ABSTRACT This study focuses on two different measures to quantify intervention effectiveness for multiple-baseline design data. The influence of 216 design conditions on the estimate of the Tau-U index (with three different variants) and the regression-based effect size is empirically investigated through a Monte Carlo simulation study. Results demonstrate that the magnitude of the within-case variance influences the Tau-U indices the most when the true intervention effect is small relative to large within-case variance. The within-case variance does not systematically influence the regression-based effect size measure. The Critical Tau-U is introduced to help determine if Tau-U estimates indicate evidence in support of an intervention effect and address underlying issues with currently used benchmarks.

Participants:The participants were 28 preschool children, between the ages of 3 and 5 years, were selected from a larger study that included 47 children. Inclusion criteria were (a) having at least 10% combined input/output in both English and Spanish, as determined through parents and teachers’ responses on the Bilingual Input-Output Survey (b) passing a hearing test, and (c) completing a language sample in at least one language.

Design: A concurrent multiple-baseline design across participants was planned; however, due to one participant exiting the study, the experimenters included a third participant via a non-concurrent multiple-baseline design. Generalization to untaught body parts, recombinative generalization, and novel forms of stimulation were tested for. Although the experimenters did not specifically train or test for maintenance, two of the three participants were reported to engage in the target behaviors across untrained settings.
