The aim of the research is to identify the peculiarities of the artistic image of Great Britain based on the original and self-translation of G. D. Grebenshchikov’s essay “Westminster Bells”. The paper discusses the creation of the country’s image through the use of a complex chronotope, imitation of documentary style and references to classical British literature. Additionally, the images of the ruler and the people are interconnected through the portrayal of Westminster Abbey bells and radio. The scientific novelty of the research lies in introducing into scientific use the study material, as the self-translation has not been published by the author and the Russian version of the essay has not been reprinted since its publication in the newspaper “Novaya Zarya” and is not included in the “Collected Works”. As a result, it has been found that the components of the empire’s image for G. D. Grebenshchikov consist of the classical “orthodoxy – autocracy – nationality” imperial triad, which is realised both in the original and the self-translation of the work.

The aim of the paper is to confirm the idea that the interpretation of bestiary images in the Russian and Ossetian literature of the late 19th and the early 20th century from the perspective of their symbolic semantic component occurs in the context of relevant ideas of the specified cultural and historical period. The scientific novelty of the research lies in conducting a joint study of zoographic images in the poems of F. Sologub, K. D. Balmont, V. I. Narbut, D. B. Khetagurov, G. G. Maliev, I. Arnigon and determining commonality in the manifestation of aesthetic attitudes of modernism. It is the first time in the history of Ossetian scientific thought that bestiary themes are covered in the context of inter-literary connections and influences and become the subject of a comprehensive literary analysis. The texts presented reveal the significance of animalistics in the ideosphere of Russian and Ossetian poets in terms of traditional and individual interpretations (typical properties of folklore images, author’s anthropomorphic metaphorics) and the adaptation of animal archetypes in a modernist context (neo-mythologism, exoticism, savagery, doppelgangers). As a result, the research concludes that the animalistic code cannot be interpreted outside national, folklore traditions, cultural context and the author’s personality, when the connotation of bestiary is revealed in multifaceted semantic layers, going far beyond purely faunistic themes.

The paper aims to identify the chronology and specifics of translations and studies of the creative work of the Polish science fiction writer, futurist and philosopher Stanisław Lem (1921-2006) in Germany in the aspect of imagology. Until now, the problems associated with the translation of his works into German have rarely attracted the attention of Russian scholars. The study is original in that it is the first in Russian philological science to trace the history of translations of Stanisław Lem’s works into German and their reception in German-speaking countries. Stanisław Lem’s place in the German book market is viewed from two perspectives – firstly, in the context of Polish literature popularisation, and secondly, within the framework of the science fiction genre. In addition, the paper provides a list of German-language editions of his books with a brief information about translators. The research findings show that the cross-cultural ties between Poland and German-speaking countries influenced publishers’ interest in Lem’s works, mainly at the stage when his books were being first published in German, after which the writer’s reputation as an original science fiction writer and strong ties with individual publishers, namely “Volk und Welt” in East Germany and “Suhrkamp Verlag” in West Germany, played a major role. It is the first time that the factors clarifying the process of translation and publication of Lem’s works in German have been revealed.

The aim of the research is to characterise the historiography of Kabardian dialects and subdialects in chronological order using personification and presenting classifications in a comparative aspect. The scientific novelty of the work is determined by the necessity to analyse and revise the existing classifications of dialects and subdialects in order to account for structural changes in the phonetics, morphology and lexicon of the Kabardian language. The paper analyses the classifications of Kabardian dialects and subdialects, traces the main differences in interpretation taking into account territorial peculiarities and identifies the differential features of each subdialect and dialect considering central and marginal characteristics. The obtained results demonstrate that Kabardian dialects and subdialects are differentiated by language features, including phonetic, morphological and lexical aspects, as well as areal characteristics.

The aim of the study is to identify the main ways of representing zero-quantity semantics in the modern Kabardian language. The study is novel in that it is the first to examine and systematise in a comprehensive manner lexical, affixal, phraseological units with the semantics of zero quantity in the Kabardian language and analyse the ways of conveying the semantics of non-possession and the semantics of absence in the Kabardian language. The paper analyses the main lexical means of conveying zero-quantity semantics in the modern Kabardian language, identifies typical constructions representing zero-quantity semantics, the features of functioning and lexical composition of phraseological and paremiological units with zero-quantity semantics, examines the main word-formation means of lexemes with non-possession semantics and absence semantics. The obtained results showed that the semantics of zero quantity is implemented in the modern Kabardian language through lexical, phraseological, paremiological, word-formation means. In addition, constructions representing zero-quantity semantics, which contain a verb in a negative form, have been identified in this language.

