Being a part of a large-scale study, the article is devoted to the relationship between three civilizations, America, China, and Russia, at the turn of the XXth and XXIst centuries. The author focuses on civilization as the Other in the construction of civilizational identity. It has been noted that in forming and maintaining civilizational identity the Other turns out to be not only irremovable, but also unavoidable. Moreover, the presence of the Other is a condition for constructing civilizational identity. Besides, it does not matter whether this Other acts as a friend or an enemy. There can be many variants here. Proving this thesis, the author turns to the research of the American philosopher E. Said who argues that the image of the East has been shaped by the West. E. Said calls this image an «Orientalist discourse» constructed and implanted in the minds of other peoples, including eastern peoples, in order to subordinate them to the interests of the West. This identity, attributed to the East which, allegedly, is at a low level of development compared to the West, turned out to be an expression of the West's imperial complex. The «Orientalist discourse» created by the West did not go away with the collapse of empires in the XX century, but was picked up by America. The main purpose of this article is to show that a similar mechanism underlies the construction of Russia's identity. From the point of view of the West, Russia still belongs to the East. Or at least closer to the East than to the West, which is impossible not to be surprised at, because since Peter the Great, Russia has accelerated through all stages of Westernization, establishing itself as a pro-Western civilization. However, the Russian revolution demonstrated that it, among other things, destroyed the image of Russia as a missionary instilling Western attitudes in the minds of eastern peoples, an image created by the West. In the course of the XX century, a world-wide chain reaction of liberating nations, formerly oppressed by the West and now gaining freedom, became possible. The article also raises the question of external and internal factors, particularly national mentality, in shaping identity. The article considers the problem of mentality and, in particular, such a feature of this mentality as messiahship or the belief of the nation in their uniqueness among other nations. On the basis of the opinions of V. Rozanov, the author states that in the world history, there are peoples with inherent and pronounced messiahship and peoples who do not have this complex. So, it is argued that messiahship is inherent in Americans, which of course complicates America's relationship with other civilizations. The article also continues to discuss the means to build the identity of the nation. The author considers art and, in particular, the cinema as such means.

The article offers a discourse of N.A. Nekrasov's artistic worldview from the positions of a cultural, philosophical and anthropological approach to the gender issues. The main task is to identify and study the gender-determined intentions of the universe formed by Nekrasov. The scientific significance of the article is determined both by the integrative culturological algorithm of gender analysis in N.A. Nekrasov's artistic universe and by the established (and compensated) paradox: the gender-oriented discourse of N.A. Nekrasov's heritage, who is known in the Russian mass consciousness as a singer of «miserable woman's life», has so far been realized only occasionally and almost without considering the masculine specificity. The article presents the results of cultural, philosophical and anthropological analysis, systematizes various manifestations of femininity and masculinity in Nekrasov's texts and describes the experience of studying both the names and the composition and organization of the character system. «Overcrowded» and colorful Nekrasov's universe correlates with the gender differentiation of the characters. The authors of the article present the diversity of the Russian world, which is based on an interdisciplinary understanding of Nekrasov's artistic worldview, including such theoretical positions and relevant empirical experience as literary tradition (romantic heroes and realistic types), conventional-symbolic, national-cultural, sociological, as well as mundane and professional ones.

The article explores the famous work of M. M. Zoshchenko «Before Sunrise». The story, written during the World War II, is presented by the author as anti-fascist. The theme of the story is the formation of his own «I», psychological motives that encourage one to agree with suffering and violence or to fight them. Fascism in the perception of the author is a complete defeat in the fight against brutality and cruelty, a fear of fight with suffering. Zoshchenko refers to science as a bright hope to prove the existence of consciousness conquering the irrational nature of the soul. The story was a part of the war and post-war era: writers and philosophers (H. Arendt, J. P. Sartre, K. Popper and others) actively discussed the nature of totalitarian regimes, the reasons for their support, the role of personal perception in their affirmation, the possibility of individual rather than collective defining the good, the role of rationality destroying the individual for the sake of universal rational laws and at the same time encouraging individualism and critical thinking. The question of the role of individual consciousness is shown as one of the ancient questions of European philosophy, answered differently in the traditions of Platonism and Christianity. M. M. Zoshchenko is more a humanist writer who paid attention to the individual experience of a person. Trying to show that the triumph of consciousness can be a personal choice he discusses the role of artistic creativity, the nature of neurosis in experiences of many art geniuses. Zoshchenko is trying to make his story a clear demonstration of the possibility of combining the triumph of reason with the sincerity of personal artistic style and hence personal choice in favor of reason.

The purpose of this article is to describe the verbs of interpersonal interaction with the semantics of mental influence in the English language and to consider the criteria for semantic classification, on the basis of which the selected verbs can be grouped. There is a large number of works devoted to the study of lexico-semantic, pragmatic, morphological and other features of individual subgroups of interpersonal interaction verbs (in particular, compulsion verbs, verbs of speech influence, etc.), however, no attempt has yet been made to identify, study and classify a group of interpersonal interaction verbs with the semantics of mental influence. The material of the study is dictionary definitions from the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English and Longman Dictionary of English Language and Culture, as well as examples from the National British Corpus. The study describes in detail the procedure for selecting verbs of interpersonal interaction with the semantics of mental influence, identifies the features that are integral for this group of verbs, as well as the criteria for semantic classification, on the basis of which the selected verbs were divided into subgroups. Verbs of mental influence have a complex semantic structure. The signs «interpersonal interaction» and «impact on the object» are integral for the studied group of verbs. The sign of intentionality is not integral, but it is included in the semantic structure of most verbs of this group. In addition, the semantic structure of verbs of mental effects shows thatthe classification of verbs in this group may be an indication of the impact on a particular area of the psyche which indicates the correlation of the meanings of mental influence verbs with the findings of modern psychological theory

