This paper discusses the characteristics of cako marriage as the symbol of cultural identity for Manggarai society, as reflected in the meaning of the cako marriage, customary rules in the cako marriage, and the changes of social role and status in the cako marriage, in view of social anthropology which deals with the study of the relationship of culture and society. The materials are based on data collected through research which is descriptive in nature. The results of study show that the cako marriage refers to the form of marriage between a man of the elder offspring and a woman of the younger offspring. As the two families are of the same clan, the cako marriage is endogamy. Based on the customary rules of Manggarai society, the cako marriage is only permitted for a woman of the younger offspring of the third layer above. Due to the cako marriage, the social role and status change in some respect as the elder offspring acts as wife taker is known as anak wina in Manggarai language and the younger offspring acts as wife giver known as anak rona in Manggarai language. Being wife taker, the elder offspring holds lower power, or vice versa, being wife giver, the younger offspring holds higher power.

Using simple and interesting strategies in teaching Prose is a must for a lecturer. There are many new methods or strategies to be applied in our classroom when we teach our students the characterization theories, one of them is STEAL Strategy. It is basically the characterization theories that have been summed up into a mnemonic device in form of an acronym (Speech, Thought, Effect on Others, Action, Looks) to help our students to easily memorize something. This writing is trying to prove the effectiveness of the strategy when it is applied to a novel entitled BFG written by Roald Dahl. The results show that this strategy helped the writer in making inferences, finding specific textual evidence to support the assertion about the chosen character, and also developing arguments. Therefore, the writer would like to suggest the English Study Program lecturers who teach Prose or Extensive Reading to apply this method in his or her classroom.

This paper describes and explains the essence of reference and inference as the linguistic devices forming the unity of a discourse. The material of this paper is based on secondary data collected through library research and the method of data collection was a documentary study. The results of the study show that references and inferences as the linguistic devices are two external elements forming the unity of discourse that should be taken into account when someone wants to understand and interpret the meanings of the language used in a discourse of text of discourse. As such, it is required for him/her to know in more depth about the essence of reference and inference in line with their functions and significances as the external elements forming the unity of discourse.

Tulisan ini menyajikan hasil penelitian yang mengkaji beberapa hambatan dalam pengembangan program pariwisata budaya di provinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). Materi yang dikaji dalam tulisan ini bersumber pada data hasil penelitian lapangan dan penelitian kepustakaan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hambatan mengendalai pengembangan program pariwisata budaya di NTT dikarenakan kurangnya pemahaman masyarakat tentang hakikat kebudayaan, kurangnya pengetahuan masyarakat tentang kebermaknaan budaya, dan kurangnya apresiasi masyarakat terhadap budayanya sendiri. Tulisan ini diharapkan bermanfaat untuk memperkaya sumber acuan bagi pemerintah dan masyarakat NTT dalam mengembangkan program pariwisata budaya.

Artikel ini berisi paparan mengenai persepsi orang Lamaholot di Solor Barat tentang tanah. Tanah memiliki fungsi vital dalam kehidupan manusia. Fungsi tanah dimaksud dapat diasumsikan bahwa terdapat persepsi yang bervariasi tentang tanah berdasarkan konteks budaya. Persepsi yang dimaksudkan dalam penelitian ini diungkapkan melalui analisis makna metaforik yang terkandung di dalam berbagai tuturan dalam bahasa Lamaholot. Berlandaskan konsep ekologi dan metafora, serta teori Linguistik Kebudayaan, diperoleh hasil analisis, sebagai berikut: (1) tanah sebagai tempat bermukim, dan (2) tempat mencari nafkah. Ekspresi kebahasaan tentang tanah yang tersirat di dalam data penelitian menunjukkan bahwa orang Lamaholot di Solor Barat mempersepsikan tanah sebagai benda yang bermuatan makna sakral dan magis. Kesakralan tanah diekspresikan dalam peringatan, “jangan main-main dengan tanah”. Ekspresi ini berimplikasi pada sikap dan perilaku terhadap tanah, antara lain: patuh dalam hal kepemilikan dan batas-batasnya. Indonesian language as the identity of the Indonesian people can actually build the character of nationalism. Early Indonesian nationalism was sparked by colonialism as a common enemy. The originator of Indonesian nationalism today is a shared identity. The Indonesian language is one of those shared identities, alongside the flag, the state emblem and the national anthem. To strengthen the role of Indonesian in strengthening nationalism, it is necessary to have an output-oriented Indonesian language education that has a nationalist character, patriotism, and a sense of responsibility for the life of the Indonesian language. Indonesian language education must be able to reduce the pragmatism of the view on the importance of the Indonesian language, minimize the deviation from regulation on the Indonesian language, and foster the principle of learning Indonesian to achieve the Indonesian language in a global context.

