Because of some traditional modes of teaching, our understanding for Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) in probability and statistics appears narrow, making application of CAI in probability and statistics superficial. Four aspects of CAI in probability and statistics are researched mainly to reform traditional teaching and enhance teaching quality and effect of probability and statistics. Firstly, the paper defines traditional teaching of probability and statistics. Secondly, the paper addresses some skills of doing multimedia courseware of probability and statistics. Thirdly, the paper considers application and development of statistical software of CAI in probability and statistics. At last, the paper stresses the leading role of teacher in CAI.

As the main infrastructure of Internet-two, digital library have had a rapidly development and received a lot of harvest in recent years. But one of the key problems is how to help users to find satisfied resources more efficiently among the affluent contents in heterogeneous repositories of digital libraries. Metadata as a kind of structure data about data can describe the content, semantics and services of data. Metadata, which is a foundation of defining and organizing the resources in digital library, plays a pivotal role in constructing resources. Therefore, metadata extraction, semantic retrieval and semantic annotate in metadata automatic management are challengeable research tasks. Each kind of metadata could be regarded as a classification. Therefore, metadata extraction is just as the classifying work for every document block. The paper focused on the research of automatic metadata extraction based on mutual information which is a widely used information theoretic measure, in a descriptive way, to compute the stochastic dependency of discrete random variables. Metadata extraction has been performed using max-mutual information including linear and non-linear feature conversions. Entropy is made use of and extended to find right features commendably in digital library systems.

Temporal educational information processing is an important and challenging issue in database management systems. After the shortages of current temporal data management are analyzed in detail, this paper introduces an engine-like approach to implement the above information processing. According to this approach, a temporal database middleware as a stratum is constructed on the top of the existing non-temporal DBMS, named TDBEngine, and the related query language and architecture factors are taken into consideration, and then the feasible architecture is designed and implemented, whilst, syntactic and semantic issues are solved. Finally, the demonstration of an example stums that this approach meets the requirement of temporal educational information processing.

Introduce a robust and flexible mobile robot control system. Motion description language is brought in behavior-based robotics. The behavior-based robotics does well in controlling mobile robot. Using motion description language, not only the interactions between discrete and continuous dynamics existing in a robotics system can be described, but the complexity of steering a robot can also be measured quantitatively. In this paper, the problem of object-following by nonholonomic wheeled mobile robots is studied using this method, and a Matlab simulative results verify the validity of this method in the end.

Second Life supports rich communication, virtual collaboration, and 3-D content creation. The Second Life synthetic world has great potential for teaching and learning. There are hundreds of universities all over the world pay attention to the engaging teaching and learning aids and effective research tools in Second Life. For faculty members to adopt Second Life and take advantage of innovative features in their classes, however, they must first get to know Second Life and become familiar with features that are relevant to their own teaching. This is not a trivial process for many university educators. This paper provide not only guide to getting start in Second Life, but also the quality of it. First it gives an overview of the Second Life for educational purpose. Then it discusses the method to use Second Life for education by an educational case. Finally, it describes the barriers probably encountered in the process of using Second Life.

Group awareness is the basis of the group cooperation. Its model and application is an important research field in CSCW community. A role based hierarchical group awareness model (RHGAM) on the basis of the previous research is presented in this paper. Regarding role as the basis of the group cooperation, firstly RHGAM constructs a group cooperation environment (GCE), and then GCE is extended by group awareness content, awareness hierarchy, the task decomposition rule. The model divides the awareness information into four levels by decomposition and recombination using a role-task graph and the thinking of group structure. The implementation mechanism of the model to provide group cooperation and awareness mechanism in the project Personal Research Information Workspace is also discussed in this paper.