The study aims to identify the verbal and cogitative technology of making proposition (the mandatory compositional part of deliberative rhetoric) in Russian and Anglo-American rhetoric. The paper presents a holistic comparative description of the Patriarch’s speech from A. S. Pushkin’s drama “Boris Godunov” and the “Sinews of Peace” speech by W. Churchill. The concept of the ideal language type taken from linguistic typology served as the basis for the extragenetic comparison of the Russian literary text and the Anglo-American text of mass communication neo-rhetoric. The ideal language type as a set of universal definitions of rhetoric units is formed in classical Greco-Roman rhetoric and is used by the educational systems of both national cultures. The compared texts are constructed according to the same rules and have a single rhetorical orientation. The scientific novelty of the study lies in identifying the sense-making role of metaphor both in the composition of proposition and in the composition of deliberative rhetoric as a whole; in establishing correspondence between the propositions of the Russian and the English-language texts. As a result, the semantic and stylistic features of deliberative oratory in Russian and Anglo-American rhetoric were revealed.

Mirsky, in particular, catalogues the techniques of stylistic summarisations and their author’s individual terminological expression using the material of “A History of Russian Literature: From Its Beginnings to 1925” in the context of methodological searches of criticism of the Russian émigré community. The author emphasises the genre originality of the scientific work, which reflected the following oppositions: general/separate, original/translated, personal/nonpersonal, aesthetic/sociological. The scientific novelty of the concept lies in identifying the functions of Mirsky’s narrative techniques and critical optics, combining micro- and macropoetic worlds, a view of Russian literature from the outside and from within the national tradition. The aim of the study is to identify German ethnographic realia in novels and the peculiarities of representation of these realia in the linguistic consciousness of Germans and Russia Germans. The paper attempts to determine the psycholinguistic significance of German realia on the basis of associative experiment data and to establish their nuclear-peripheral organisation for these ethnic groups. The study is original in that it is the first to identify and systematise German ethnographic realia based on the material of novels about Volga Germans, as well as to describe mental representations of German everyday and ethnographic realia in the two ethnic groups and to compare these representations with the image of realia in the artistic reality of the novels. As a result of the study, it has been found that the authors most often use ethnographic realia, especially everyday realia, including food and drinks, clothes and shoes, housing and property, to describe the life of Russia Germans. The aim of the study is to identify the structural organization of English polycomponent attributive phrases when describing women’s clothing items in English-language consumer online advertising. The study is based on the material selected from British and American websites advertising the sale of women’s clothing. The scientific novelty lies in identifying the features of the structural organization of English polycomponent attributive phrases describing clothing in advertising texts on the websites of leading brands. The paper provides a general characteristic of polycomponent attributive phrases describing the features of items of women’s clothing in the creolized English-language texts of online advertising. The researchers then carry out a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the location of these features in the verbal components of advertising texts. The results of the study showed that the arrangement of words indicating the features of an object in these phrases is accompanied by a “violation” of the sequence proposed by the rules of English grammar. Such “violations” are created to bring to the fore the words that most clearly characterize certain features of the advertised clothing.

The aim of the study is to identify the phatic language means used in the headlines of media texts posted on the Internet in Russian, English and Chuvash. The paper characterises in a comparative aspect the features peculiar to the repertoire of the phatic means that are in demand among modern journalists, representatives of different national-linguistic communities. The paper is novel in that it is the first to analyse phatic means using the material of Russian, English and Chuvash media speech in order to determine language specificity of the linguistic phenomenon under consideration. As a result, it has been found that colons, contextually conveying expression, as well as stylistically modified precedent phenomena are used in the phatic function in the headlines of media texts in Russian. Informal syntax constructions are employed in this capacity in the English-language and the Chuvash-language headlines, the latter also use intentionally distorted precedent vocabulary and the technique of citation. The fact that in order to establish contact with readers, the headlines are formulated according to the principle of language game represents the basis of interlanguage similarity.