Penelitian ini mengkaji karakteristik dan dinamika sistem pertanian lahan kering dalam kebudayaan Manggarai, lambang identitas masyarakat Manggarai sebagai anggota kelompok etnik Manggarai di Flores Provinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur. Kerangka teori yang memayungi penelitian ini adalah teori kebudayaan dan teori perubahan kebudayaan. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif. Prosedur penelitian adalah penelitian lapangan dan kepustakaan. Penelitian lapangan bertujuan mendapat data primer sebagai data utama. Lokasi penelitian adalah wilayah Manggarai dengan lokasi utama kota Ruteng. Sumber data adalah masyarakat Manggarai, khususnya yang tinggal di kota Ruteng yang diwakili lima orang informan kunci. Metode pengumpulan data adalah pengamatan dan wawancara, yang dielaborasi dengan teknik rekam, elisitasi, dan simak-catat. Penelitian kepustakaan bertujuan mendapat data sekunder. Metode pengumpulan data adalah studi dokumenter. Data dianalisis secara kualitatif dengan metode induktif, analisis bertolak dari data menuju konsep/teori yang bersifat lokal-ideografis berupa perian tertulis karakteristik dan dinamika sistem pertanian lahan kering dalam kebudayaan Manggarai. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, sistem pertanian lahan kering dalam kebudayaan Manggarai pada masa silam memiliki karakteristik khas dan khusus, sebagaimana tercermin dalam nama dan bentuk lahan pertanian, jumlah dan jenis lahan pertanian, teknik pengolahan lahan pertanian, jenis tanaman, dan taksonomi klafikasi musim. Akan tetapi, bersamaan dengan dinamika masyarakat Manggarai, fungsi kebudayaan Manggarai sebagai lambang identitas masyarakat Manggarai mengalami perubahan dalam tataran tertentu. Perubahan itu dapat disaksikan, antara lain, dalam perubahan sistem pertanian lahan kering, sebagaimana tercermin dalam fenomena perubahan berkaitan dengan nama dan bentuk lahan pertanian, jumlah dan jenis lahan pertanian, teknik pengolahan lahan pertanian, jenis tanaman pertanian, jenis tanaman, dan taksonomi klafikasi musim.

Data dianalisis secara kualitatif dengan metode induktif, analisis bertolak dari data menuju konsep/teori yang bersifat lokal-ideografis berupa perian tertulis karakteristik dan dinamika sistem pertanian lahan kering dalam kebudayaan Manggarai. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, sistem pertanian lahan kering dalam kebudayaan Manggarai pada masa silam memiliki karakteristik khas dan khusus, sebagaimana tercermin dalam nama dan bentuk lahan pertanian, jumlah dan jenis lahan pertanian, teknik pengolahan lahan pertanian, jenis tanaman, dan taksonomi klafikasi musim. Akan tetapi, bersamaan dengan dinamika masyarakat Manggarai, fungsi kebudayaan Manggarai sebagai lambang identitas masyarakat Manggarai mengalami perubahan dalam tataran tertentu. The religion of Christian has been came in Amarasi. In the beginning, people in Amarasi had ethno-religion called re’u. The Portuguese brought the catholic and Holland brought protestant. When the Holland came in Timor, the Portuguese had been there. Times, both of them wared. In that time Amarasi’s king built a friendship with Portuguese, so the Holland, war not only with the Portuguese but Amarasi too. In the same time the society had been catholic because the influence from the Portuguese. Finally, Amarasi and Portuguese losed in the Penfui war. The king of Amarasi put down the catholic and took up the protestant, because the Holland pushed. So, the society called koroh natiik maria and they drawed in their traditional clothes. Nowadays, the society know the koroh natiik maria is a kind of symbol to their clothes that they called tais. Koroh, is the symbol of the king and kingdom, and maria is the symbol of catholic. This paper used history approach with library study.

This study describes and explains marginalisation strategy through discourse as social practice in Indonesian language, as reflected in language behavior appearing in the form of euphemism, disphemism, labelisation, and stereotype, one the basis of library research. The result of study shows that marginalisation strategy through discourse as social practice in Indonesian language designates the power dominance of upper level social class towards lower level social class. The manfestation of the marginalisation strategy is stated and implied in the use of the following words or terms (a) ;pemutusan hubungan kerja’ replacing ‘pemberhentian’ or ‘pemecatan’ (euphemism) in economy discourse, (b) ‘pencaplokan’ or ‘penyerobotan’ with the conotation of negative meaning (diphemism) in political discouse, (c) ‘penggarap liar’ and ‘penyerobot lahan’ with the negative meaning (labelisation) in political discourse, and (d) ‘perempuan’ with the negative meaning and ‘wanita’ with the positive meaning (stereotype) in social and cultural discourse .
