François de Curel, mistakenly regarded as an author of the “problem play”, enjoyed a reputation of an innovator in dramaturgy during his lifetime. By rejecting the canonical form of the drama, he proposes works in which psychological analysis prevails over the dramatic progression of the action. In fact, in La Figurante, the French writer paints a portrait of the characters who resemble “marionettes” operated by unknown forces. In order to survive in bourgeois society, they assume the “masks” that social conventions demand of them and conscientiously play the comedy. However, under the facade and the artifices, the protagonists keep their existential anxieties which express their inner sincerity. In this context, the analysis of this play will lead us to seek affinities with the grotesque dimension of the Pirandello theater.

In this article, I revisit the origins of the attributive relative clause in French (in Je le vois qui vient), in order to advance the hypothesis that reanalysis preceding grammaticalization of this construction originates from a double ambiguity which is situated on two different planes of analysis: (1) on the plane of (non-)restriction of the referent of the antecedent of qui; (2) on the plane of informational structure of the sentence; and that the mentioned reanalysis originates from certain semantic and syntactic link between the attributive relative and the narrative relative clauses, which is best discernible in a kind of mixed relative clause which has relatively high frequency in Old French. In conclusion, I verify the relevance of the application of the concept of constructionalization to the evolution of the attributive relative clause.

This article deals with the argumentative function of evidential markers in Viel’s novel Paris-Brest. We argue that the combination between reported speeches and evidentials allows the internal narrator to build contexts where his moral responsibility is successfully denied. More specifically, we analyse the expressive effects conveyed by the different types of the evidentials he resorts to in terms of epistemic commitment and reliability.

La poesía satírico burlesca de Juan del Valle y Caviedes (Porcuna, Jaén, 1645-Lima, 1698), fiel a la configuración lírica de finales del siglo XVII, está muy ligada a la plaza pública y a las circunstancias y acontecimientos producidos en ella. Por ello, el presente trabajo analiza en algunos textos de Caviedes la representación poética de los mulatos que habitaron la ciudad de Lima en dicho periodo. Después de revisar las lecturas de Hill (2007) – que estudia estos textos como “poemas de casta” – se presta particular atención a los modos de representación – y valoración – de este grupo de sujetos marginales desde la perspectiva de un contemporáneo.

In the novel El río del Edén by José María Merino, the reader learns about the life experiences of Daniel and Tere. This paper analyzes three stages in their lives: the camping trip, the period before the birth of their son Silvio and the consequences of his medical condition on his parents. These critical moments have been seen from the ironic perspectives of classical and contemporary philosophers: Socrates, Cicero, Kierkegaard, Muecke, Glicksberg and Robbe-Grillet, among others. The concept eiron vs alazon, dissimulation, humor and incoherence are the theoretical tools that permitted this study to bridge the gap between the literary text and the philosophical approaches to irony.

Les énoncés passifs ont traditionnellement fait l’objet, en français, d’études descriptives visant à distinguer les emplois des auxiliaires être et se faire (Tesnière 1988; Le Goffic 1993; Riegel et coll. 1994; Le Bellec 2014). L’espagnol possède deux auxiliaires formellement équivalents : ser et hacerse. Or, à la différence du français, leur emploi n’est pas concurrent puisque hacerse est sémantiquement restreint à l’expression d’actions bénéfiques (e.g., Se hizo masajear la espalda ; Il s’est fait masser le dos). L’objectif de notre étude est de comparer les moyens grammaticaux et lexicaux utilisés en français et en espagnol pour thématiser le patient dans des actions désagréables, à l’oral. Nos résultats montrent que les locuteurs francophones emploient le passif dans 59,3% des réponses, alors que les hispanophones préfèrent des conceptualisations à la voix active où le patient-victime est marqué sous le cas grammatical d’un objet (37,5%). Au sein des conceptualisations passives, le français montre une préférence pour se faire + infinitif (78,9%) alors qu’en espagnol le patient-victime est thématisé à l’aide du complément d’objet d’affectation introduit par la préposition « a » (58,8%). Notre étude montre que la thématisation du patient-victime est un trait distinctif entre ces langues et suggère, dans ce domaine conceptuel, une saillance de la perspective passive pour le français.
