CAN BARBARA CASSIN’S AND JERZY BARTMIŃSKI’S LEXICONS BE CONSIDERED AS COMPLEMENTARY PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACHES?The article aims to present two different approaches to ‘philosophical words’ or ‘names of values’, that is Vocabulaire européen des philosophies [2004] directed by Barbara Cassin and Axiological Lexicon of Slavs and Their Neighbours [2015-2019] directed by Jerzy Bartmiński. In the first part the two projects are presented in context and compared by analyzing their differences and similarities in order to prove certain complementarity between the two approaches. In the second part the concept of freedom/ liberty is analyzed. After presenting how it is treated in the two dictionaries, the author studies the occurrences of ‘minor’ words for freedom: liberty and swoboda, in David’s Graeber Debt and its Polish translation.

(UN)TRANSLATABLE: RECENT FRENCH TRANSLATION STUDIES ON FROZEN EXPRESSIONS AND PUNS
Frozen expressions and puns can be compared in terms of translation solutions. As plural elements and because of their idiomaticity and cultural charge, they have long been considered as « untranslatable ». However, recent translation studies have focused on these textual objects, proposing several solutions. We will draw on recent studies and some older ones to illustrate the techniques the translator can adopt. The sharing of knowledge and translation practices between different fields is always fruitful: when faced with a frozen expression or a pun, the translator often encounters the same problems, so similar solutions could be adopted. The intersection of descriptive and normative approaches helps to define translation solutions for these plural and resistant textual objects.

MILESTONES FOR A HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE FRANCOPHONE TRANSLATION STUDIES FIELD (2ND PART)First, we identify the period before traductologie and then the issues of a historiography of translation studies, before grasping the debates around the term „translation studies” in the 1970s, in particular the motivations of the various equivalents suggested for Translation Studies (TS). In a second step, we refer to the precursors (1950s-1960s) and the pioneers (1980s and 1990s) of this French-language translation studies: what names emerge from this recent period and how have they advanced the reflection? Then we turn our attention to the problem of the translation of TS into French and translation studies into English. Finally, in order to define the socio-institutional dimension of the discipline, we study the parameters and factors that have favored and still favor this French-speaking translation studies, such as associations, training places and programs, recruitment bodies, as well as certain channels of dissemination (doctoral schools, research teams, journals, collections). Our final question focuses on the direct and indirect influences of French speaking researchers in the humanities and social sciences on TS and translation studies.

INTERPRETIVE THEORY OF TRANSLATION – ITS INFLUENCE IN THE WORLD
The history of the Interpretive Theory of Translation (ITT), which began in 1968, is closely linked to Danica Seleskovitch. Under her guidance, ITT developed in two directions: research and teaching. The researchers’ interest focused on the process, studied first on conference interpretation and later on translation. Their research, later validated by psycholinguistics and cognitive science, subdivided the translation process into three stages: comprehension – deverbalization – reexpression, with deverbalization representing a departure from the linguistic theories of the time. Deverbalization is, however, an essential cognitive mechanism of any intralingual communication. The doctorate in translation studies (1974) broadened and enriche research on numerous language pairs and various text genres. The pedagogy applied at the École Supérieure d’Interprètes et de Traducteurs (ESIT) based on the principles of ITT was recognized by the European Commission and used as the basis for the European Masters in Conference Interpreting. ESIT’s many foreign students and doctors spread the theory worldwide for teaching and research. ITT’s major works have been translated into several languages.

THE INTERPRETIVE THEORY OF DANICA SELESKOVITCH TWENTY YEARS AFTER: THE QUESTION OF THE DIRECTIONALITY IN CONFERENCE INTERPRETINGThe aim of the present paper is to examine directionality in conference interpreting and the changing concepts of active and passive languages in the practice of interpreting in Poland. The study presents the results of a small-scale survey conducted in Warsaw in Winter 2019/2020 among interpreters, members of national professional associations of interpreters in order to investigate the changing landscape of the profession, the changing roles of interpreters working out of their A language into their B or C languages or between their B and C languages in different settings. Apart of the data gathered in the survey, in-depth interviews were carried out with three interpreters so as to indentify possible time-contigent changes in their perception of directionality in interpreting. The study draws some conclusions concerning the utility of language regime and the training of new generations of conference interpreters.

