The myth of the mountain as a spiritual and transcendent space has been present in countless religions, beliefs and cosmogonies. The mountain has served as a privileged meeting place between the earthly and the spiritual. Architecture, since its origins, has emulated this heterotopic condition that represents the sacred space. The mountain atmosphere contains specific conditions of a physicochemical nature, which make the experiences and perceptions of high-altitude spaces acquire their own phenomenology. Through a global view capable of interconnecting behaviors, events and atmosphere, our intuition reveals the relationship between the phenomenological distortions that mountain space generates with the spirituality and mysticism associated with these places. The reconstruction of the alpine atmosphere in the Hormonorium, the Swiss pavilion for the Venice Biennale (2002) by Decosterd&Rahm, allows us to reflect on the spatial conditions of the mountain summits. The mountain atmosphere affects us physiologically, which generates, not only physical reactions and behavior of our body, but also produces changes in mental activity. An anti-fragile atmosphere is a space that improves with disorder, allows us to welcome the indeterminate and generates new unexpected possibilities.

Starting from The Portrait of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde, this editorial reflects on the landscapes that we do not see, where reality and representation, morality and hedonism are put in tension. In addition, it alludes to the need to relate the American and European landscapes based on their respective regulations and cultures on the landscape. Finally, it is found that in this first installment of this specific line of research, only investigations on the American landscape have been appreciated.

Waterfronts have historically been the domain of various appropriations of societies. These land and water interface spaces condense different interests, generally synthesized in the work vs. leisure dispute. Especially from the middle of the 20th century, in the face of numerous changes in the modes of production, the riverside sectors located in central strategic areas of the cities become obsolete. In this sense, these spaces are repositioned as an expectant place for transformation, based on their conversion into new public spaces that enable the development of collective activities and traditions. In this paper, we investigate the renovations of the waterfronts of six cities in different parts of the world, in order to critically analyse these landscapes of water as neoecosystems from a particular relationship of the binomial nature-culture.

In Haesbaert's (2004)view there is no way to define the individual, the group, the community, the society, outside the geographic-territorial context that contains them. The subjects produce their own territories, in such a way that their modification opens up an uncertain path in which the processes of dispossession, alienation of the place and destruction of the territorialities life-sustaining converge, coordinate with and feed back on each other. The stories of some farmers in Vichigasta, La Rioja, Argentina, show with great clarity, how these dynamics affect their social reproduction. They express profound helplessness in the face of the impossibility to slow down the expansion of business activities that have a different logic from that of the peasantry, and thus far have not been able to achieve results in their struggles in accordance with their expectations. The creation of a natural reserve appears as a possibility of safeguard and barrier against the expansive advance of capital. A renewed way, although not free from contradictions, of valuing the natural heritage as a provider of ecological services and goods, and even emerges as a space to contribute to land management by and for the Vichigasta community. The present work advances with agricultural growth trends analysis in the last 30 years in the area and describes the tensions generated as a consequence. It then analyzes the deterritorialization processes under way and recovers farmers’ views regarding current territorial trends.

The urban logics and the environmental and anthropic pre-existences draw different calligraphies on the territory which may be read in a landscape key. Following that idea, the paper aims to understand the configurations of the rural-urban front regarding the territorial projects and their multiple ways of relating environment and land use. The methodology used is a study case based on the documentary review and analysis in conjunction with the oral testimonies collected in the field work. The analyses go over four spatio-temporal breaks derived from the territorialisation projects considered. Finally, guidelines are reviewed to regain the balance of the territory.

The article focuses on the vineyard landscape in the periurban area of Greater Mendoza, which is threatened by the advance of urbanization with the loss of vineyard and olive grove properties in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The preservation of this landscape is a priority, not only because of its economic and productive value, but also because of its environmental, identity and cultural values. However, this landscape is disappearing and is invisible both to those who live in it and to those who should be protecting and managing it from the public sphere. This paper proposes its analysis through the Landscape Charter of the Americas (LCA) by means of the strata which, according to this document, make up the American landscape. The results show the possibilities of this Charter as an operational instrument to identify the components, their relationships and interdependencies, as well as to reveal their "character", values, potential and the underlying conflicts. They provide guidelines for the management and design of catalogues which ensure their protection.

The construction of the Mediterranean coast in Spain has been linked to the economic development of the country based on tourism called ‘of sun and beach’. The transformation of the spaces demanded for this tourism, the aging of the oldest nodes and the effects of the real estate bubble on the coast have put the spotlight on the forms of this tourist space. The urban projects of the coastal tourism space have their own morphological characteristics, which differentiate them from other urban fabrics. In this work the metamorphosis of the urban forms used in the tourist nodes of the coast of the Region of Murcia is analysed and the characteristics of the different territorial environments are exposed, as a consequence of their fragmented construction. Finally, the burdens on the territory of the tourist space are compared as a tool to test the hypothesis that these projects have progressively lost their relationship with the landscape, at the same time that they cause a strong consumption of their resources. For this, different data have been used, mainly cadastral cartography and aerial orthophotos. As a result, it has been possible to quantify representative variables of the load on the territory, with 546 m2 of urbanized surface per linear meter of beach and 222 m2 of built surface.

This work develops aspects of the teaching of architecture, taking up the workshop as a characteristic pedagogical modality. From this point, it is proposed to describe its essential aspects in order to infer the type of training that determines its way. In this sense, the interactions it promotes, its characteristics and its validity in the approach to planning processes for contemporary and situated architecture are fundamentally detailed. As part of the reflections, it is stated that the logic of the workshop, within the framework of the teaching-learning processes, determines and stimulates a training in competences, which contributes to autonomy, personal development and builds a personal -social and discipline. And that these values, around planning practice, promote non-linear approaches, in direct link with the contemporary paradigm of complex thinking.

Through Do Ho Suh’s installations, in which the artist recreates the houses where he has lived, we reflect on the domestic space. Touring each of its rooms and observing its objects and its marks, we also pierce his memory, remembering every detail of ours. Thinking on the material part and the artistic framework that envelops the pieces, we go deeper into the immaterial that embraces our homes and move forward through a series of problems that we find around them. We want to think about home as a protective refuge, but this is not always the case. Suh’s homes are made up of thin glazes, of a series of layers that overlap with multiple readings about the space we inhabit and, with it, about ourselves.