The originality of N. A. Nekrasov's early poems in «Dreams and Sounds» is based on patristic teaching. This collection revealed not only Nekrasov's discipleship as a poet, but also his «spiritual discipleship», his attempts to put his church experience into poetic form, his neophyte categorical nature as a spiritual person. Nekrasov was excused by his youth and purity of motives. But being a great poet, he soon realized that one should not write so bluntly and categorically about religious issues, that religiosity is important in art due to its hidden depth, rather than its open, almost journalistic expression of the dogmas and tenets of church life. Nevertheless, he managed to find forms of original poetic expres-sion. In each of his poems, Nekrasov not only follows church regulations, but also shows his own innovations. The po-ems «Death», «Conversation», «Doubt» and others are analyzed from this point of view. The content of these works shows that Nekrasov not only had an idea of the patristic Orthodox teaching, but also tried to wage «spiritual struggle», as far as it was possible at a very young age and in his life circumstances. After a short time he would find the strength to stop trying to present a scholastic «theory» of Christian doctrine, but would not lose the warmth of his faith, but bring its life-giving gospel spirit into his social poetry, filling it with the spirit of love, mercy, and holy impulses. The author raises the question of the links between the collection «Dreams and Sounds» and Nekrasov's later work.

The article analyzes social and economic relations between the priesthood and the Ptolemaic kings. The author examines the peculiarities of this issue coverage in Russian and foreign scientific literature, concluding that the problem was viewed more from a materialistic, religious, or artistic perspective, but not from the point of view of socio-economic analysis. The author considers the well-known fact of the Ptolemies' tolerance to the existence of the priesthood caste and their specific status in Egyptian society and studies the specificity of economic relations between power and the priesthood. The author makes a conclusion about the existence of a complex financial scheme which was beneficial both for the Ptolemies and the priesthood, as it was aimed at increasing the amount of temple lands: on the one hand, the policy raised the prosperity and the social status of priests, but, on the other hand, it led to the increase of lands which belonged to the Ptolemies by right of supreme rulers. However, basing on documents, the author states that under the Ptolemies private property of the priests became symbolic and was subjected to forced sale in case the priests had any debts to the royal treasury. The author emphasizes the fact that under the Ptolemies the priesthood became legal holders of the temple posts, while under the pharaohs priests’ positions were hereditary. Thus, royal power could influence social policy of the church, while the pharaohs were not allowed to interfere in it. The author concludes that the introduction of the sale of temple posts affected not only the material position of the priests, but also their status, as it influenced the requirements set for the candidates to priests. The author also examines the methods of economic pressure on the part of the Ptolemies (asilia, apomoira), which led to both economic subjection of temples to royal power and to the loss of the priests' right of autonomy in financial matters.

The article deals with phraseological expressions in Russian and French that have appeared in recent decades and are of great interest as a vivid example of figurative expressions, actively used in actual speech. Most of them are neolo-gisms and have not been registered in dictionaries yet, so their description is given for the first time. The materials of modern media represent rapid language changes and the main trends in the development of the Russian and French languages, namely: a significant influx of borrowings from the English language, alongside an increasing neologization of vocabulary and phraseology in native Russian and French environments. Phraseological expressions quite fully, though selectively reflect the dynamics of the Russian and French languages development, revealing the most mobile images of the concept nomination – politics, economics, business and sports where expressive speech is especially evi-dent nowadays. Phraseological neologisms are a very interesting phenomenon because when they are created the em-phasis is on «creativity. Any new language unit, in particular a phraseological one, has an idiomatic significance. The analysis considers the meanings of various language units, identifies the features of their use in speech, indicates their origin and the phraseological image underlying the meaning, taking into account the answer to the question of how phraseological units correlate with real practice and how new language units are accumulated and fixed. The phraseo-logical neologisms for the study have been selected from the materials of modern Russian and French media, as well as from dictionaries.

The phraseo-logical neologisms for the study have been selected from the materials of modern Russian and French media, as well as from dictionaries.","PeriodicalId":282574,"journal":{"name":"Verhnevolzhski Philological Bulletin","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132591836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article shows the genesis of N. S. Gumilyov's worldview through the analysis of his works, in which the poet comprehends the theme of war. The initial enthusiastic perception of war is explained by the poet's adherence to the adamistic concept of peace. The article reveals the main ideas of this concept. The authors assume that it essentially resembles the phenomenological reduction of E. Husserl, since the «new Adams» advocated the cleansing of man from the alluvial crust of «reflections and doubts». The change in the attitude of N. Gumilyov's approach to World War I and, as a result, the transformation of its artistic image in his poems and prose, is motivated by the poet's collision with reality and the realization that war, regardless of its nature and the reasons that caused it, is terrible in principle, since it takes human lives. As a result of changes in the perception of war in general and the transformation of Christian symbols in military lyrics: if in verses the military «cycle» it shows the faith of the author in a war in God's path, the path of transformation of man, and hence the world, then later heard the idea that instead of God in the soul of man there is godlessness, the war made a violent man, deprived of faith. Consequently, in the later poems of the military «cycle», N. S. Gumilyov's rejection of the adamistic concept of war is obvious.
