraries managed under DAS and those managed directly by local government (LG), with a focus on reference services. We compare the contents of the services provided and the number of reference questions received. The results show that LG libraries tend to answer users' questions directly, whereas DAS libraries tend to develop environments where users can find answers for themselves, such as by providing PCs connected to the Web and by offering classes on information-seeking skills. Our analysis shows that the DAS libraries receive more reference questions than LG libraries.