FRUCTUOUS LIAISONS: THEORIES OF FRENCH SEMIOTICIANS AS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR POLISH RESEARCHERS IN INTERSEMIOTIC TRANSLATION
Today, reflection on film adaptation and intersemiotic translation oscillates between two extremes: “one-off” analyses of concrete works on the one hand, and global reflection on the multimodal nature of new media, on the other. From this perspective, intersemioticity is conceived as a quality “hidden” in every text, including those with no other codes than the verbal code; in such cases, adapting the text to other media “reveals” its intrinsic intersemiotic potential. But in following this new path, scholars have moved away from the original aim of the French Semiotics: to prove that Jakobson was right in declaring that intersemiotic translation is a process that can be compared to interlinguistic translation, that the former is subject to the same rules as the latter and, consequently, that transmutation can be analyzed using the methods and tools originally created for interlinguistic translation. There is, however, a group of Polish researchers who have carried out, and continue to carry out, in-depth research into the problem of “adaptation-as-translation”. In this article, I shall attempt to outline the impact that French theory (first filmological, then semiotic and semiological) has had on intersemiotic translation research (by authors publishing both in French and in Polish); my second aim is to familiarize French-speaking readers with the “Polish school’s” theories of adaptation-as-translation, especially those of Seweryna Wysłouch, and their potential to promote and deepen reflection on the language of film and intersemiotic translation.

THE OMISSION AND ITS AVATARS: TERMINOLOGICAL CHALLENGES AND ISSUES IN DESCRIPTIVE TRANSLATION STUDIESIn this study, Ph. Anckaert gives an overview of the terms proposed over the last thirty years by French-speaking terminologists to designate the various forms of non-translation, which are either errors or procedures. It emerges that there is a high degree of terminological uncertainty surrounding the notion of omission. To overcome this difficulty, which is detrimental to the quality of translation studies, the author proposes to abandon the use of the term omission to designate a translation procedure and to use effacement (deletion) as a hyperonym for implicitation, deletion of heterolingualism and other procedures that remain to be identified or validat éd. This ordering of the terminological apparatus is part of the desire to identify mutually exclusive descriptors, which are indispensable for quantitative analysis conceived as the scientific basis for qualitative analysis.

CONTRIBUTIONS OF CHRISTIAN BALLIU IN MEDICAL TRANSLATION RESEARCH Internationally renowned theorist in translation studies, Christian Balliu is the author of about 100 publications on the history and theories of translation. He is also a leading figure in medical translation and its didactics. Our article aims to illustrate his original, sometimes ironic, representation of medical texts to be translated. By reexamining the notion of medical text, the role of connotative and affective vocabulary, erroneous denominative values of terms and their denominative imprecision, the representation of the practitioner-patient relationship, Christian Balliu goes beyond the discursive and linguistic framework of the text. In his work, he extends his approach to medical translation to the social, economic, anthropological and historical dimensions in which the understanding of the hidden sides of the medical text remains a fundamental stage.

HENRI MESCHONNIC: A MASTER WITHOUT A SCHOOL Henri Meschonnic’s international reputation in the field of the Translation Studies hasn’t been properly assessed, as we can judge by the translations of his theoretical works to English: few and late. The author of the paper above discusses the causes of this phenomenon of “non-translation” indicating, first of all, the belligerent temperament of the great French scholar, his propension to the polemic offending his opponents, including his admirers, some of which, e.g. George Steiner, could have been his translators to English. Secondly, the author shows which elements of Meschonnic’s work have been revolutionary in the 1970-ies and claims that the impact of his work was gradually eclipsed by his lack of the academical rigour, namely in defining the key notion of his work, the poetics, instead of very promising attempts in his early studies.

HISTORY, THEORY, DIDACTICS: MICHEL BALLARD’S TRANSLATION STUDIES This article intends to show to what extent Michel Ballard’s contribution to the Translation Studies literature is essential and has made him one of the most important figures in the field. Indeed, he not only contributed to have translation science taught at the University along with translation courses but also developed it as a proper field of research, independent from – though related to – linguistics. Ballard nearly left no stone unturned and interested at the same time in theoretical, historical and teaching aspects of translation. His views, always based on the observation of corpora, include aspects often widely neglected by translation theorists such as the translator’s creativity and resulted in a renewed conception of translation units including subjectivity. Ballard wrote 120 articles and 25 books, a lot of them being well-known references for whoever has an interest in translation.
