The study aims to reconstruct a fragment of the linguistic worldview of the Kabardian language embodied in the gustatory attribute ‘гуащIэ’ (sour). The paper examines the features of metaphorical and metonymic transfers of meaning, which are the main mechanisms of conceptualization and categorization of new knowledge. The complexity of studying the semantics of adjectives the denotative content of which is formed by a range of nominal lexemes combined with them is emphasized. The scientific novelty of the paper is determined by the fact that it represents the first attempt to construct the meanings of the gustatory adjective ‘гуащIэ’ (sour) involving the material of the Kabardian language. Based on the analysis of interpretations of the meanings containing prototypical denotation, a standard, and the interpretation of non-linguistic information known about it, criteria for metaphorical and metonymic shifts in the conceptual expansion of this adjective are established. As a result of the study, it was found that the attribute ‘гуащIэ’ (sour) develops metaphorical and metonymic vectors of meaning reinterpretation in equal measure. The study of text fragments reveals new types of denotations defined by the attribute ‘гуащIэ’ (sour), which suggests the development of new regular meanings of the adjective under consideration.

The aim of the study is to outline the place of the poet Kunwar Narain in the Hindi poetry of the 20th century, as well as to identify the main features of the images of cities in his creative work and the author’s worldview behind his approach to depicting urban images. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that “new poetry” in Hindi and the Kunwar Narain’s creative work remain little studied. The paper is the first in Russian Indology to consider in a comprehensive manner the urban images in Kunwar Narain’s creative work and to raise the question about the further development of his creative method following the poet’s exposure to Western modernist trends, which was common among most major Hindi poets in the 1950s and 1970s. As a result, it has been found that the problem of alienation, the spiritual loneliness of a person among a hostile environment, especially urban, which is central in modernism, is not the main one for the poet. The main focus for the author is the image of the city in connection with the themes of travel, homeland and culture. The result of the study amounts to a clarification of ideas regarding how Hindi poetry developed during and following the “new poetry” era: the protest sentiments of modernists have been replaced by a perspective associated with the transition from youthful rebellion against reality to acceptance and attempts to comprehend it.

The aim of the study is to identify the universality, diversity and uniqueness of the color conceptual sphere in English, French and Russian linguistic cultures, implemented through phraseological units with a color feature and color terms in English, French and Russian. The paper presents a linguocultural analysis of the GREEN, GRAY, YELLOW, ORANGE, PURPLE, PINK and BROWN concepts in the three languages. The study is novel in that it is the first to identify, systematize and describe peripheral and single color concepts using the material of three languages. As a result of the research, it was found that the color conceptual sphere is more relevant for French linguistic culture than for English and Russian linguistic cultures. The peripheral concepts GREEN, GRAY, and YELLOW in the linguistic cultures under comparison are widely used to reflect character traits, appearance, physical characteristics of a person and relationships between people. The single concepts ORANGE, PURPLE, PINK and BROWN mainly reflect the color characteristics of the inorganic world. Color acts as an expressor of universality, diversity and uniqueness in the construction of the color conceptual sphere in the considered linguistic cultures.

The aim of the study is to identify the functional and semantic potential of paraphonation tools for representing the emotional state of characters. The paper examines the paraphonation tools that function in I. S. Turgenev’s novel “Fathers and Sons”: verbs of speech action that have a semantic potential for expressing emotional states; specifiers complementing verbs that do not have an emotive seme in the lexical meaning; figurative names such as epithets and metaphors. The authors emphasize that the functional and semantic potential of paraphonation tools is fully precisely in the context, which allows for the semantic accuracy of emotional state description. Particular attention is paid to the contexts in which emotions are expressed by a combination of paraphonation tools and other elements of the paralinguistic system: parakinemes, paraproxemes, etc. The paper also analyzes the author’s description of phonation phenomena such as sighing, laughter, silence, which act as markers of specific emotional states. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the paraphonation tools considered in the functional and pragmatic aspect, firstly, realize the emotive potential in a literary text to varying degrees and, secondly, affect the reader’s perception of the meanings of the text and provide a correct understanding of the author’s intention as a whole. As a result of the study, the features of paraphonation tools performing the function of representing the emotional state of characters, specifying emotions, creating a psychological portrait of a character were revealed.

The study aims to shed light on the peculiarities of transformation of literary and folklore genre structures in the literary fairy tale “Ivan the Fool” by Leo Tolstoy (1885-1886). The paper reveals the genre polyphony of this literary fairy tale by Tolstoy in comparison of its content with the problems of the philosophical novella of Voltaire, the social utopia of Th. More, F. Bacon and Plato, with the poetics of folklore (fairy tales, epics, riddles) and the military novella. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in determining the connection between Tolstoy’s artistic “ideas” in “Ivan the Fool” and the humanistic principle of his religious, philosophical and journalistic writings of the 1880s and 1900s (pacifism, criticism of historical forms of slavery, advocacy of nonviolence and universal love); in providing a historical and theoretical literary substantiation of the genre genesis of Tolstoy’s tale. As a result of the study, the genre form of Tolstoy’s literary fairy tale was characterized as a complex structure combining features of different types of literary creativity. The methods of artistic solution in this work containing socio-philosophical and ethical issues peculiar to philosophical novellas, social utopias and folk tales were classified. Scientific knowledge about folklore and ancient Russian reception in the plot, themes, images and details was supplemented with new facts.

The aim of the research is to identify the role of dedications in English scientific prose in ontologizing its heterogeneity. One of the paratext elements of modern scientific publications in English, i.e., dedication, was used as the language material. The scientific novelty of the research is as follows: for the first time, dedication has been investigated as a type of paratext in English-language academic discourse and the dedication examples representing personal discourse and acting as paratext elements in institutional discourse have been selected. The influence of dedication functions and characteristics on the ontologization of academic text heterogeneity has been empirically confirmed; the chosen methodology has been used for the first time to analyze authentic examples, which were not previously described from the perspective of the problem under study. The paper summarizes the key characteristics of scientific discourse that are important for identifying the correlation between the ways of heterogeneity manifestation and the structural element in which it is actualized. The research findings demonstrated the following facts: general classifications of dedications without differentiation by the text type are applicable to dedications of scientific texts, the latter contribute to the ontologization of the heterogeneity of scientific texts. In addition, the heterogeneity of scientific texts was shown to be reflected in the range of types of dedications and the variety of their functions, manifested to varying degrees depending on the type of the text itself, the type of dedication and the author’s intention.

The study aims to identify the word-formation, semantic and stylistic features of words with complex stems belonging to the word family with the verbal base word “lieben” in the German language. The paper examines in detail the formation of words according to parts of speech, finds polysemous units among them and determines how their meanings developed, as well as the type of polysemy. In addition, the author drew attention to the spheres of functioning of these words in speech. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the author is the first to describe words with complex stems belonging to the word family comprehensively, from different positions. As a result of the study, it was found that compound nouns are the most numerous class of compound words and blends in this word family. Compound words, or composites, are formed by compounding, blends are formed by blending. According to their semantic structure, words with complex stems are monosemants, only a small number of them have four and two meanings. Words with complex stems of this word family both denote common concepts and are terms in certain branches of science, such as biology, botany, psychology, astronomy, mythology, etc.
